  1. I found a press cutting last week for the retirement of George Ainsworth. Signalman at Shillingstone who recalls 2 visits by the Royal Train for GeorgeVI to visit Blandford camp. I’ll scan the cutting in due course and attach if interested. No mention of the train composition though
  2. I have this list in my record but apart from the references 7 and 10 in 1965 I'm unable to validate any of the others. They came from SDJR.net but the site has long since dissapeared and I.m not sure who owned it, Tim Chapman and Geoff Bean were credited in supporting the work of the authors.
  3. Hi Folks, Doing a bit of research for the Museum at Shillingstone on the original goods shed before they were replaced with the concrete provender sheds in the 1930's. Does anyone have any Photo's I could use or drawings of the original sheds ? I use sheds loosely as I heard that the original may have been wooden but assume from the work done at the station in the 1870's through to sometime in the 1930's a standard brick built shed was in place similar to that at Sturminster, Blandford and Stalbridge. If anyone knows why this was replaced that would be great 🙂 Thanks Gavin...
  4. Really nice to see your layout again. The signal box looks great with the steps. Thanks
  5. I cant tell from the Photo if its Stur or not, I would have expected there to be a shadow from the the grain store which as shown in Railwests photo. I do however think its more likely than Shillingstone as I believe the doors at shillingstone would have opened onto the yard side and the land falls away to the Stour once the railway is crossed so I would have expected the land to fall away not rise. There does appear to be a building behind and above the shed and trees which again fits the topology of Stur. Its a great photo though and many thanks for posting it as it shows a very rare view as stated above of the rail side of a "Dorset" shed.
  6. The train automation programs from what I can tell and certainly how iTrain works are based on profiling the locomotives. Once the automation program knows how far the train moves at each speed setting it can very accurately predict the train stop position. If you plan on running unprofiled locomotives then a 3 sensor block with a stop block at each end of the overall block reduces the requirement for profiling. The stop blocks cound be current or spot detection depending on requirement.
  7. Great size for n gauge. Will follow your build with interest
  8. Many thanks for your great photo’s in the Templecombe post,  sort of modelling it myself and they are from angles I haven’t seen before so very useful.  Gavin...

Thanks, I'm glad they are useful.

  9. I couldn’t make the May meeting but will keep my eye open for this one. All the boards are still in the garage from the first event and only been out once since then
  10. Picked a couple of dates mid April. Can’t do beginning of April as show and then away and not available in May after the Bank Holiday
  11. I still have the layout from last time and only used it once since last time. Can’t commit at the moment as I already have a show with Sturminster Halt in April but once you have a date I can review. Thanks for the prod Crompton. Not been here for a while ..
  12. Changed tack, Now onto a room based layout called Dorset Shire. Based on Broadstone, Shillingstone and Templecombe

  14. One day for me please, cream crackerd after the last event.
  15. Any chance we could get a date before Easter whilst the modeling season is in full swing rather than waiting until June ? Dates permitting count me in anyway :-)
  16. Back on the Shillingstone build - Nothing like a deadline to focus the mind

  20. Hard enough finding space on the train to sit down so I think modelling is out. Good time to catch up with the forums though and discuss our many and various railway projects as well as check out Crawley Yard :-)
  21. Shillingstone The grand plan, I'm going to stick with 2ft connector modules, if someone joins with an 18" board that would be 3' off on each side which I think would be acceptable. I may tweak this anyway as I want the Mimic panel on the layout so using one of the extension boards may be the best place for this and having the connection at 9' from the station side of the board Here are the boards set up in the garden. I'd already planned to use the end boards as Cassette fiddleyards so some adaption needed only to make them scenic modules. Dont have a picture of them in the car but I have done that once so think i should be ok, Just need to think a bit about the transport for the end sections.
  22. Hi everyone, For some reason I hadn't seen the area group appear so its taken me a while to do this. I'm originally from Dorset and was able to do a fair bit of walking on the SDJR track bed between Poole and Blandford in the seventies so thats where one of my main interests lie. IHave a layout in N Gauge of Sturminster Newton and did have one of Broadstone but had to trash that. I'm a member of West Sussex N Gauge Society and have a module based on Crawley Yard on the London to Brighton line. Current projects include Shillingstone in OO and a modular layout with Claude Dreyfuss (Nick) which were able to discuss on the days I do thecommute to London Bridge. Currently residing in Billingshurst so not far to Crawley area at all.
  23. Sturminster Newton here, now in the garage as it needs a fair bit of rework . It's in n gauge with a scenic area of around 7 feet by 18 inches. Had to make a number of compromises to fit in the size I had available . Getting pictures of the cattleyard proved really difficult so I'm starting that section again.
  24. I'm a user of railmaster and also looking forward to the train detection system. My assumption based on what I've read so far is that the detector will A) identify the train ? B) identify where the marked item is on the track. My expectation is that I will fit the detectors where at least for stopping there is enough room for the normal deacceleration curve to come into play, so yes longer for steam than diesel/electrics. Suspect this will take some tuning both of the correct location for the sensor and potentially some tweaking of the curves. Alternative is for a second detector and force a hard stop but don't like this although could be useful pulling into a station at a slower speed say. Going to be interesting to see how this works. The basic programming as it exists now in Rm is ok and easy to do so this should just make it better (he says hopefully) Anyone think that the "train detection" will actually show the train on the mimic plan on screen?
  25. You will have to get yourself a bigger shed so you can hang onto it yourself. Real shame to sell or dismantle :-(
