  1. Sorry to hear that - I have used online banking with Lloyds for about five years now and a few weeks ago I was able to open a savings account with just a couple of mouse clicks and no need for a card reader. Lloyds don't use those for personal accounts but I do have a card reader for the Club account. However I recall having to use one with Nationwide when I had an account there. After opening the account, I immediately got an email with the new account number and an invitation to transfer money - all done in about five minutes. .
  2. I hope you always had a navigator when you were flying - on my map the junction between the M42 and the M25 is called the M40. I assume "fat fingers" on a small keypad are to blame 😃 Changing the subject - I assume all is well at the Midland Railway Study Centre - unlike the ground floor of the Silk Mill Derby Museum of Making (see below) https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/news/derby-news/gallery/13-incredible-aerial-photos-showing-8850099 .
  3. Even Companies House don't check any identification to create a Limited Company - see the BBC link below where one person who appears to be of Chinese origin has set up a number of false companies using 16 addresses all from one street in Worksop. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-67053586 .
  4. When it was first announced (March 2022), the Bachmann "Model Collect Create" shop at Hinckley was said to be following the Games Workshop store experience https://www.keymodelworld.com/article/Bachmann-launches-first-retail-store-hinckley-leicestershire However when I look at the Bachmann site for a list of retailers, it isn't mentioned - so either they haven't updated the list recently, or it has closed - any one know any more ?? .
  5. In that case, I apologise but . . . . the BBC report says "at the event" which to me meant GETS as that was the show being discussed in the report. No mention whatsoever of NEC. .
  6. A quote from the BBC link shown on the previous page Mr Waterman said he hoped to break a world record at the event next year. Our "village hall" event a couple of weeks ago had double the attendance from last year - and many of them were young families with children in tow - and they got in free of charge. .
  7. Thanks to Google and Wikipedia . . . . An ornithopter is an aircraft that flies (or not) by flapping its wings. With me it was 25 years whilst working for Lloyds and to start with when I worked in the offices at the University. However it soon became clear that I was in a minority and so I left the jacket at home unless I was in a meeting that included the Uni Executive but even then many didn't bother. I recall the Head of the Law School wore a black t-shirt and black jeans every single day - presumably he changed into clean clothes every now and again. When we had a staff social after work, someone said it would be "smart casual" and one young lady in the office explained to me that it meant that I didn't have to wear my tie ! Talking of ties, I refuse to wear a black tie and white shirt at a funeral as I don't want to be mistaken for one of the undertakers. .
  8. Profit. After running the successful Derby show at the Assembly Rooms we were able to buy our clubroom from the local authority. We continued to run our exhibitions with the surplus going into a "building fund", moving from the Assembly Rooms to Moorways sports centre and then the Derby Roundhouse until that venue was closed due to covid. A surveyors report on our building (post-war prefab concrete framed building) said that it wasn't in danger of imminent collapse but had a limited life - even though every show made at least £2,500, we are still nowhere near the estimated sum of £200,000 we need !! .
  9. An amazing amount of detail in a small space and a prize-winner at the Gauge O Guild exhibition last month - well deserved and perhaps helped by the layout team handing out voting forms and pens !!😀 .
  10. By coincidence, it was the Mickleover Exhibition last weekend as well - over 500 visitors to our clubroom and the Community Centre which was the old Victorian School on the main road through the village. .
  11. Good Luck with that ! Photos below of a Coles crane at Elvaston Castle Steam Fair held near Derby in July
  12. One of our members has posted a video he took on Sunday. Viewing this on YouTube will also link to many other videos taken of our club layouts and his own personal models and layouts https://youtu.be/7CmmVnxj_yw Also viewing that again has provided a link to another video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tX1_b2lAW0 .
  13. Have a look at the products from EBMA shown in link below. No connection with them but I saw their display at a show recently. https://www.ebmahobby.co.uk/ .
  14. Almost right Richard - but you forgot about the extra day in February - so my diary says the 5th & 6th October - I hope that's correct as we have had 5000 flyers printed and gave out 500 of them at the weekend 😃😃 .
