  1. I've just dug out my LRM Coal Engine kit to look at the chassis etch. The wide spacers are marked EM/P4 .It was the second loco kit LRM's proprietor designed in the mid 80's IIRC so I expect he felt that was okay at the time.

I checked, as best I could, the axle and coupling rod hole spacing's. The front rods are .25mm short and the rears .2mm short on my example. As they were from hand drawn artwork at 2:1 it is perhaps not surprising there is a discrepancy, although it is disappointing. With CAD, it is possible to design to much tighter tolerances. I use .01mm as the registration of the two sides of the tool is probably less than that,

As I also build locos with horn guides/bearings, any mis-match is taken care of during assembly.

  2. What you say about cost is true although you've overlooked the "price" of building a TOU, adding a microswitch for crossing switching, etc. Speed/ease of installation is a factor that cannot always be costed.

I've opted to use Cobalts for turnouts on the new layout section that I am building, but will be using servos and MERG Servo4s for post, bracket and ground signals.

  3. LRM jigs are now made by Markits (who copied the original ones to sell for themselves). As the original supplier required an order for a batch of at least 2000 to get a reasonable price, and some retail sales were already now going to Markits, LRM decided to buy in from Markits.

They are also made from 1/8" aluminium bar stock, but do seem to be slightly larger than the original LRM version. Perhaps the machining of the tapered end also increases the diameter of the adjacent parallel plain section of the jig.

Having reduced them to fit your hornblock bearings, I would wipe them over with a coat of light oil to prevent any oxidation/corrosion while they are in the tool box.

Incidentally, LRM don't claim the idea for the design, that was Iain Rice's. LRM just started to get them made.
