Trees part 2

Following on from a few weeks ago 2 of the suggestions people gave me have been tried. The first was to use some DAS clay to cover the copper wire of the tree but so far I have not managed to perfect this given I am trying to make some Silver Birch trees at the moment.

The second was simply to spray the trunks a few times with a white coat. This seems to be work but I do need to get something that is a bit more of a mucky white.

Once that was done and the paint dry, the trunks were sprayed with sticky glue and then covered with lengths of chopped up sisal string as the base to which foliage can be attached.

Finally once that had set, another coat of spray glue and then a generous coat of foliage.

And so the first 2 trees are in place, of about the 40/50 silver birch needed

I also have to do around 100 other trees for which I need to paint the trunks and sisal string brown so a trip to B&Q or Hobbycraft to find a decent colour will be done at some point in the future, along with also trying Atsos suggestion to use super glue and talc.

For the trunks, spray a grey green first, then dry brush white, looks more natural. Alternatively spray white, then wash with thinned German Field Grey or similar. The only downside to shading the trunks is it makes the wire twists more visible. I still think Sea Moss will be better for the trees nearer the front. The sisal is great for a canopy type effect but you get more visible daylight in the branches of sea moss. The only bark that is actually brown is on conifers.

Like the ones made so far, they are getting there, just offering other options. Tree making is an art in itself, I am by no means an expert so feel free to ignore me!

Thanks for that as that helps with the colours. I think I probably do agree about your comment on canopy trees for the Sisal tree.

For covering the wire armiture I am experimenting with Reeves modeling paste. Looks effective but time consuming painting it on. Have tried DAS - was not impressed, even more time consuming. The modeling paste can be brushed on in layers, buidling up the bulk of the trunk and branches.

Thanks for that. Will see what the godess of google can turn up on that and have a nice big tub of talc to try tomorrow night.
