A fine show on Saturday and, after a break of 2 years, most welcome. It was good to catch up with people and there was a good selection of layouts, the new venue was easy to find too.

I had the pleasure of a bit of a play on Drewery lane, thanks to Stu and Tim, and got a few purchases, mainly books.

It was good to see Rycroft Arena which looks every bit as good as it does on here, Mr Tailby provided some O gauge inspiration with his very nice Templegate Wagon Works and Rossiter Rise is a very well modelled slice of London.

All in all, a very uplifting day and very well done to all involved.

Many Thanks for your kind words.  It was great to be able to hold an Exhibition, in a new Venue too.

We have learnt from the day, so there will be some changes for 2023 and beyond.

Already have booked three layouts, for whom it will be their FIRST ever exhibition.  More to add for 2023 and 2024 and obviously beyond.

Our Thanks to all that exhibitied and paid to enter.

That last layout was from the Mid-Essex club, they are planning a show in September.

17 September 2022 at ACL in Rayleigh Road, Hutton, Shenfield, Essex.  15 Layouts, and Trade Support (including CAVALEX) with demonstrations from Club Members and EMGS - with Refreshments and a Tombola.  Small Car Park on Site, around 10 minute walk from SHENFIELD railway station.

By the way Richard (in the image mentioned) is a happy person and a good modeller - perhaps the photographer caught him off guard.

For all those who are members of the Defence Discount Service scheme, I notice that Hornby & Corgi have now joined the scheme offering 10% discount.  Apply by obtaining a code.

    Cheers ... Alan

Sounds similar to the Blue Light Scheme - which has been in operation for some time now.

We have just received an update from Hornby:

Humbrol enamels can legally be sold in Britain.

They cannot be exported to Europe.

I understand Retailers can still seek to return stocks purchased this year, or as the note states Legally continue to sell to UK customers. IMHO it is around the potential to ingest MEKO, I suspect the level of solvent may have a quicker detrimental impact - but then who drinks paint or paints it directly onto their skin.

  6. If you mean the increased length BIN code use, then this will impact most if not all Online and Mail Order sales - even within bricks and mortar outlets.

Seemingly, from the communications sent out to retailers. There could be an issue if you do not use one of the larger process providers - such as WorldPay - with their terminals and back office combined services. Not sure how it may happen if you use Square, SumUp or any of the other many providers.

The changes - so they say - is to make purchases more secure and to reduce fraudulent card use. A little like the more checks now made on Contactless purchases since the £100 limit was enacted.

You would pay the new rate of VAT on ANY sales made from day one of the new rate, regardless of how old the stock is.

I was not mentioning a VAT Rate change, this was about increasing prices of old stock to the same level of new stock.

It is obvios that a VAT Rate increase will lead to a higher price being charged and the tax collected be higher.

Does not work like that - a friend of mine was threatened with prosecution from Trading Standards for having old stock & old prices & new stock with new prices on show at the same time (talking identical items here).

She maintained that it was fairer to the consumer to sell at the old price but to no avail.

Not sure on that, as the Legal Contract is based on each item, the Sale Price being agreed by both Parties. So in this case you can have different prices.

What you cannot undertake is to sell at a higher price than the label - unless the Purchaser has agreed to pay a higher price - again made a Contract, especially if the higher price includes an extra service such as wrapping. Though the issue on incorrect price labelling against charge does mainly cause an issue when using ePOS, which is why supermarkets normally give a higher Refund should such an issue arise - as a form of compensation.

How many model shops have more than one branch ? Not many

You obviously worked for a chain and their polices CAN be and often are different than one man bands who often do not have expensive EPS systems.

Then consider that a One Outlet operation has to take the MOQ, which may well be 6 items of the same product. Many would love to be able to just order in singles, but that is not how it happens in the Retail World.

Not only that but with say points you need to try and keep a good number to hand - otherwise a Customer wanting multiples of the same product may go elsewhere.

No as you cannot operate a two tier pricing rule. It is far easier to reprice the residual stock as it balances out the cost of the new items ordered at the new cost price. Anyway if you had 10 of the same kit in stock why would you order more?

Not sure that statement applies to all model shops.  Without bar codes and EPOS you can operate various tiers - which reflect the RRP at the different price points.

