  1. Kal has done his best to educate me on the locos and their eras and their liveries. I like a number of the steams. I am heavily influenced by his favourites because he talks about them. I like A4s such as the Mallard, a number of the prototypes such as Kestrel and Lion, sectorisation, the little shunters 08 etc, with the diesels it is often the livery that I really like. EWS, Pendolino, Malcom, just a few. I particularly like the weathered ones, and have recently started weathering myself. Because we run Heritage and preservation it allows us to basically run anything that we like. The idea of the Heartbeat programme set in the 1960s through to modern day pretty much is covered. We do have some earlier steams. Kal loves the big BR blue and green. We have a mish mash of liveries, mainly because he will fall in love with a loco then I help choose the livery. We both like bright colours. We also choose a lot of film/series related vehicles. Basically we are kids in a sweet shop.
  2. Thank you both. Newark.... Kal (my other half) says he believes it is a fairly new show and looks reasonably big. So there is a good chance we will make that one. Leamington Spa is too far away. Kal being an electronics engineer prefers to run a telecomm network rather than a control network that most DCC systems use, thus he uses Loconet. He says given a bit of time he might even design his own bus designed on ethernet, but with all we are doing at the moment it is not a top priority at the moment. his goal is to have between 10 and 20 trains running under automated schedule whilst still allowing upto 4 operators to run trains manually within the schedule. His big likes are 43s, A4s, and 153s in that order. One of the main criteria for our layout was for him to be able to run full length HSTs 9+2.
  3. Hey! Thank you for all the likes. The loft end you see is 43'9"x11'6. Each side is 4'3" in depth. As you see there are several tables areas that are really little more than place holders. Though we have set them out with some dressing. There has been quite a few changes since that video. The main station is finally taking shape. RAF Zollywoods heliport is developing. But as I explained earlier I am using up old picture stock at present, before the latest stuff goes up. The waterfall is my favorite bit, I am extending it soon to join it to the cove and RAF Zollywood. This time I will take pictures as I go to show how I made it. The waterfall is in the Hogwarts / Harry Potter area and was based on a frozen waterfall that I fell in love with, I decided it was magical. There is no waterfall per-say in Harry Potter but the water around Hogwarts had to go somewhere, and Goathland (I mean Zollywood) has Mallyan Spout. And Zollywood has a river behind, and Hogsmeade station (also Goathland) supposedly has water for the boats to come up to, so they all flowed together. There are several Heartbeat references been shown next. Aidensfield Arms, Scripps garage, The Church. There is a reference to Greengrass' farm, and its real life camping is included, another to the stately home, and the police house. This was the first area we did, and we have moved on a lot. Along the way a lot of good people have offered balanced critism which has helped us improve our skills. We have been very pleased with the response since we decided to upload our layout here. It also encourages me to look around at other peoples work here, and there is a LOT of admirable work. I love 'On My Layout' people of all levels do work that we find mmmm nick....I mean copyable. Having built this over the last 2 years we have relied on a lot of bought resin buildings, but recently we have expanded into weathering, and expanding our skills with the intention of doing one specific area from scratch. Thus seeing work likes Trains12 is really great because he shows it in the process of being bought to life
  4. Unfortunately you are too far north for us at the moment. I believe my husband subscribes to that magazine, so I will hunt around, copies are scattered everywhere. I didn't know your connection except that it was obvious there was one. I could see the original thread owner Trains12 on page one , I have made it to page 16 so far mostly looking at pictures and leaving some likes a long the way. I found the lighthouse I suspect elements of that work might end up being snaffled when we later do our two seaside areas. If you do a show further south I would be very interested in seeing it in the flesh. I like how Peter separates his boards. I love seeing how people made their stuff not just seeing the finished item. Our own mistake is that at first it did not occur to us take pictures of the layout scenic items as we made stuff we never considered our work good enough. Noticed Peter's trophy very nice. Will as you say check out his other work, Water Mill Halt will be the first.......finishing here first.
