  1. If that`s your first attempt at building Walschaerts valve gear then that is a job well done. Looks great on the video as well. Regards, Jim.
  2. Hadn`t realised my mistake till it was too late. I`ve put it down to my age and not paying attention.
  3. Just a shout for H and A models, Put a small order in last Wednesday afternoon. Items arrived Saturday morning. Great service considering the upheaval going on at the moment. Regards, Jim.
  4. Hi Neil, Loaded the pictures. Hope I`ve done it correctly. See what you think. Hope it might be useful, Regards, Jim.
  5. Hi, just looked at your request regarding a DJH Brittania kit. Are you looking for a completed loco or the kit itself? I have the K57 kit that came to me 80% built but minus a few pieces. It would require a motor and gears, tender wheels and a pony truck. The loco body with all the plumbing has been built, smoke deflectors are built but not attached, tender ladder is built but not attached ( both the items are in a bag ). The tender and chassis are built but separate. The loco chassis, cylinders and coupling rods etc are all assembled, but as I said, it`s missing the motor and middle driving wheel ( Romford I think ). None of the above has been painted. It may be completely not what you are looking for but as a nearly completed kit it might be. If it`s any use to you ,fine. I don`t want anything for it. I just won`t have the time to complete the build etc so I`d be pleased if it went to someone who could. Regards, Jim.
  6. Have to say I find it interesting to see inside some of the subjects that have been picked to show. As modellers we do our own research into our various layout choices and we may well know something of the program content already, but as a program for general viewing I think it covers it`s subject well. Hope there`s more to come. I`m also pleased to see other channels showing different sides of the railway world.
  7. Thanks for the answers. I`ll have another try tomorrow. The problem may well be at my end. Jim.
  8. Hi, would anyone know whether modelrailwayscenery.com is operating at present?, as I`ve tried to get on their website but get the server not found answer. I just wondered if things have changed due to the current situation. Many thanks, Jim.
  9. Thanks everyone for all your replies, I too have never seen a picture of the crest in blue other than on a Hornby model. What made me ask the question in the first place was Fox transfers asking the choice of black or blue crest, so I'm going with the black one. Reading in the books I have, I've never seen a blue backed crest mentioned. I only chose that particular version of the loco because it would be slightly unusual compared to the others. Thanks once again for your help, Jim.
  10. WM183, Thank you for your comments but there are far better soldered models on here than i`ve managed! It`s always a challenge to try and make a clean job of it. Most of the tender has been soldered, but a few white metal fittings where glued in where it was difficult getting the iron in. I haven`t started on the chassis yet, Just waiting for some sprung hornblocks to arrive before tackling that. Best wishes, Jim.
  11. Very nice indeed. Always good to see the metalwork going together before the paint arrives. Best of luck with rest of the building program. Jim.
  12. 21C1, Thanks for your reply. After I`d asked the question I carried on looking in the books I have and I found one sentence which suggested the crest started out with a black background at first, which would suit for what I am modelling. When it was changed to blue I don`t know or why. I think you are right regarding the smokebox number plate and I`ll do some more checking on that. Many thanks for your help, Jim.
  13. I have a black and white picture 45157 Glasgow Highlander taken with British Railways on the tender and I think the crest on the badge is a black but I wondered if anyone would know when the change came to the blue crest as I`m ordering one from Fox transfers and don`t want to get the wrong one. Many thanks, Jim.
  14. Many thanks gents for your suggestions. Simond, I had a look at your thread on the Duchess, in particular the fitting of horn blocks. Very interesting to see. Almost going into model engineering rather than kit building. I don`t have the machining capability you have but I think I`ll invest in a set of Slaters hornblocks and see where I can go from there. The work side of it doesn`t worry me, I like the challenge, It`s getting it right was the bit I was concerned about. So far, from building the tender, the kit seems to go together well. Brossard, I`m not a member of the GOG, just an ordinary modeller having a go at a bigger kit for a challenge. No doubt I shall hit a brick wall now and again! Hal, I`ll try and find the threads you spoke of. Best wishes , Jim.