  15. One of that group is also a member of our club - and was also part of the organising team for the show. Obviously I can't give out information here but if you PM me with your contact details, I will pass that on to him so that he can contact you. Are you also aware that the NMRA will be in Derby 20-22nd October at the London Road Conference Centre. Freemo HO is mentioned on the layout page in the link below but I don't know if it will be the same group that came to our show. https://www.black-diamonds.org.uk/convention/ Thanks (from another Mike B !!) .
  16. Agreed - I see that Richard went to the other show in the morning with his video camera and came to us in the afternoon . . . . . .
  17. I visited "The Range" a few days ago and they had a poster in the Gents showing the shop opening times and so I thought " I know you're open because I'm standing here" - but at the bottom of the poster it had the slogan "If we don't sell it, you don't need it" - so since when did they start selling trains ?? .
  18. Another 220 adults through the door yesterday so with the children we can say that we had at least 600 visitors over the weekend which isn't bad for a "Village Hall" type of show with16 layouts and only one of those wasn't from our own club. The attendance was the best we have had since lockdown and shows that if you get the advertising right, you will attract both enthusiasts and a lot of newcomers who when asked said that it was their first visit. There were also several enquiries about club membership - with 72 on the books already, if we enrol many more it will be standing room only !! Many thanks to the exhibitors and traders, plus of course all the work that goes on behind the scenes, the staff in the tea rooms (they also had record sales) and of course a big thank you to our visitors. To see what you missed look at Richard's video above. Mike - on behalf of Mickleover (Derby) Model Railway Group. .
  19. Many thanks Richard - very much appreciated. Our attendance for the first day was 298 adults and a lot of children (not counted as they were all admitted without charge). This was almost double last year although that was rather low due to exception circumstances. Hoping for another good day today . . . . . . .
  20. Another great photo Steve. As I said yesterday, it's strange seeing the layout and the amount of detail in such a small space when previously it's been seen on a large PC monitor. Hope the Club has another successful day today as I think this will the first I have missed in about 40 years but for a change family comes first . . . . . . .
  21. Copied below from the BBC report - so it wasn't just the house sale . . . . . . . . . . " At the same time Mr Bardsley's business got into financial difficulty. He was forced to sell the property and his business folded within months. " .
  22. I have copied two quotes below from the reports of the Wakefield show last weekend - a 500 mile round trip with a big van and several staff - rather an expensive "disagreement" with no income. "Squires, they are not there, having gone home last night after a disagreement." "It was a shame that Squires weren't there, I had my shopping list prepared, but hey ho." .
  23. Same should apply to traders. A previous exhibition manager wouldn't invite back any traders who he thought had started to tidy their stand too early. At one of our swapmeets, most of the 15 or so traders had cleared their tables except for one who in the last 10 minutes sold more than he had for the rest of the day as a late visitor found he was the only one still trading. .
  24. until
Mickleover Model Railway Group Mickleover Community Centre Uttoxeter Road Mickleover Derby DE3 0DA Saturday 7th October 10.00am - 5.00pm Sunday 8th October 10.00am - 4.00pm Admission Adults £5 Children Free The exhibition will follow our tried and tested format which includes the clubroom being open displaying 3 permanently set up layouts and then around 12 more in the Community Centre and clubroom, along with 3 traders and the always popular club second hand table(s). For the past 50 years or so we have always used this exhibition to showcase the work of our own members, either on club layouts or their own. This year we should have two 7mm O gauge, five 4mm OO gauge, two 3.5mm HO gauge, three 4mm OO9 narrow gauge and three N gauge. Trade will be Andy Brewin from A2B Models of Matlock Bath, John Sammans second hand sales and Chris Canner with the Railway Bookshop. David Wright will be demonstrating building buildings which will include the famous "Crooked House" pub - this model was featured recently on BBC TV. Light refreshments will be available from The Old School Tearooms (part of the Community Centre). Parking at the Centre is rather limited although there is a supermarket car park nearby - but ensure that you check the signs for restrictions and make a note of the time you arrived. Don't blame us if you get caught 😠