  5. THe Britfarmer Thank you, a friend Doverferries gave them to me. They originate from Ten Commandments. You get 3 brass etchings in a pack. They are a bit fiddly but well worth the effort (and perhaps a little swearing). I used a little bit of tissue paper and matching blue paint to make the 'curtains' Class 108 Thank you. I have a bundle of old pictures that I am posting in byte sizes, when I use them up I will be putting up to date ones. We have several projects on at the second. but it will be a little while before I use them. Several of these pictures have already had helpful comments which have encouraged us to enhance them. People should feel free to comment or offer advice.
  6. I initially came to look because 7APT7 had put a clever craftsmanship on a picture of mine. Boy am I glad I did. It's lovely to see so many water features. I adore water features, these are well thought out. One of mine has a trawler which would, in real life, probably be hard pushed to get into its cove/harbour . I also like the Abbey and the White building. It's nice when someone puts a nice remark on your work, but as 7APT7 really gets water features that makes it special. So thank you. I will eventually 'trawl' through your whole thread. Very nice work indeed. I am sure I would have noticed this thread before long because I send a lot of time looking at my layout work. Great work, impressed. Also like the lighthouse, must check if you show how you made it...........
  7. Some more photos of Zollywood. The B.R.UT.E. Trolley were an etched product given to me. A little closer, seeing where I painted a bit of tissue and added it to make the curtains that they usually have An even closer look A view showing the river running behind Zollywood A view showing the coaling area beyond
  8. Thank you very much. I went and saw your own layout Tynsleyfield, Well worth a look and posted there too. .
  9. dt, or is it fd?????? I find you loitering here, incommunicardo, commenting on poor Jukebox's layout......and you have a really nice layout of your own! You should as least give him the opportunity to reciprocate. I bought some of those white metal doggies I mentioned a while ago., so you can finally expect your reward for giving me those wr/etched B.R.U.T.E. trolleys. There is an Alsatian, 2 collies, a corgi and two mutts. Throw a link to something specific if you fancy a specific colour match. You can't say fairer than that, you give me some fiddly etchings which I have to put together and tinker with, and I give you some nicely painted dogs in return. So its' a BLACK Alsation, 2 BLACK collies, a BLACK corgi, and 2 BLACK mutts. LMAO. Seriously though do you just want doppelgangers of mine? Jukebox, As he has no layout thread of his own (none that I have found on RMweb as yet) you realise your in trouble don't you He's not coming on mine unless he presses the 'like' button regularly Which means I will have to come wind him up here......sniggers. Jukebox if you want me to remove this post, because it's trivial and annoying, just say mate and I'll edit it, I'll find another way of bickering with the old reprobate.
  10. Some more view of Zollywood our Heritage / Preservation station. These are old pictures. Some updating has taken place. The grass was deemed too luminous and recoloured, and the autumnal colours reduced, and an attempt to make the trees more realistic. But for now these pictures help set the scene. The large tree in the centre was homemade from scratch. I plan to use up a number of old stock photos first. Then move onto the current colouring and modelling. Once current pictures are uploaded these older pictures are pretty much redundant. Although these areas are slightly out of date, I would still be happy for any comments on how to improve the area. At best you might agree with what I have done, at worst point out a far better idea that I can incorporate. Hope you like them.
  11. The idea of Kalborough (which is on the rhs lower track level) is that it has been hewn out of the bed rock. Originally with a number of adjacent storage tunnels used by the military for cold war storage below the granite rocks of Port Lynn. As part of the cold war dividend it now provides a storage area for one of the major leasing companies providing stock to the TOCs. Also from below Port Lynn the upper track level emerges at the back of the layout and has a pair of tracks. A road from Port Lynn drops down and passes in front of Kalborough station then sharply rises up to a union station above it Kalborough East, Once we have done some work on the Kalborough area, Kalborough East will be next on the list for a make over and a polish. 2012 0610 004 Trains heading East from Kalborough's main Art Deco station exit via tunnels going under the union station Kalborough East and come out into a refuelling area in another cutting before disappearing yet again into more tunnels. Either to the old loft where four tracks then eventually circle back to the lhs or three tracks run into another fiddle yard where they terminate under the last table in the new loft above the fiddle yard on the upper level is a turntable which will be permanently sited with a diesel MTD. Also on the upper level at the back 2 tracks run into the old loft. A point leads off to the Diesel MTD. THe plan at the moment is to build a MTD as a tribute to St Blazey Roundhouse. This completes the initial run around Arboretum Valley in the new loft. In the long term we will use the old loft to house a mining village then a scale scratch built Dawlish seafront which will then swing back into a tribute to either Blackpool South or Central or Fleetwood in order to incorporate our Blackpool tram collection. Then it will pop out into a small Ribblevale-esgue station and a viaduct before returning to the New loft and table one on the left hand side. Thereby creating a cross section of regions within England. The old loft, however, is still in the planning stages and no tables are in place yet. Bearing in mind we have taken two plus years to get to here, and we have plenty to do still in the new loft. So they are for the future. But it never hurts to think ahead. Having now done a 'quick' run around the layout to date. I will next go back and expand on individual areas. An odd picture or two of some actual locos or trains might even manage to get to see the light of day.

