the problem is in the rear springs being too long even Hornby recommend shortening the springs by cutting off some of the coils -

i have started using sharpie pens to detail loco cabs they do silver gold and bronze - so easy old airfix 4F -
these may be just what you need - bought for £1.99 each - geared down to 300 rpm max from e-bay go to "geared motors"

i use individual numbers the only way to get the number you need - i based my 4F on a photo i think the yellow stripe makes it less drab -
the only varnish i trust is purity seal spray from games workshop about £10.50 a large can gives a semi-matt finish like this

easy - just stick a small piece of foam between the axle and the bottom of the bogie - simple !
