I think you may be correct on dates for the speedo and AWS. https://picasaweb.google.com/116839141471298057728/1334070Manston#5700899119282162114 This picture, from the same gallery, is of the Engine Record Card for 34070, and right down in the bottom right hand corner is the hand written note Speedometer gear fitted 3/60. Frustratingly somebody has also written AWS but no date or other info. I think though there is possible evidence that you are correct about the March '62 date being the relevant one for 34070 having AWS fitted however. The next picture in the gallery is of the rear of the Engine Record Card and I am of the opinion that the entry for March '62 appears to written in the same in colour as the AWS on the front. Not only that but the A and even more so the S look to be the same handwriting, can it be taken that they were written by the same person, at the same time, presumably March 1962. https://picasaweb.google.com/116839141471298057728/1334070Manston#5700899133080397778
  2. Which must presumably mean therefore that she never ran with AWS and first crest on a high sided tender, as modeled by Hornby.

  4. The parts listed in the 2002 Model Rail article are: CR112 pipes M2933 Buckeye A2603 Vestibule rubbing plate A1 chopped oleo buffers. I think they are variously from the Craftsman and A1 ranges but as the article is over 12 years old now I am not sure if they are all still available and/or still using the same reference codes but hopefully will be of some use to you. I have just remebered that the Spring 2013 edition of Model Rail also looked at the Class 91 in the Workbench section. They suggest the chopped buffers frm MG Sharp and Shawplan for the hoses. That article is probably the most comprehensive of all the articles in terms of detailing a 91, the only thing it doesn't cover is converting a Hornby model into a 91/1 with the additional bodyside grills.
  5. In regards to the bufferbeam layout Colin Marsden's 2007 edition of Traction Recognition has a labelled picture of the slab end of a 91 at the bottom of page 85. Assuming that the layout is the same at both ends, if you could get access to that book it may be of some use. Edit to add two more reference materials that might be of use. The October 2002 issue of Model Rail has a Materclass on the Class 89/91 engines and page 22 has some information on deatailing the Hornby model. Along similar lines, George Dent's "Detailing & Modifying Ready-to-Run Locomomotives in OO Gauge: Volume 1" has a section on detailing the class 91, page 106 being about the buffer beam. Both of these suggest manufacturers of parts to help.
  6. If memory seves me right 91131 holds the passenger carrying record (154.1mph), whilst 91110 holds the outright record (162mph) and carries a plaque to celebrate this.   7. Amazing livery, hopefully a photo opportunity will arise with all the WW1 locos, and 91110 in the Battle of Britain scheme, once they are all complete. I assume it was no coincidence that this particular loco was selected, seeing as its number contains "eleven eleven".

