  1. I wonder what some UK train operators might do, to reach this level of rolling stock availability?! - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-europe-63442530

AIUI these were brand new trains being delivered (25 4 car sets) and RhB decided to deliver them all at once (and carry passengers to claim the record) - rather than being 25 sets that were already in traffic.

The Lancaster will be visiting South Oxfordshire several more times in the coming weeks - we've got it booked to do flypasts over Wallingford on August Bank Holiday and then for both days of the first weekend in September (BunkFest Music Festival).

  6. On Pointless, nobody ever says, "I'd like to see questions about railways come up".

And when asked what they would do with the prize money, no-one ever says, "Well Xander, I'd buy a huge shed and build the model railway of my dreams".

    That's what I would say!

Depends on your definition of 'Pre Grouping'.

If you mean railways that existed up until 31/12/1922, I can name about 20

However if the net is pushed wider to allow railways which amalgamated prior 1o 1922/3 (e.g. the various railways which combined to form the LNWR, or those the GWR had already taken over), I could probably get a significantly higher figure.

  7. Just build a 12" to the foot garden shed kit. It was rubbish! Met-Pak didn't work, Solder was useless and burnt it. In the end we had to use screws and nails!

  8. Is thinking it would be wise for all not to poke the lion (Andy Y) with a stick at this time. One is likely to get ones head chewed off. Nice work Andy, now go and lie down....

  9. Point Motors for Garden Layouts.

Any suggestions for suitable point motors for garden layouts please? I generally use PECO point motors for exhibition layouts, but don't think they would be suitable for outdoor use mounted underneath baseboards. I am concerned about water getting in, causing short circuits and corrosion. I don't have any problem with surface mounted motors as this is not going to be my usual fine scale modelling (it's really an excuse to give my locos a good run!). I'm using analogue not DCC.

    Many thanks,

    Gary

TBH I've found the PL11s quite delicate, even for indoor use - every now and then the cover comes off and parts fly out! Apart from a couple of restricted locations, I've usually switched to using the Gaugemaster/SEEP equivalent.

Personally if I was designing a garden railway, I'd try my best to avoid having any points outside, leaving them for undercover areas of the layout.

Although Reading seems to have missed most of the thunder that was around earlier (could hear it but not close enough for lightning), it's 8-10C cooler at the University observing site than it was yesterday evening. That said, the thermometer in my living room is still saying 30C!

Maybe have a word with the guys who run 'Scale Model Scenery' - I think they have an arrangement whereby the Royal Mail picks up from them directly.

  21. There's a special place in hell for people whose eyes are glued to their devices while walking along. And for people who cycle/drive while on their device. And for cyclists who cycle on the pavement.

But the most special place in hell, right between Satan's butt cheeks, is reserved for the total a-hat who was on his device, while cycling in the dark, without lights (except the one emanating from his screen) in a pedestrian area. Of course, neither of his hands were anywhere near the handlebar, or brakes. :mad_mini:

Yup - hardly feel safe these days. Nearly hit from behind by three cyclists on the pavement in the dark last night (in the space of 40m), and nearly hit head on by four others coming at me with no lights on tonight. Don't tend to walk through Reading station subway these days either as I don't feel safe there too.

  22. It’s not everyday a Tornado jet roars over you at only 200 metres...

    1. RJS1977

Some years ago. two of my Met Office colleagues were doing a 'horizon survey' on top of a weather radar tower near Carmarthen. Whilst they were doing it, they kept getting buzzed by Tornados on 150' low flying exercises - the tower was 120' tall!

Afterwards, my colleagues went to the pub, and happened to meet one of the RAF pilots.

"Oh, so you're the guys who were buzzing us on top of the weather radar tower," one of my colleagues said.

"Is that what it is?" asked the pilot. "We've been using it as a target for the last 6 months!"
