    Class 07 Diesel

Hello @Ruston. I am just getting around to fitting sound to the Heljan 'ICI Langbaurgh' 07. I have a Zimo decoder (now it is the MS490F) from Digitrains with their sound file. Also a Lais stay alive has gone into the chassis under the rear body and the speaker will go on the floor of the cab. As this has to be hard wired the existing PC board will come out completely. I notice on the YooChoos desciption they mention adding resistors to protect the LEDs. Did you find that was necessary? I am basically following the install done by Paul Chetter in Hornby magazine May 2020, but he does not mention extra resistors. Dave Sorted - please see link:
  2. The Klear original was replaced with Pledge revive it floor gloss, that is a clear gloss. This is the stuff but it's been a while since I ordered some. This question has come up on RMWeb before, and I am not sure what the equivalent would be now as this does not seem to be available. Some more research needed. The weathering on the CotN had over 25 stages to achieve the finish, the idea being to be 'in service but well maintained and cleaned / polished'. The Klear cote was done once over the loco body and tender sides, and a second coat only applied over the lower half of the loco boiler. If / when I weather the Earl, I will record and photo the steps for input to a thread at some stage. This might be the same stuff as Klear (claimed), but it needs to be tested by brush coating and via airbrush.
  3. Thanks @AdamOrmorod. Fixed and tested OK. The slide bar needed freeing up and lubricating.
  4. Just received Earl Marischal DCC ready for a very good price from Bure Valley Models. Running well on DC. I decided against the DCC sound and steam. The steam generator seems an excellent idea for some fun, but I have a few concerns about the long term effects of condensate on scenery and applied weathering. To me, DCC control with good sound files /quality speaker is more important. I may just fit a decoder for DCC operation in the short term, and then hope that one of the sound supplier experts record the Prince of Wales to install on either an ESU or a Zimo decoder. The new P2 paint finish does seem rather 'flat', so some weathering will be needed. I did that to the CotN, which I have to say is still an excellent model, and currently is still my favourite. I did have to replace the motor though. Here for comparison. Some more shots of the weathering. The application of 'Klear' made all the difference.
  5. Thanks @RAF96 for the info. So if steam is not needed then presumably pressing F24 will take the power off the steam unit. Surely that is a better state to leave it in when not used. I would have preferred to have to turn it on rather than off.
  6. Good Morning Just picked up mine (with the sound and steam). Having read the instructions (most unusual), I am baffled by all of the HM700 TXS stuff. I only got the sound fitted as it is little more cost than the DC version and would be a provisional DCC. I was hoping, that at some stage I would fit a better sound decoder (preferably of the real loco when it is built), and an upgraded speaker, with control as per usual via my ESU ECoS. I don't have a smart phone or tablet that can do any of that remote stuff. So, is the TXS decoder already loaded with the sound file so I can use it 'out of the box' on the ECoS or do I have to load the files some other way. If not, it might be going back. I've been in touch with Hornby technical who said to just try it on the track with the ECoS. Seems as though the sound files are already loaded, so no downloading required. This will suffice until the real loco is recorded. I wonder who will be doing that?
  7. Thanks Ben Just shows how easily assumptions can be made about the length according to the wheel arrangement. The 2-8-0+0-8-2 is 7 1/2 inches shorter than 2-6-0+0-6-2. Of course the LNER U1 has smaller driving wheels. Fortunately, I had made a couple of extra storage cradles when constructing for the LMS Garretts. These are extended Peco SL-43s. Such a pity that Peco changed the design as these were much better for OO gauge. It would fit the DCC Concepts MPD-360, but that is quite an expensive option.
  8. Ben Just thinking about storage of this monster. Could you please advise the total length? Dave
  9. Or just use some black tack.
  10. Ah, but the cure is an injection of more 56s 🙂 Easy - no prescription needed, but alas not available on the NHS
  11. 'Cavalitis' will be new term for the medical dictionary
  12. What a crazy price, even discounted. Probably best to wait until the bigger discounts come up when they don't sell.
  13. Dash - I should have waitied and saved £40 on two 56s. BUT that is an extra month of enjoying the sound 🙂
  14. I seem to recall Trains4U would set up an ESU Lokpilot 5 decoder for the Cavalex Class 56. Looks as though currently out of stock but that could be a route if so desired.