  13. Kal (my husband) and I also went today. I was particularly interested in the weathering on a couple of layouts which as it happened included this one. I took a couple of pictures of yours although the light streaming in through the curtain behind it made it difficult to get a good result. Am I right in thinking that the industrial chimney behind the Thomas the Tank engine Butchers building (nice choice we have one in our layout too , hence my interest in the weathering) is in fact O gauge on your 00 gauge layout? I thought it a rather clever idea, the chimney being a much better scale I posted my iffy pictures on our layout. Then when I looked at recent posts there you were........
  14. Went to the Lincoln & District Model Railway Club today. Kal spent ages at the DEMU stand, we came away with a form to apply for membership. Their magazines certainly had some interesting stuff. He also spent ages with Paul C talking about Zimo (as they usually do ) Paul was showing off his new Network Rail 57 which Martin had wired up the lights prototypically, and a very nice job too. Who says you can't make use of the 10 functions on the Zimo. We also looked at a copy of a rail simulator 'Trainz Simulator 12' that was being demoed, and came away with a copy. Attached are a couple of pictures from the show I was interested in the weathering on this building. Summat Collery. And this one a little closer. Unfortunately the light was very bright so the pictures are not of any great standard These two from another layout were also similarly afflicted but the weathering was still of interest and I noticed they appear to have used the industrial chimney from the O gauge on an 00 layout to good effect. This if I remember correctly was Lincoln Central The light through the window on this one is the worst
  15. Some really nice work, only looked at the last few pages so far. I am browsing the forum.(like a demented butterfly) But there is some lovely stuff here. Will definitely be back for a better look. I like the water, it's something I have tried several times on our own layout. Also like the sentences you add to pictures to set the scene. So glad I stumbled a across your layout.
  16. Very interested in the loco weathering. your track colour is nice too. I have been researching graffiti and it's great to see where someone has already had a go. Just looked at the last 2 pages. Will be back again though for a better look.

Kal is collecting the helis that he used for his daily commute in earlier life. Still needs Westland Gazelle and Scout. If he had the chance he would add the fix wing as well but you don't often see C-130s or VC10s in the appropriate scale. Plus fitting them on the layout would be interesting though I could hang them from the ceiling. Though you would have to duck. I only dabbed Humbrol maskol on the windows. (this is whistling innocently not sleeping on the job) I hand painted the bogey section, and hand painted the rails to the appropriate white, yellow or orange, The weathering was a little dark (plus I initial dabbed some on by hand - not my finest hour) and the final soot(?) on the fans and exhausts was barely visible. A darker weathering item was clearly needed. I'll explain later when I post the lot, and any comments will be greatly appreciated. Never blogged before, though I chat a LOT. I don't tend to do too much cleaning of my photographs either except where the wallpaper is glaring. People need to see the mistakes to comment and help us improve.
  18. For anyone who doesn't want to wait for me to run around the layout with initial pictures we are on You Tube Be aware this will waste 20 minutes of your life LOL. There will be an update soon, we did a bit of tidying up before posting pictures here on RM Not long to go to the end though, then I will expand on previous areas.
  19. Thank you 464444 I responded in full on your thread. ( Regards the did I paint the back scenes, for anyone only reading here, in short yes I did paint our back-scenes.) Thank you for making the pre shading easy to find. Thank you RSLR The ice cream van is temporarily at the RAF open day. Though it does move about lot, later pictures will confirm. i notice it's the same kids though, greedy little pigs. The only reason they're skinny must be all that running to catch the ice cream van....unless there's a friendly invisible transporter nearby. Maybe I need to include an indent on the grass and Scotty's head floating in mid air We have a nice chinook. for the see thru aluminium.