The only other option would be if you purchased the recently released Flying Scotsman liveried Train Pack (R3133) which contains the DVT, 82205, which is painted in the East Coast maroon scheme to match 91101. Hornby have not released the Mk4 DVT on its own, except when it was pretending to be a Mk3b DVT, for a long time and so the only way to buy one new has been to purchase a train pack.
  9. NINJA, the roundel and number on the roof are definetly meant to be there, although they were starting to fade in June last year.   10. It is just a Class 91 loco, Model Rail confirm as much in the discussion under one of the pictures on their Facebook page. There is an East Coast Class 91 train pack out this year, it will include the Class 91 and DVT in the Flying Scotsman maroon livery. Hope that helps.
  11. With apologies to anybody who has already read this on Model Rail's Facebook page, but here is my post there copy and pasted here with regards to minor livery issues. Lovely livery application - Hornby at their very best there. One minor point though, the nameplates appear to be in the incorrect positions. On the left handside the nameplate should start over the "S" of Lest and finish above the "O" of Forget whereas the pictured model has them over "E" and "F" respectively, in otherwords too far forward. See flickr image here http://goo.gl/TiVWu On the right handside the reverse appears to be the problem, in so far as the nameplate appears to be too far back on the loco. In this instance the nameplate should start just after the "F" of forget and finished just after the "R" of the lower text of Forget, instead of the starting at the "E" of We and finishing just before the "R" of Forget. See flickr image here: http://goo.gl/djfXO. The only other very minor detail with the livery is that the data panels on the rear of the loco are white backed. I do appreciate that the out of place nameplates may be a deliberate thing, due to the difference in the bodyside grills on the 91/1 models compared to the 91/0, which the Hornby model represents.
  12. If you are going anywhere near Faversham then The Hobby Shop is well worth a visit. Is where I get most of my purchases from, is well worth the hour plus train journey from Sandwich. Its only a small shop in physical size but is a bit on an Aladdin's cave inside with a wide range of different stuff stocked and with what I always found competitive pricing to match. I have been a customer of this, and their old shop in Canterbury, for about 15 years now so would happily recommend.
  13. Hi Ash, The grills would definetly be something that I would be interested in if you do get anywhere with them. As for the wi-fi dome, a few years ago I found these wooden bits in HobbyCraft - I think that they are intended for dolls houses or something similar but I reckon they would do the job just fine. I have got two different sizes as I was not sure which was the better fit when I was in the store so got both to cover my basis as they were only a couple of pounds each.   14. Hi Ash, Apologies for the delay in replying. I'm afriad I have yet to make a constructive start to the project due in main to the problem of the additional bodyside vents. I have two possible ideas but not really sold on either yet. My first idea is to use a second body and cut the grills out of that body and use them to make the additional grills on the modified model, problem being the extra grills are not all the same size. My second idea is similar, but instead only use the outer frame of the grills and replace all the vents with vertical etched grills from an A1 models detailing pack, there is a class 37 that looks like the etchings may be appropriate. The other issue which is delaying me is the pantograph, I had been hoping the Hurst ones would come back into stock but they have been out for a while. So I am trying to think of an idea for replacing the Hornby pantograph, still not really sure what to do there. In the mean time I have made a start on doing the DVT with the wifi dome instead, and will then move onto filling the windows on the Mk4 coaches to make them Mallard spec.

If it is any use to anybody I did a bit of research on the topic of the side skirts when PH Designs first released their kit as I am converting a Hornby 91 into a 91/1 as a bit of a backburner project. Although I do not have the paperwork with me here, as I recall the different side skirts (left and right hand sides) are actually more straight forward than it often can be the case. The first ten (91101-91110) locos sport one pattern of side skirt whilst the balance of the locos (91111 - 91132) which were built slightly later sport the revised version of the skirt. The main difference on the left hand side is the rear most column, which on 91101-91110 has the lower three grooves full length and the highest one slightly shorter and also the minor panel mark just above on the body side: http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/8280379429/ On 91111-91132 there is no panel in the bodywork and the top two horizontal grooves are the slightly shorter length: http://www.flickr.com/photos/penske666photography/8270224944/ On the right hand side of the loco the difference is in the middle column of grooves. On 91101-91110 the lower three horizontal grooves are the full width and again there is that panel in the body work just above: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lereddog/7650641196/ On locos 91111-91132 the panel in the body work is not there, and as on the left hand side only the lowest two horizontal grooves are the full length, the upper two being the much shorter length: http://www.flickr.com/photos/railphotosonline/5823940350/ The Hornby 91/0 as it comes has the horizontal grooves correct for the initial batch of locos (91101-91110) but without the bodyside panel markings. Whereas the PH Designs kit is essentially correct for locos xxx11 upwards. The only significant error (which is incorrect for all 31 locos if I recall correctly) is on the right hand side etch, where the top two horizontal grooves on the rear most column have part of the horizontal seperation at the rear missing (see the last two pics above) in real life - making a sort of squat but stretched [ shape. This however is probably easily sorted with a sharp blade. Hope that all makes some sense and is some use to anybody.
