  3. 'xpress publishing' did a book on Marylebone to Rugby in the 'District Controllers View' series. (isbn 1-901056-17-1 ) I asked at the time for the Rugby to Sheffield section but nothing transpired further. This has photos , track diagrams, motive power allocations, operational anecdotes, timetabling. 72 pages softcover -retailed at £10.95 but I could not see a date of publication. There is an extensive bibliography on the GCRS website on all matters GCR

I read a number of the US Model Railroader and Model Craftsman magazines of the 1940's-50's which carried articles by M D Thornburgh and others showing O scale builds of B&O and other railroad equipment where tinplate coffee cans were the main source material. Other cans with corrugated metal sides were favoured for boxcar doors and ends.
  5. The small print on this latest offer shows it is only inviting people on the e-bay managed payments scheme to the offer. My last £1 selling offer came about 2 months ago-this was followed by an 80% off fees which I had no items sorted out for, so I was hoping for a £1 offer for this weekend-as others have said above, I was also sadly disappointed to read that the offer was £3. Maybe time to put a couple of larger lots on as I have about 50 Bachman carriages and 80 coal wagons to shift -judging the market's capacity for larger lots might be a 'chuck it and chance it' strategy?

  7. southern migrated to Stechford, close to the railway station. Still carried 2nd hand and in latter days only opened weekends, with a door lock opened from inside. Closed down now.
  8. Just picked up new copies of vol 1 & 2 of this pre GCR line history for £22.22 post paid from 'books -etc' on e-bay - almost less than the cost of 1 volume of same - limited stock left. Dave

I agree completely with what Robert C says here and it is not just restricted to UK publishers - I understand that Owen Russell and David Jackson's work on the 'GC in LNER days' was a similar work where publisher errors arose; My earlier interests in the USA B&O Railroad saw the Sagle & Stauffer work ' B&O Power' littered with issues that Sagle requested changes for, but which were never instituted, even though he had written of these subjects earlier in both the official 'B&O Magazine' and then 'A Picture History of B&O Motive Power' , with access to official B&O records. There was a considerable 'witchhunt', some years after publication, over these alleged Sagle's 'inaccuracies', which also included wrong placement of punctuation! I know there was some criticism recorded in early issues of the GC journal 'Forward ' over works published by J C M Healy, but I too have seen nothing to contradict Robotham 's work directly. I should also at this point congratulate Robert on his efforts to publish accurate formation information on Passenger Train consists, which in my eyes take him beyond the status of an accurate modeller to that of a Railway Historian. I am sure that I am not alone in being grateful for his efforts on behalf of GCs section service modellers. Dave
  10. Mark, I have a large A4 binder with lots of resource material on logging, including the BARNHART article and others from the Gazette referred to above. I can dig these out and send them on to you if you want them. I was interested in West Va logging and gathered these items up over a number years. Currently abandoned in favour of the GC line in Derbyshire. Let me know if interested. best regards Dave.

  13. I'm a bit surprised no-one has mentioned the old 'Bob's Models' on the Coventry Road, Small Heath, Birmingham. I worked in Small Heath in the 70's and was introduced into the railway section by Jim B, a fellow I worked with, who had a great collection of ER pacifics and American HO brass (SP & ATSF mainly) After a early purchase of a Hornby Black 5 and an Airfix signal box which I tried to modify into Heath Junction signal box, Jim finally turned me to the dark side and I embarked on a 35 year journey frought with fun and not a little financial sacrifice. After a couple of Rivarrossi HO B&O locos has gone into the display cabinet, I joined the infant B&O Historical Society, just in time for them to tell me my Rivarrossi B&O President Washington and rake of Athearn coaches, both in blue and grey, was a big no no. The brass 'lay away' scheme that was operated there saw me first buy a Westside Q4b 2-8-2 which I had painted by the late Brian Coldicott and my weekly visits to pay a share were always tormented by the latest deliveries from the late Bill Eaglesham -T3's, S1a, EM1. There were boxes of exotic stuff from Walthers and other US producers like Campbell, Athearn, Chooch and the shelves were always full of great stuff, models by customers and staff. I recall Mike B of this parish working there, doling out neat xylene when Floquil dio-sol thinners were in short supply, Barry W who was also a BR driver interrupting his work to talk about incidents on his BR working days (iirc he was on HST's and was based at Saltley). I should say they sold lots of other stuff but I only had eyes for the B&O by then. In all that time I never laid more than 2 pieces of track and that was Peco 009 when I did a bit of freelance HOn30,that after Mike B had butchered an HO B&O C 16 0-4-0 into an SRRL On30 loco - he made a great job of it too.! I still haven't laid any track but watching Coachmann's exploits on here has got me at least to lay 5 pieces of cork sheet on baseboards, ready for my revived Heath station layout in a shed (only 40 years later!)   14. Geoff Burton is currently archivist of the GCRS and you should be able to get to him via the yahoo group 'gcrsforum' if you want to contact him about Kings Cross plates. I remember the 'Booking Hall' - think the owner was called Nigel Downend(?) - He commissioned Eric Bottomley to do a painting/print of Coronation/Duchess of Hamilton at Washington Union station next to a Baltimore & Ohio loco P7a 'The Royal Blue'. I was a long time B&O fan and had struck up a correspondence with Charles Brown, a raifan/ photographer who sent me some photos of the loco & train on tour in the US ( He also supplied NRM with the same prints for a display they were doing around the same time) Anyway Eric got in touch with me via a Uk member of the PRR history society, and it turned out he also knew artist Philip Hawkins, who lived near to me in the 1980's. We arranged to meet, photos and other information handed over and sometime later I was given a signed print.which I eventually donated, together with the photo material of the loco in America to the Midland Railway Centre, as it was on the way to my mother's home near Chesterfield. Sorry - got a bit reminiscent there!! Dave