Oh rats, I re looked at your threads from the beginning, still missing the pre shading, when I got to this last page I was gonna ask you kindly to point me in the right direction.....and here you already have. Thanks your an angel. Still wasn't all bad I added a few likes etc along the way Talking of aircraft when we expand the pictures on RAF Zollywood (they are all done, just I want to get around the loft space once before digressing, I'm rather good at digressing LMAO), you'll see a nice selection (shop bought Corgis mostly) of helicopters and a little spitfire. So please look out for obvious mistakes and please advise. Constructive criticism can only improve the game. The other half will post soon he's been suffering from Man Flu (very life threatening I'm informed by other wives ) And he's got to catch up with real life work first. (with some sneaky forays off to the layout for a touch of modelling 8) Thanks again. Still not read ALL the thread yet........I'll be back. Just looked at video I will have to lock husband out of modelling room if I do that to his loco stock......he'll have a seizure. He'll be banned until the weathering hides all the dark shading. Plus I can't do that to his air stock....though the chinook would look great.....I have to go find the follow up videos....... Keep talking about my weathering...a lone picture to show it's not all gumpf. It is my only loco repaint to date though and I chose a heavy version so I could try several techniques all at once. A number of pictures will go on Arboretum Valley in due course although I may add a workbench, time will tell. I have a picture of a reallife one I copied but I need to re-find it and acknowledge the real owner. I had posted it (on another forum) but not added the content which RM rules ask for.
  21. Lol I was on yours praising you while you were on ours praising us. That's a pleasant coincidance

Lol I was on yours praising you, and you were on ours praising us. Is it great minds think alike? or fools never differ.......? Oh dang could have edited my last post...still getting use to this forum.....love their emotes........

........Most of the weathering is done with acrylic paints (Tamiya/Valejo) and applied with either an airbrush, washes and dry brushing. Another technique using an airbrush allows is that of preshading. I believe this originates in military modelling circles but people like George Dent are advocating it's use now. It kind of gives a softened approach to faded worn paint as demonstrated on the Sentinel and wagons above. Another product worth looking out for is the original formula Johnsons Klear floor polish which has a multitude of uses though is hard to come by now. I believe Humbrol have brought a similiar product out the same properties too...... The plan is to use some good quality lining paper to make a new backscene which will add curves to the corners thus loosing the straight lines. Well that's the plan anyway! Cheers, Mark I have a nice airbrush, I have just started using it since last Xmas. I have citadel, tamiya especially the nato ones, humbrol, rail match. I want to look at the Valejo before I buy so far I have not tracked them down locally. I understand their thinner air ones are ideal for an airbrush although I am happy to thin acrylics or enamels to make washes I use a syringe so I can reasonably match colour. I particularly like to look at the weathering products. Do you use Humbrol weathering powders? There does not seem to be much on their use on the model rail forums. I tried a cheap wagon and trees first. We have one George Dent book. My husband did notice that the military sites are considered the elite in some aspects of colouring. At the moment there is still so much to keep my interest here, though I plan to look. I have hand painted all my life in various medias. But each media has it's own tricks and tips. Once I have finished putting up the initial areas on our layout I will put some of my airbrushing up. The same with Klear, I use varnish and water products, have yet to track Klear at a reasonable cost. We only recently decided to put our work up On My Layout. A number of people like yourself have posted or put up likes. As a matter of courtesy I have checked them out. you have been the most expansive with hints, thank you very much for that. It's nice to know we are mostly on the right track. I personally prefer to check out people like yourself in as much as people who have actually got their work on display and then say this is how to do it make it easier to see what is achievable. I will definitely continue to look in on your thread. Thank you for the term 'pre shading' this will make it much easier for me to look it up. We had hopes with Hornby owning Humbrol they would colour match with easier names for the model rail market, this may still happen. Thank you again.

I like the lighting in the last couple of pictures, the weathering is also nicely understated (I tend to be heavy handed on mine, finding pictures which require so much weathering can take me a while to source ). What are you planning for the back ground?
