  1. I have still been modelling I’m just terrible at keeping threads up to date so here is my ‘progress’ in something resembling time order

first of all both 56s are now numbered named and most importantly dcc sound fitted

56071 and 56093 The Institution of Mining Engineers

    E4ECB313-5CFF-4481-9681-D385D2743AAD.jpeg.1d357df52ec1f8d8e3b1b52f2b22b286.jpeg

    next came something quite drastic

    6F4D1EB3-75CE-40C5-B20E-217B65AFD447.jpeg.88852b3030da3899ae7e46a708343ef0.jpeg

back to bare baseboards adjusted all the legs to the same length , a full track relay and a proper dcc bus installed currently the outer circuit has been relayed and the inner track is half done and the point to the siding installed including a point motor

  2. Today I’ve reuploaded most of the pictures to the thread and removed some of the other missing ones I couldn’t replace they may not all be the same as the originals but it at least means anyone new to the thread I will get what’s going on

I will also have an update proper very shortly all my parcels arrived and the 56s are moving forward

Good to see some more progress with the wires going up.

Although it's not mentioned in that BBC piece - and I wouldn't expect that level of detail really - I imagine it'll be the 'box at Baguley Fold Junction that'll be going as it's the only one left along that stretch of line.

Didn’t see any new wires up when I went through Man vic this week plenty more support structures though but still a few missing, York to church Fenton looks like all the ‘return?’ Wires are in place maybe just about ready for hanging the rest of the knitting up

    Hey David,

Depot layouts can be good and Knottingley is not just a loco depot. I have thought about adding the depot and wagon works on the opposite side to the station. I feel like I could design it separately to the main layout as, for now, I want to keep things simple. I am still debating between a crossing and a ladder junction. The crossing junction is winning at the moment…

Anyway, I am struggling at the moment.

I know I will probably need to buy a new garage door (so it does not fall down and lock me inside!) and I will have to tile the floor as well as board up the walls. What room do you use for your layout (if you have one)? I have noticed a lot of people use a spare room, an attic or an attached garage or garden shed.

I will be using my garage, but its not attached to my block of flats. This would be the only reasonable space I could really use as I live in a one-bedroom flat. I can see my garage from my flat, but its still across the publicly accessible car park. That means I will have to use a generator. I can get a non-fuel rechargeable generator. However, my main worry issue is security. I am worried about someone coming along and smashing everything up whilst I am operating. A little privacy would be nice. Not to be anti-social, but nerves of not knowing any of my fellow flat block residents may or may not think (if I knew it would be fine, but sometimes I worry more because of the uncertainty of not knowing).

While I will board up my roof and walls (dust limitation) and tile the floor (same reason) this is not a problem because its a case of doing so (a bit like the baseboards etc).

I asked my Dad about it and he said the situation might be a bit impractical. It was disappointing to hear that, but I can see what he is saying. However, this is something I would still like to do. What do you think? I would rather the truth than what I want to hear. Sometimes I dive into things without fully thinking through. I think it will also be good for me. These last couple of years I have barely left my flat other than to go to the shops.

Debates about DC/DCC I will look at when I have sorted this out.

    Regards,

    Jonny.

    hi Jonny

My last layout was in a spare bedroom, my current one is in a loft. Building in a separate garage certainly will bring its own set of challenges. Once the structural work is done new door etc personally I’d probably want to invest in an alarm and a half decent cctv camera as a just in case. obviously I have no idea what your neighbourhood is like I would probably bring rolling stock back to the flat when not operating and the controller(s) if it was practical should the worse happened these are your most expensive things to replace.

    Very nice!

Still waiting for mine from Rails of Sheffield who when I spoke to them said their delivery has not arrived.

Whilst people are looking at this thread, I wondered if anyone has noticed any progress with the York, Church Fenton electrification.  I was hoping to get over that way at Christmas but Covid put paid to ourctravel plans. I see that NR are posting their work schedule every month.

    Jamie

From what I have seen the knitting is still not up beyond the portals already up they appear to be upgrading a lot of the line side troughing but beyond that I can’t tell

I am not sure if this has already been reported here, so apologies if it has, but Rail Gazette (and others) have published some analysis of the IRP, as related in answers to questions by an "anonymous" source at the DfT. They released a simplified critical path chart and that relevant to Trans-Pennine and NPR is as follows. The dates refer to likely completion targets, and not duration of work:

Electrification (now denoted as NPR Phase 1!!)

Manchester to Stalybridge - 2024 to 2026 completion - quite why this will take so long when it has already started is not explained.

Huddersfield to Leeds - 2028 to 2030 completion - no mention whatsoever of Stalybridge to Huddersfield

Leeds to York - 2030 to 2033 - no explanation of why so long, when this too has already started. No indication of what "additional" four tracking will be needed, and where - that may wait for NPR.

    Leeds to Bradford - 2028 to 2031

    NPR (now called Phase 2!)

Leeds to York - 2036 to 2041completion - no idea what this contains and nothing is offered.

Liverpool to Manchester - 2038 to 2043 - has to wait for the delayed HS2 2B West re-think to be sorted, and then built.

Manchester to Leeds - 2040 to 2044 - decision over whether to re-bore existing, redundant single track bores to Standedge, or build new tunnels has yet to be taken, but a new tunnel is definitely planned around Manchester, off the HS2 route from Manchester Airport to Piccadilly, which will be shared with NPR up to that point.

Next to nothing, in fact, nothing about how to integrate HS2 East and NPR around Leeds.

So, apart from the first phase of electrification, not a lot of answers, except that the DfT defence was that this will give them time to look at new options and also to obtain T&W consents. Make of that what you will. The timescales do not look entirely unreasonable, with some glaring exceptions, IF you had an outline plan right now. But, as they don't, and have removed all responsibility for overseeing delivery from TfN (news that was quietly hidden in the earlier press release), and given the track record of projects that have been directly overseen by the DfT, I think we have a long, long time to wait.

Wow considering an official NR presentation I watched last year was saying the entire York to Manchester TRU was meant to be completed by 2027 some of these dates are very mystifying ( I’ll see if I can find it)

  9. Plenty of these paint markings on the route as well as lots of embankment lineside vegetation clearance, between Huddersfield and Deighton there was some more pilot holes being drilled looking forward to some more heavy duty progress I believe there a big blockade due January time between York and Huddersfield as a lot of route learning if currently underway so we can bypass Leeds entirely (don’t know the actual plan for services so please don’t ask) and route learning refreshing on the Calder valley for most depots is picking up pace.
