  1. NUFC has signed a goal scorer. He hasn't scored that many but he cost a lot. Joe Linton or similar name. BBC sports correspondent thinks NUFC may sell him in 3 years for twice the money.

And now for something completely serious.

It has been a busy couple of days Upon the Hill.  That is in the interludes when I have not Speaking of the House of Fun a new plaque was unveiled today.  I wonder what Chrisf might make of it.  Prior to being unveiled it was poorly concealed behind curtains which many members of the public drew back to see what might be behind.  The reactions were mixed.  What ever the law there is a number of folk - mostly the senior generation if today was anything to go by - who still find such things unpalatable.  Two of our own staff team, both strict Christians of the Afro-Caribbean persuasion, have formally protested partially on the grounds of what it is (for them it is contrary to their devoutly-held personal beliefs)  but also because we have been told - and some long-serving staff have been told for 30 years - that we cannot have a memorial plaque on the station to the victims of the three-train disaster nor to the staff member who collapsed and died on duty last year.

I make no further comment.  It is what it is.  It is a blue plaque and, as they usually do, records a matter of historical fact.

Strange this, since their is a brass plaque on the wall at Brighton station to Rodney Cayer who was a guard and later a ticket inspector.

Considering the struggles of so many smaller clubs, many of which we have discussed here, the 'dilemma' faced by Gareth Bale in deciding whether to move to China for a wage of £1m a week is simply obscene...... It's not Bale's fault, someone is willing to pay him and that so why wouldn't you go if you were in his shoes, but it just lays out starkly the contrast between the 'haves' and 'have nots' in the game. My club nearly went to the wall only weeks ago for a relatively miniscule debt and was then sold for princely sum of £26,000........ Mr Bale probably makes that in an afternoon...... :O

I wonder how many number 161's with fried rice and crackers he could get for that?

Sad isn't it.   The largest fleet in the world that kept the oceans free, deterred a German navy twice and was slowly taken apart by economics and misguided governments.  At least Mrs Thatcher borrowed a liner; where is she now that you need her?

    She's been scrapped, lovely ship.:D

    White Hart Quay?

    Mike.

It does have a ring to it.

Killie Quay, Marnock Quay, Killie Cran Quay (see what I did there?) It'll come to me soon.

Good luck to NUFC with their new manager and half a team.

My son aged 8 (ish) decided to support NUFC and in particular Rob Lee, of whom I had not heard at that time.  He participated in a competition in a local sports shop and won 2 tickets to a home game against Forest.  We journeyed up from softy southern parts and he got photos & autographs before and after the game with some players and wor Jackie Charlton.  Forest goalie Dave Beasant spent ages after the match chatting with fans.  We met Rob Lee after the match.  Only 2 signatures he didn't get were Shearer and Psycho who were too busy to get away to play golf.  We had 2 seats right at the front halfway between the goal and the corner flag.

Remember which British club was the first to win the European Cup ?!!!!!!!

We won the FA cup as an amateur team but it won't get us anywhere today.

Celtic may monopolise the SP but playing quality teams consistently in the English Premier would be different.

Thank goodness, I thought the football season was never going to start (sorry BoD !)

On a more serious note, IMHO it is ridiculous that League Champions such as Celtic have to go through multiple qualifying rounds to reach the lucrative group stage; If UEFA want to make (even) more money for themselves and the so-called big clubs and leagues, so be it, but only non-League winners should have to negotiate qualifying.

    and Celtic aren't non league?

    I'll get my jacket

They're all batters now, just as they are all fielders and bowlers and umpires. The only thing left to sort out is Third Man.

It was interesting to hear the commentators during the Womens football World Cup describing Phil Neville as "a great man manager."

I guess woman womager just aint right! (Primarily because both have m a n in them)
