About Me

Dutch, well actually no, I'm a Frisian, and proud of it! ( In Great Britain I would be a Welshman....).

I'm 52 years old, married, father of three children. By profession I'm an archaeologist, specializing in the Medieval period, but am interested in everything to do with history.

Railway modelling has been a hobby of mine since my childhood (and WW II armour modelling, but that's another story). As many Dutchmen, I started with Marklin, and concentrated on German railway layouts. My last attempt was stowed in boxes when we bought a house some ten years ago. A nice early 20th century house with 'Jugendstil' (Art Deco) elements, but in need of total refurbishment. On top of that we had children and I got on with my career. Railway modelling was put on hold...
Some years ago I opened the boxes, had a good look at all the German stuff, and finally saw the light! I decided to start all over again, and am now an ardent convert to Gods Wonderful Railway!

And why GWR? Well, the short version, because I love Wales!

I fell in love with Wales on our honeymoon there in 2001, and we have been visiting it frequently since then. I love it's history and it's landscape, especially Snowdonia and it's coast. And if you know how to look for it, there is history and archaeology everywhere in the landscape, as well as some fascinating railways. Some sections of the Cambrian coast are very hard to beat for sheer scenic spectacle.
As to modelling, 00 will allow me to combine my 1-76 scale armour hobby with my layout . And what better way to do this than depict a section of the Cambrian coastal Railway during it's GWR days in the period 1940-1945. History, Wales, Armour and Trains all combined into one package. And I can drink Single Malt while watching the trains go by....

Great plans, but no room yet... For the moment  I'm an armchair modeller and collector but this will change!

My sig, a medieval Frisian rallying cry:
Butter, brea en griene tsiis, wa't dat net sizze kin is gjin oprjochte Fries
And in a direct translation:
Butter, bread and green cheese, who that not say can is no upright Frisian

Frisian is closely related to Anglo-Saxon
