  1. Well, you sneaked back without a hint of a coming return....good to see you back on here.

The vegetation you've created on here is very effective. I wouldn't let the tree issue put you off. If you're unhappy with them, re-do them gradually, but at all costs use the new momentum to progress with the layout.

I'll keep an eye on your progress.

  2. Al, just remember that you are doing this to please YOURSELF, not the punters on here. If YOU enjoy what do you do with it, that's all that matters.

Clearly, a lot of people on the Forum enjoy what you are doing and it's held in high regard.

At the end of the day, enjoy whatever you're doing and don't feel obliged. Easy words and I sometimes don't follow my own advice. Especially when I'm already planning behind the scenes while trying to find a few clear nights to pursue my main "hobby" (aka obsession).

  3. A far cry - and 380,000km away - from Gill Head, here's a mosaic from a couple of night's ago.

The principal crater is Copernicus. Both it, and Kepler to its left, are surrounded by bright "ray" systems caused by material ejected from the craters during their formation by meteoritic impact. Over 500 million years ago.

The mosaic is derived from around 15,000 video captures totalling 40Gb of data, over a total of around 3 minutes in 8 sections.

The scale of the picture is around 600 miles (1000km) in the E-W and N-S directions.

An animation showing the context of the image is also shown for reference.

I'll post another mosaic on here when further processing has been done.

  4. Fantastic, Neil!

No need to say great pics, as you're a known adept at the photo lark.

I thought I heard someone moving around in the Bunker. Now I realise it was you, clambering across the gill to get another photo angle.

Hope you're having a great time with your family. Feel free to post any further pics you see as relevant!

  5. Shaun, you can whinge as much as you want to on here.

I think there are areas of snobbery on this Forum and some of the people involved certainly don't want to be criticised in any shape or form.

I remember a few years back having one of my anti-snob rants, railing against those who see anyone modelling in EM as a snob. Neil (anotheran) came up with the cracking comment: "I don't think you're a snob because you model in EM, but because of all those stone walls you build!!"

No doubt someone took him seriously. We do what we like for our own reasons. However, there ARE people on here who love the adulation but don't like the merest hint of criticism, however helpful those comments might be. They play their punters along and have no intention of listening to any useful advice offered. I find that contemptible on a public forum.

    Hi all,

Again, apologies for the absence, I just can't get back into the swing of things. I have been doing bits here and there though. The wiring is completed at last and there is an ongoing period of test running prior to ballasting. I laid the platforms several weeks ago and all the stock I usually use to check clearances went through without issue until I ran a Class 08 and the coupling rods jammed! Some modification later and all is well, so this will be my preferred test loco in future.

I have a lot of catching up to do on RMWeb but will post a few photos over the weekend if the heat dies down a bit. I hope I get my MOJO back soon haha!

    Regards

    Mike

    Hi Mike.

Really good to see you back on here.

Just don't feel obliged to keep the punters happy. The mojo WILL return and remember it's a HOBBY, so enjoy as little - or as much - as you can manage.

    Best wishes,

    Jeff.

Don't forget a few mistakes now and again is the best learning curve.

    Regards Shaun

Completely agree. I've made PLENTY of those!

As somebody pointed out a couple of weeks ago, in another context on another thread, if you put stuff onto a public forum then you can EXPECT and MUST ACCEPT to take a degree of (hopefully constructive) criticism/ suggestions - WHERE NEEDED.

I've found this to be the principal driving force behind my improvement as a modeller in the 12 years I've been on RMweb. So, so helpful to get feedback.

About a week ago I sent Steve (Ramrig) some 2009 photos of my then "layout". We had a (little) chuckle. Hum hum. I was pleased with my work at the time.....then I looked on here. How many mistakes had I made? (Track geometry and depth, non-protypical, non-accessible sections, scenics, materials, mixed-time periods, unsafe working practices in the line....etc etc)

Anyone not prepared to take (even a modicum of) criticism is deluded. So thanks, Shaun, keep the advice coming! And I MUST visit the Grim Squatch-site more often. Possibly the only place I've seen on here where insanity persists on a larger scale (model size-wise) than on this thread!

  8. John, Jonathan.....

I am VERY grateful that, by one means or another, I seem to have a bunch of extremely knowledgeable, sensible, motivated people contributing to this thread. I applaud the fact that you, too, along with others like Rob, Jay, JohnB, David, Steve, Shaun etc (forgive me if I haven't mentioned you here) have the desire to CONTINUE to improve. Excellent, I completely concur!

You've kind of summed it up, Jonathan. Once something "niggles" it sits in the back of your mind and won't go away until you do something about it. I remember discussing EM with Jason around 2013. Although his wonderful Bacup layout was 00 it was clear that he wished he'd built it in EM. The seed of doubt persisted for a year after the start of KL2 and then something had to be done about it. All my beautifully laid 00 track was ripped up and replaced with EM.

I've spent the last 3 hours in the Bunker. I re-positioned a downpipe, painted some ridge tiles and did a number of trivial things, totalling maybe 40 minutes. The rest of the time I've been looking at the station building, measuring and sketching and pondering ideas. I'm going to let this issue "dwell" for a couple of months, though I'll be making a few enquiries regarding materials for "build 2" . Please don't think I'm unhappy with the current model, I'm delighted with how it has turned out. But I've set myself a challenge, even if it's a while before anything happens.

Now before those of you with a memory point it out, there is my Hell Ghyll Sidings 00 project that's well planned out. That isn't being shelved - it'll just get mothballed, temporarily, of course!

