I have this list in my record but apart from the references 7 and 10 in 1965 I'm unable to validate any of the others.  They came from SDJR.net but the site has long since dissapeared and I.m not sure who owned it,  Tim Chapman and Geoff Bean were credited in supporting the work of the authors.

  2. Hi Folks,  Doing a bit of research for the Museum at Shillingstone on the original goods shed before they were replaced with the concrete provender sheds in the 1930's.  Does anyone have any Photo's I could use or drawings of the original sheds ?   I use sheds loosely as I heard that the original may have been wooden  but assume from the  work done at the station in the 1870's through to sometime in the 1930's a standard brick built shed was in place similar to that at Sturminster, Blandford and Stalbridge.  If anyone knows why this was replaced that would be great 🙂  Thanks Gavin...

  3. I cant tell from the Photo if its Stur or not,  I would have expected there to be a shadow from the the grain store which as shown in Railwests photo. I do however think its more likely than Shillingstone as I believe the doors at shillingstone would have opened onto the yard side and the land falls away to the Stour once the railway is crossed so I would have expected the land to fall away not rise.  There does appear to be a building behind and above the shed and trees which again fits the topology of Stur.   Its a great photo though and many thanks for posting it as it shows a very rare view as stated above of the rail side of a "Dorset" shed.

  4. The train automation programs from what  I can tell and certainly how iTrain works are based on profiling the locomotives.  Once the automation program knows how far the train moves at each speed setting it can very accurately predict the train stop position.   If you plan on running unprofiled locomotives then a 3  sensor block with a  stop block at each end of the overall block reduces the requirement for profiling. The stop blocks cound be current or spot detection depending on requirement.

  5. Shillingstone

The grand plan, I'm going to stick with 2ft connector modules, if someone joins with an 18" board that would be 3' off on each side which I think would be acceptable. I may tweak this anyway as I want the Mimic panel on the layout so using one of the extension boards may be the best place for this and having the connection at 9' from the station side of the board

Here are the boards set up in the garden. I'd already planned to use the end boards as Cassette fiddleyards so some adaption needed only to make them scenic modules.

Dont have a picture of them in the car but I have done that once so think i should be ok, Just need to think a bit about the transport for the end sections.

  6. Hi everyone, For some reason I hadn't seen the area group appear so its taken me a while to do this. I'm originally from Dorset and was able to do a fair bit of walking on the SDJR track bed between Poole and Blandford in the seventies so thats where one of my main interests lie. IHave a layout in N Gauge of Sturminster Newton and did have one of Broadstone but had to trash that. I'm a member of West Sussex N Gauge Society and have a module based on Crawley Yard on the London to Brighton line.

Current projects include Shillingstone in OO and a modular layout with Claude Dreyfuss (Nick) which were able to discuss on the days I do thecommute to London Bridge. Currently residing in Billingshurst so not far to Crawley area at all.

  7. I'm a user of railmaster and also looking forward to the train detection system. My assumption based on what I've read so far is that the detector will

    A) identify the train ?

    B) identify where the marked item is on the track.

My expectation is that I will fit the detectors where at least for stopping there is enough room for the normal deacceleration curve to come into play, so yes longer for steam than diesel/electrics. Suspect this will take some tuning both of the correct location for the sensor and potentially some tweaking of the curves. Alternative is for a second detector and force a hard stop but don't like this although could be useful pulling into a station at a slower speed say.

Going to be interesting to see how this works. The basic programming as it exists now in Rm is ok and easy to do so this should just make it better (he says hopefully)

Anyone think that the "train detection" will actually show the train on the mimic plan on screen?

  8. Thanks all for your help, Especially Tim, some great photos and the one looking back into the yard from the southerly end is great.

I can now redo the back of the layout. I'm very pleased with my track layout, think I have it just about right based on this :-) The Cattle yard end needs remodeling, I'm not happy with the road and getting the angle right is not easy and of course the hill drops away there quite fast so not ideal for modelling on the backscene

Ben not sure if it was yours but i did follow another Sturminster layout on here, being built in Australia i think and used the station models as a framework, still not sure I have the station building right but as I get better at modelling I may go back and redo.  This was the first time i realised the cattle dock wasnt oblong shaped so was able to use that and looking at Tim's photo that looks good too.

Been to the museum, they don't have many great pictures on display and the model is not as per the prototype but provides some useful indicators.  I think my last port of call will have to be the library service but will wait until i have some time to be in Dorset to do that.

    Thanks Again everyone :-)

PS attached a couple of pics of the model in the museum for anyone who hasnt seen it

Will recreate Tim's pictures when i do the refurb on it but in the meantime as close as I have to that northerly looking view into the yard. Don't look at the signal box roof :-)

  9. Looking for some help please. I want to do a refresh of my Sturminster Newton layout in N gauge and two of the areas that I wasn't happy with (of many) on the original were the cattle yard as viewed from the yard entrance and the back of the yard which for the model is the backscene. I've attached a couple of pics for reference. Any one able to point me at any photo's of these areas greatly appreciated. I think anything from the 40,s to the line closing will give me some ideas. I have seen some indications and models with a dairy but no pictures. Thanks Gavin..

Ps will also change from a generic backscene for the refresh what's behind Blandford &webb and down the backscene to where I have the coal merchants at the moment?
