Agree. I cancelled my prepaid order for Bellerophon due to it being clear that it did not have the fully operating valve gear. KR Models refunded in full with no quibble. After I got the refund they asked why I had cancelled and I told them it was the valve gear issue.

This could be an advantage if you can't find the receipt. 😉 Or you can buy and pay on line and have full proof of purchase with details.

Irish customs are very fussy about the correct documentation. I purchased an item from Canada about a year ago. It arrived in Dublin then was returned because of incomplete documentation. (I'm not saying this is the case with your coaches). It took months to get back to the sender.

I checked the feedback of the person selling the Murphy Models locomotives. Every feedback refers to the dame item number which I found very odd. I asked the seller and this is the reply.

There are currently 32 Murphy Models class 121 locos on e bay, all brand new and all from China. However these were all sold out ages ago and command high prices on e bay, but the Chineese ones are all around €184.

I thought of that before posting, but I don't see how buying a present the conventional way would be bad for domestic harmony even if the surprise was discovered. Sending cash in the post then losing it would definitely upset domestic harmony.

The short answer is 'No' Apart from the risk of the cash going AWOL, you have no proof of payment. Even with a postal order you still have no proof of payment. You can always take the risk, or use plastic or paypal. Bank transfer is also an option which provides proof of payment but without any protection if the goods fail to arrive. If by 'domestic harmony' you mean that you want to keep the payment secret from SWMBO, then perhaps you have other important issues that need addressed.
