  1. Thank you very much everyone for you suggestions. I will try them and report back. Sorry for the late response. I've been off line for two days
  2. I have recently acquired Dapol's D and D1 class locos. Both run smoothly on DC but with the Imperium decoder they are rather jerky in performance. I have about 25 other locos, some proprietary, some kit built, with various makes of decoders and they all perform as one would expect. It was suggested to me that there is a CV setting which allows the loco to be run on DC with the DCC chip, and this should be changed but which CV, and to what value nobody seems to know. The Dapol website does not have any information about CV settings, not even the basic ones. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. Is there an alternative decoder I could use? Any help would be very much appreciated.
  3. Mainly the steps. The tabs on the etching don't seem to be in the right place to support the steps so I soldered them on to the spring dampers. I also had to increase the size of the curved recess n the back of the steps to fit in more closely. Holding the steps in place is difficult without an extra few fingers! I have managed in the past but this time it seems more difficult. Maybe it's an age thing
  4. Can anyone tell me if there are any bogies on the market suitable for SECR coaches, or bogies that can be modified to look the part? I've tried assembling Roxey kits with very little success. I'm building one of their Birdcage coaches and I don't want to spoil the overall appearance of what is a very fine kit.
  5. I wish to place a request for an item but I'm not sure how to do it. In the wanted section of the RM Web, it only seems to relate to eBay. Can someone please enlighten me. Thanks
  6. That is a good thought. Thank you. I'm going to make enquiries. Actually, if anyone has done that I'd be interested. Worst case scenario: I'll double head the trains which was not uncommon.
  7. I agree that Dapol should have included traction tyres. They enable my D and Schools classes to pull reasonable length trains up a gentle incline. Maybe I'm just unlucky but both the D and D1class were missing a buffer. When I queried this with Rails of Sheffield they said "Dapol have produced these so that the buffers are more of a push/pull system so they will pop in and out...." Only one of my thirty plus locos acquired over the last 20 years of modelling has lost a buffer. I am very disappointed and thinking of selling the D1 as it is not up to the task. I've waited many years for someone to produce a 4-4-0 for the South eastern section of British Railways. My layout is based in the hop-picking area of Kent so these locos were very common on the front of hop-pickers specials. It is certainly a very nice looking loco, but I would quite happily forego a few of the finer details such internal framework and a lit firebox for better performance.
  8. Thanks Mike. I will try to find that. Regards Jonathan
  9. For the past 15 years I have operated my layout on DCC very successfully with all my earlier locos performing as expected, i.e. smoothly especially at slow speeds. However some of my more recent purchases have exhibited a slight hesitance, jerkiness even, more noticeable at slow speeds. My most recent acquisition the Hornby Terrier runs really smoothly using my old H & M duette. With the Hornby R7150 decoder it is anything but smooth. Has anyone else experienced this? I tend not to change any of the settings unless I need to as the factory settings are usually ok. Is there anything that I can tweak that might help improve the running? I might add that occasionally this loco suddenly accelerates rapidly at a rate that Mr Stroudley would be very impressed with!
  10. I have just built and painted a "Thanet" coach in crimson /cream and need advice on the correct lining to use. Fox Transfers list combinations of straw, black and yellow, and I'm confused as to which is correct. If it's any help the period is the mid 50s. Can anyone shed any light on this subject or point me in the direction of a reference source? Thanks
  11. It was quite dramatic - smoke emitting from the hole on the roof. It's going to need some drastic plastic surgery! Are you suggesting that there should be a resistor at R1 rather than a link? Curious
  12. The attached photos should help. It was hot enough to burn the roof. Unsure of what exactly had been destroyed I was reluctant to plug in a decoder in case it too was damaged. It might bee that all the circuitry/components do is the lights. Since Friday I have acquired some attachments as per suggestions so I'll try one. I'm very happy soldering. Thank you.
  13. Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I will certainly make some more enquiries. I never thought of directly wiring the chip. It shouldn't be too tricky. I'll let you know how I get on.
  14. I have a Hornby class 71 with a burnt-out control board (don't ask!). I have tried unsuccessfully to get a replacement from Hornby and Peters Spares. They both need a parts number before they can start looking, but I don't believe Hornby have issued a service sheet for it. I am reluctant to bin this one as it is the best running loco in my collection (still OK on analogue but I need it to work in DCC). Any help would be much appreciated.