  15. I`ve had this kit for a number of years and it`s been a bit of a stop start attempt at building it. Because I concentrated on my 4mm layout it got left in it`s box. But recently as a break from 4mm, I`ve resumed having a go at the Black Five. The tender is mostly built apart from one or two parts that will go on later. I want to start on the loco chassis and I would like to fit sprung horn blocks but having never done it before I wondered if anyone knows of any articles written on the subject or is it a case of learning as you go along? I haven`t touched the chassis etching yet so no measuring of axle diameters etc have been done yet. I believe Slaters do 7mm sprung horn blocks and I thought of using a set if measurements match up unless anyone knows of another make that might suit better. Many thanks, Jim.
  16. Hap, I did the same as you. Straight board down one side of the garage. Based on Camden, with a few differences due to board joints etc. I fitted a Locomotech turntable motorising kit to my modified Peco turntable.Easy to fit and a quiet runner but I line track up by mark one eyeball!! The height I chose was to clear the wing mirror on a Ford Fiesta but I wish now I`d made it higher as viewing would be better ( looking across rather than down on the layout ). Best of luck with your project
  17. Looking at your pictures I reckon that`s a great result for your efforts. I`ve scratch built valve gear in 4mm and that was hard enough, especially trying to hold things while filing etc. so hats off to you in 2mm. Jim.
  18. I`m sure these bugs sit around just waiting to ruin our attempts to create a good finish. I`m afraid the birds round here like the food on the feeders more than chasing their natural food! Like you, I tend to spray paint outside when conditions allow which at the moment here have been good temperature wise, but far too windy. I f I paint something small enough ( eg a loco body ) I try and cover it with something like a shoe box until at least the paint is hard enough to stop the little blighters sticking to it. Best of luck with your backscene.
  19. Hi Michael, Thank you for your reply. You`re correct in saying there maybe brass parts in the model, mainly because I had to detail it myself ( as it was only a basic parts kit ) and I`m pretty sure I used brass when I couldn`t get nickel silver. So, I will look for an etch primer in due course. Many thanks, Jim.
  20. Hi Ian, Many thanks for that. From the picture I mentioned, I felt it was an A but just couldn`t quite make out the number. Thanks for your reply, Jim.
  21. Afternoon all, I`m about send off to Fox transfers to complete a Black five as Glasgow Highlander. I wonder if anyone could tell me what the shed code might be for the model when it ran for a while with British Railways on the tender? The only picture I`ve found is in a copy of Modellers Backtrack from Dec 1992. The photo shows the positioning of tender lettering and cab side number position but I can`t make out the shed code. I chose this particular combination as it was plain black in 1948 and a little bit different. Many thanks, Jim.

  23. I have a Jamieson Nickel silver kit that I need to paint. I take it I would need a primer coat and wondered if an ordinary automotive rattle can type would be good enough or would something more specific be required? As I don`t have a spray booth at the moment I will need to wait for some decent weather to do it outside when I would be able to use my spray gun for final colour. Many thanks, Jim.
  24. Thanks Johnster and DavidCBroad, One of the first things I had looked at was re-wheeling with better wheels but thought by the time I`d done that I might as well look at changing the chassis. You`ve all made valid points which have been very useful. I`m not worried about pulling power as such as my layout is an end to end MPD, so basically is a diorama with some movement. I enjoy the challenge of making or improving things. One of my loco`s is the NE version of the 8F and that will go round the tightest curve on the layout. I should say that the layout is DCC so I`m not sure if the that will be another challenge with the Ringfield motor. As it is, on DC , it fair gallops along due to the gearing. So, a number of things that you have all suggested that I hadn`t thought of and my thanks for that. Regards. Jim.
  25. Agree with you 34, many checks will have to be made before deciding which route to take. Iv`e got a couple of spare motors so they will come into the equation when deciding which way to go. I don`t mind trying a scratch built chassis, it`s more a question of getting bits and pieces together to see how things will turn out. Anchor points between chassis and body would be the first thing to check I think and carefully tidying up the cab end. Looks like it will be a challenge. Many thanks, Jim.