The limitations of EPOS - unable to have different prices for the same barcode - reduces the effectiveness.  As it is not just the Sales that it works against it also gives a skew to Stock Valuation for End of Year accounting as it is not a true reflection.  In addition if a supplier offers a reduction in Trade Price the stock value cannot be a true value on EPOS, as the value will be the same for all purchases using the same barcode identity.

Each to their own, at the day end.

Naturally you change as requested on VAT Levels, what the thread mentioned was increasing old stock to reflect the new higher Retail Prices. Hence my comment that if you do that then you pay more VAT, nothing to do with Vat Rates. I just pointed out that this would be the only time that you had no choice - same with if they reduce.

Retail Prices are actually 120% as they normally include VAT at the 20% Rate, hence why VAT Free is not a 20% reduction on the displayed price.

Think about cashflow - you need to be able to buy the new stock at the new prices, and depending upon the size of the price rise that may not be possible.

If you consider VAT, if you raise the price then you will pay more VAT.  Far easier to keep the retail price as at the time of purchase. The margin will be set on the original Trade and Retail figures. Obviously with any VAT Rate change prices will have to be adjusted from the time of any such change.

  13.  We need to be mindful that the announcement would have been recorded somewhile back. So not as some may suggest a knee jerk as another may well announce a new 00 version shortly. TV programmes are unlike social media, unless they are live broadcast.

THe LSL Blue Pullman with 'cyclops' light' CAD have been shown awhile back now. So could or might not be  acomplete new body form. The trick today is to create a set of moulds that can cater for different styles, so you can 'drop in' body differences.

  14. 5 Litre paint pots - after contents have been used  naturally - concrete in a small piece of plastic pipe.  Into this mounts a smaller diameter plastic upright.  Then lace the red/white plastic tape from pole to pole. So you can construct barriers to whatever length you need. These are fairly quick to put in place, as there is not fastening together required.

At Close of Play the tape is collected and disposed of.  The uprights removed from their bases and stored in heavy duty plastic sacks. The bases can be easily handled, as they still have their loop straps in place.  They are then stacked and stored in a shed until required again.

Cheap, effective and no issues with people trying to lean on them.  Some layouts do decline a barrier in front, so we have to point out that any damage sustained by the Public s not covered.

  15. Mid Essex MRC has for the second year running postponed their Annual Model Railway Exhibition, due to take place in September.

The Venue Owners have requested that any organisation seeking to undertake a Hire had to comply with certain requirements.  Fully understandable given the normal Monday to Friday use, and them seeking to ensure that they discharge fully their Duty of Care to Staff and their own user community.

So as with many a Club we hope to welcome back Modellers old and new back to our Exhibition in September 2022.

Also did not mention Gateshead Depot, as a Deltic haunt.  No mention of the close work with the DPS, whom own 3 - only a passing comment on worked with.  As to High Speed running, seems to not understand the speeds obtained on the railway at the time - difficult to compare todays system network with different track combinations and less pointwork etc.

Yes, the two-tone green does suit the 50 very well. Except for... that awful orange cantrail!!

Modern day safety requirement, like the high intensity lamp requirements on steam locomotives - even within a mock handlamp that are very bright.

I went to my local model shop here in Australia and the owner said that getting anything out of Hornby was a waste of time and that he'd have more luck getting blood out of a stone. He seems to be phasing out Hornby products and has gone for locally made products and

It could also be the fact that Hornby did pause export outside the UK for awhile after the Brexit date.  Coupled with a pandemic which has - and continues to cause - freight headaches.  There are loads of empty boxes sitting on docksides around the World.

However, exporting from a UK based model shop to Australia (and other Countries) is getting easier and quicker door to door. But as you correctly say you cannot see for yourself the model being tested in front of you.

Not sure how the Tier system has been rolled out outside the UK, as in some Countries the items go via an in-Country distributor which may also cause price and delivery differences.

Well if we're being silly, then D444 in its two-tone green.

A livery IMHO that 'sat' well on the bodyside.  Though not so much a fan of the maroon livery.

Still a fair number of identities and liveries to cater for, but which ones would sell.  Perhaps it is time for a poll to be undertaken.

Cavalex Models are pleased to announce a newly-tooled Class 56 in 4mm.

The model is already significantly advanced and currently at the tooling stage, having been in the works for the past few years. All variants of the 56 are being tooled, to accurately cover all 135 locomotives produced between 1976 and 1984. The Cavalex 56 has been designed completely from scratch, based on original works drawings from both Electroputere and BREL. We have incorporated numerous innovations into the model which we’re looking forward to showcasing.
