Update 1.
Well. I'm back after an extended break from modelling. I lost interest mainly due to lack of funds to proceed further and decided to give up for the time being. moving on a couple of years, and now employed i feel that i am able to carry on modelling, and not have to worry about costs or cutting corners.
I have learn't many things from reading threads/topics, and giving things a go on my old layout, which was 00 scale. This time i have decided to venture into the smaller N scale.
So armed with 2x1 wood sections, a 6mm baseboard cut into 4 (ish) and a bag of tacks, I've decided to make a start with what i have. previously i had built the baseboards out of 12mm ply and various sizes of wood, which made the layout excessively heavy. This time i have focused on being able to easily manoeuvre each section of the layout, when needed. All sections will be no longer than 4ft and no wider than 18" wide. this allows the layout to be moved around, split up and moved in and out of the loft if needed. This also allows me to work on sections elsewhere in the house through colder/warmer weather.
I will eventually use boarding around the sides of each board creating more room underneath the layout (this was an area i did most wrong last time) as well as having back scenes.
Hopefully, i have everything planned correctly, along with a deeper pocket to fully be able to complete this layout to how i imagine without having to worry about struggling to get hold of materials and such.
Right. enough jabbering on. onto my plans..
I plan to initially have an 8ft x 18" "main" layout which will be able to be extended either way if needed.
Section 1
I will have a TMD taking up all of the first board, and some of the second, with a raised section running along the back which joins onto a station. there will be a refuelling area, a main depot shed (potentially 2), stabling sidings and a tunnel dissapearing under the raised section.
Section 2
This half will have the tracks from the back of the shed joining back down to the refuelling section, with the majority of the board being on a higher level, accommodating a large station, which dissapears/ends under the building. the building will hopefully vaguely resemble Banbury Station, with the British Rail era design.
The raised section of the layout will have overhead lines throughout, with working signals.
All points will be motorised (maybe digital) with DCC control throughout the layout.
I like the idea of having a control panel to operate a yard, so im edging towards having a control panel that will be detachable.
The track plan i have decided up on (could slightly change) is Below with a key:
I received a 6x4 N scale layout with 11 sets of points, + around 20ft of track salvaged which is being cleaned up to be used. What i have saved is in good condition, (some photoed just for the idea) just receiving a good clean to get up to top condition.
I have laid out the majority of the track loosely to get an idea of how things will look, but nothing will be fixed down at this stage. The majority of the point work will be moved, so that the sidings on the left of the layout can accommodate 3 engines, then the rest of the layout adjusted accordingly.
im still undecided on era, however it will be somewhere between post 70's and today.
Once Christmas is out of the way, i will build the second, more complex board, where the station will be.
I think I've covered everything! Merry Christmas Everyone!
