  1. Thoughts with the crew involved in the incident near Markinch being investigated by RAIB https://www.gov.uk/government/news/maintenance-train-runaway-near-markinch Not a good situation for the crew to be in, having to choose to bail out a moving train and I'm slightly surprised the MPV's are still running if just hitting a tree can disable their brakes. Jeff.
  2. Its a known problem with the design basically down to Network Rail taking an existing continental design of splice plate which acts as a hinge and making it rigid. A recent freight derailment probably has its root cause linked to these plates and I believe some regions have now banned their use at least in turnouts until more investigation is completed.
  3. Could it be as simple as its a light coating of rust on the discs as they look to be new wheelsets? Jeff.
  4. I suspect its the old problem of you can either cause lots of disruption for a short period of time and let the engineers fix it or run a more regular service but not be able to get back to full operations until you shut the line for a weekend or so
  5. Unfortunately it looks like hes had to go back to the original design with no preformed switch blades.
  6. The website is back up and running but the templates seem to have vanished.
  7. It also means the cast can be used where you have to have extended wing checks such short angled crossovers.
  8. Methinks you're missing one of the main points of the services, as neither of those options is any use if I have to be in London for a meeting early am. It would mean travelling down the day beforehand and staying overnight in London. A much more expensive option I'd suggest.
  9. Accidentally clicked on the tread rather than the new posts button and couldn't help but chuckle at the 2nd pos, quoted below. Nope be nearer 3!
  10. Don (et al) The timber is known up here as 'bog mats' and used for on/off tracking plant where no permanent access exists. Given the number possibly used for protecting the concrete walkways from tracked machines Cheers jeff.
  11. Jim, In the photo taken standing between 66194 and 66746, whats the wagon in the distance with the yellow end and big window? Cheers
  12. I wouldn;t think they'll be getting more unless DBS are going to sell their ones which seems unlikely as they were the only ones.
  13. Awww, look Mummy, a little baby signal just waiting to grow up......
  14. Jim, you're top picture on the previous page (post 985). Is that Bescot looking through where the Down Tower used to be? Must have been some sight to see it come down if it was. Cheers Jeff.
  15. Yes and no in my opinion. Back then when SPT or plug in was the only means of communication then it wasn't an issue. Nowadays with mobile and similar in cab then having the controlling box clearly identified is preferable, particularly with the largely contract trackside workforce.
  16. As others have said it was the western system plus and minus like everything else but the LM system won out eventually. 203A & B are probably the one track circuit (and hence signal) that has been split either due to length or possibly for clearing a crossing. Is there still a barrow type crossing at Starcross? Its been a long time since I was last down that way, class 50's were still in charge back then! Jeff. Jeff.
  17. Think Exxx are controlled signals Dxxx are down line auto signals Uxxx are up line auto signals. HTH Jeff.
  18. The signal by the crossover reads from memory, to either the Up, Down (wrong direction) or the yard (its not a loop on signalling terms still). The one on the Down is indeed a limit of shunt. The 'relic' is the telecoms concentrator for the area. HTH Jeff.
  19. Won't be surprised if at least 1 or 2 on that list don't end up as spares donors to get the other up and running. Suspect it might even be as few as 6 or 7 runners at the most.
  20. Just as an aside, NR do have a significant examination & maintenance responsibility of structures on closed lines. I thought most of the closed lines were left with BRB upon privatisation? Jeff.
  21. The webcam from the other end is a Network Rail one, accessible through the main NWR site. Cheers Jeff.
  22. The HST is somewhere between Innerwick and Grantshouse as that was the section fitted with the TOWS warning hooters as it is bi directional. From the Countryside around I'd say up at the Innerwick end, North of Cockburnspath.
  23. Colas liveried 56087 was out North of the Border today route learning to Prestonpans Goods loop. No idea why but it ran into the loop twice in the space of an hour or so so can't have got too far North inbetween. Jeff.
  24. Any likelyhood of you making it north of the border on the tank trains Jim? We're about to kick the spare Colas 66 out of the tamper sidings at Stirling, believe its going to stable in the little spur at the North end off the Down main. Unfortunately means that all those nice semaphore brackets will be going as well.... Cheers jeff.
