  1. As paul says some classes of driving license have to have health checks, my idea might not sound great but look at the many cases of elderly drivers mentioned in this thread and as the population of the UK is living longer it is only going to worsen. Something needs to change and thats why i questioned the rules in other countries, there might just be a good template that we could adopt
  2. Using rmweb as a snapshot of the UK there are lots of us with situations involving elderly relatives and driving, some of us are lucky that license surrendered or vehicle sold, signed over but some have flat refusal to listen ,believe that their driving standards have become dangerous to themselves and others. Do we need a change in the law that once we reach a certain age mandatory health checks and some sort of retest carried out. what is the situation in the US, AUS or elsewhere?
  3. Dad still holds a driving license BUT cannot phyically get into the car now as he cannot weight bear, unfortunatly also a diagnosis of dementia and he got upset recently when we sorted car insurance out for mam and had to tell him he wasnt on the policy...not a good day
  4. Very similar to what we went through with my farther, number of strokes and TIA,s but insisted he was still ok to drive. Luckily dr had a chat with him one day and he stopped driving
  5. Apologies if this has been covered before, a few schools in town have 20 when lights flash limits around them BUT i have seen these lights on at night time, weekends and even school holidays so which limit do you abide by as the 20 is designed for specific times of the day monday to friday?
  6. Didnt know that but when built they had the derated deltic engine which can trace its linage back to ww2 junkers aero engines, as with lots of engines they are designed for one application and then adapted, with differing results!
  7. And of course the deltic engine was originally designed for marine applications and is still in use in a derated form in the Hunt class
  8. Probably just before depot closed as units stored overnight for next days service, a practise that still continues. Wife used to live in a flat that had a great view of the sidings and as trains finished their last run of the day they first went to fuelling road and when complete were moved to another road and shut down for the night, Bloody noisy in the early hours as they were fired up for there first run of the day....alarm not needed!
  9. Thanks for the clarification Arthur, been a long day and hadnt thought of it that way round !
  10. Fuelling point relocated to carriage sidings and no allocation as port traffic decreased and rail born traffic to Vickers also decreased so train loco carried out any necessary shunting
  11. remeber reading somewhere that the fitters in Barrow had, for some reason, more success at keeping them in service. dont remember where i read this but a possible explanation as to why they all ended up here. vickers armstrongs claim to fame with BR was as the license holder for sulzer diesel engines built on "The golden mile"
  12. actually vickers armstrong Barrow had no conection with metropolitan vickers by the 1950s as they had sold off the buisness ,plenty of sources on internet to confirm this
