Many years ago I had a go at replicating this scene. This is the best photo I could find (scanned from a 'proper' photo!). Sadly this layout has long since gone.

The common name for these connectors are 'scotch locks'.  There's hundreds on eBay - you'll be spoilt for choice :-)