Ok, that's enough philosophising. I'm a graduate of John (Allegheny)'s school of pontification, you know!! 🤣🤣

  9. Morning (just) Shaun and Jonathan.

It's fairly warm in Cumbria - about 30C - but the whole heatwave will only last for a few days. Tomorrow we'll be down at around 20C. As always in the UK there is a media frenzy when it gets a little warm or cold. In 6 months time there'll be an over-reaction when it snows for the first time in 4 years. How will we cope if it gets "really" cold, down below zero (sarcasm intended). How did we cope in the past?

A late reply as I was in the observatory in the early hours. All set up, waiting for the moon to get to an acceptable altitude, a look at Jupiter - then the cloud came in, and not a single image taken....

Moving on, I've not given a lot of thought about the detailing of the platforms, benches etc. I'll bear in mind both of your links and I've had Sankey suggested for signage. All these things will be looked at later in the year.

I've actually (I know it's mad) been looking at the ways I can improve a mark 2 building. It's a bit of fun, but there's no harm in planning.

  10. Do you know, I just KNEW that I could count on you two (John and Rob) to see it the same way that I do.

I simply CANNOT for the life of me (and I've tried hard to understand it) see why anyone can continue to trot out the same stuff again, and again, and again with no real advancement. Anyway, we've probably had our fill with that one until the culprits raise their head(s) anew.

I'm quite serious about a second station building. I did it with the goods shed and I'm prepared to do it again with the station. Maybe wait until next year when other more pressing jobs have been done. It would be a fun thing to try....

Took a while Jeff but spotted it now!

Would it be work on the ridge’s?

Yes Ade. The ridge on the S&C station has a decorative fixture that I couldn't model in an exact, prototypical fashion. So I cut sections of 2mm x 1mm plastikard and drilled holes through, every 2.5mm, with a hand-drill.

Once painted and fitted it seems to match quite well. Still work to do, though.

As regulars will know, I am NEVER satisfied with anything I build until a few weeks after I move onto something else. It took a month or so before I stopped looking at the (known) faults in the viaduct.

If I were to build another station building, and it's a possibility sometime in the future - I have a diorama in mind - I could build it twice as fast and eliminate some of my "errors". But isn't that always the case with some of us on here. Certainly, building a 7mm scale building would be a doddle, but I'll never have the space.

Comes back to my oft-mentioned theme about learning from every build and trying to do your best. Unfortunately there are some who don't share my (pompous?) view, but that's their business, isn't it?

  12. There are still things to do on the station building, including 2 doors and an end barge board. But the building has been spruced-up a bit, including a (not very effective) window clean and additional paint. Other bits added, too, which I'll let you spot for yourselves.

The window frames and stone enclosures that surround them were built as units. Otherwise it might have been possible to buy laser-cut windows and fit them in. Maybe neater and cleaner (glass wise) but this concoction is my own to stand or fall by.

    A batch of pics...

  13. A couple of pics showing where I'm at.

Half-round Plastruct rod guttering has been fitted front and back and painted in Midland Red livery. Downspouts have been fitted to the front - I'll do the back tomorrow. There are 5 on the front side and I used 2mm rounded rod, curved where necessary with pliers. Again, painted red.

The roof has received a couple of slightly darker weathering coats, but the effect doesn't really show on the pics, so I might add more tomorrow for further emphasis.

    Anyway, here's the pics....

  14. I was fiddling round taking random pics earlier and this one took my fancy. Ok, the phone focussed primarily on the cutting in the foreground, but it puts the station into a (kind of) rural context. I'll get the DSLR on the same angle later and see if I can get the depth of field to get everything into focus.

A number of gutters have been fitted. May have some pics tomorrow, though downpipes won't be done by then.

Be warned though, some of the parts are tiny and the “carpet monster” loves them.

    Morning David.

Agree with you about the Modelu stuff - from what I've seen in the online catalogue. But I'll be sticking to my Plastruct rodding for the gutters on this one. If the end result, once done, is rubbish then I'll reconsider.

  16. Hi Jonathan.

Glad you like the chimneys. I've spent this afternoon fitting the flashing and ridge tiles, which I'll paint in an hour or so.

Your comment about the guttering "threw" me a little, though. I like to keep things simple and was planning on using the same Plastruct half-circular and circular rodding that I used for the goods shed. Nothing fancy, just very basic. Hadn't thought of anything beyond that.

  17. Steve, no problem with popping in every now and then. At least you do bother to look and comment. And take your time with your project. I'm actually NOT rushing any of the work on here - around 200 hours on the station building. It's just that I spend a few hours every day in the Bunker and after 18 months it gets me somewhere.

I don't want to finish Gill Head. No doubt I'll think of something to keep it going. Detailing will take months!

As for the James Webb telescope. Well, it just shows the very best that humans can achieve if we set our minds to it. Expectations were super high and, like the Hubble, they have been bettered.

Ade, moon imaging at this time of the year, and through until autumn, is the early hours of the morning. So hoping to start next week. Added bonus is I can double up with Jupiter, and maybe Saturn, once I get my 2am routine sorted.

I'll post anything half-decent on here as there are a few of you who are keen to see results.

  18. Work continues.....

All 4 chimneys made, in the correct positions, level sideways and vertically. This pic was taken after (about) the 6th acrylic wash, which I think will do. Flashings and main roof ridge tiles tomorrow with a fine rub-down of the stacks, if necessary - and a very dilute white acrylic pointing grout.

So, Ade, if you can't sleep because of the heat, you can look at this.

And Rob, I don't mind making chimneys but I just want to get most of the building finished now and have a break (gutters still to do, one barge board, a couple of doors....I think the gutter bit will be the next task).
