    Why is Windows 10 file explorer so utterly abysmal?

      Erm... You know that Windows famously alternates between good and bad versions, don't you? ;-)

      XP Good, Vista Bad, 7 Good, 8 Bad, 10 Good...

      Makes one wish to transfer to Apple. Son in law  uses both systems, W10 for work and Apple for all personal uses  There is no doubt which he prefers.

      10 not as bad as 8, but that doesn’t make it good. 7 was better. Myself, I use Mac out of choice, and only suffer W10 because it’s thrust upon me by my employer. Even then, I still do most work on the Mac.
