There was also to be a junction with the as-then planned Manchester South District Railway (MSDR) at Alderley Edge to and from the Macclesfield direction . This would have gone north via Styal, Northenden and Didsbury before joining the as built portion of the MSDR in the vicinity of Withington and West Didsbury station, providing an alternative route to Manchester. One of my earliest memories is from a friends further down the line at East Didsbury, their house backed onto the line and even had a gate from their back garden it still looked like a railway albeit without track. It didn’t flood like around West Didsbury. It would’ve been about 1980.

I was born and bred in West Didsbury having been born in Withington Hospital. Used to play down the ‘old railway’ as we called as a kid in the 80s. Withington & West Didsbury was already heavily overgrown by then.

One of the best Traction I have read in recent times. The quality has been really good recently and coincided with me recently cancelling my subscription to Rail Express which has sadly gone downhill.

I started this thread to ask what would've happened if Woodhead hadn't closed when it did as I am interested in real railways and their histories together with the imaginary world of model railways. I've had a look at your website and you make some interesting points. I like your monorails models. It seems to have gone massively off topic! As you said above can we get back to Woodhead please?!

True, though you could apply the same logic to the Class 156 and the 142 Realtrack are now doing plus doubt any Hornby version would be as high a specification.

Fair enough - I just think that councils going about trying to entrap Ian Allen booksellers is a bit extreme and would be better focusing their resources elsewhere. Ian Allan seem like an easy target. My point was the type of person intent on stabbing someone is hardly going to go to an Ian Allan bookshop to buy a craft kit to obtain a knife. It might make more sense to target the local B&Q or hardware store.

Really? What a terrible thing to do by the council. As if any youth intent on stabbing someone would go to the bother of going to Ian Allan to buy a model kit containing presumably a craft knife. It is more like the council wanting to force them out. Such a pity the Ian Allan bookshops in Birmingham and Manchester have closed - they were both excellent and well located shops.

I have seen various pictures of both bogie bolsters and BBA steel carrying wagons loaded with what looks like steel bars or rolled slabs westbound over the Woodhead route. Does anyone know what they were and where would have they been heading from / to together with how long this flow lasted for?

I vaguely remember the station building which was then in use as a DIY shop, I must've been about 4. It was demolished in 1981. Such a pity the line couldn't have been retained however good to see it reopened as Metrolink. I believe this would've happened much sooner had it not been for politics...
