  1. Whether to accept or decline an offer can be a gamble. Usually, as you say, the items will eventually sell for a lot more, but I have been caught once when I declined an offer which I considered on the low side and then the item sold at auction for around half what I had been offered. It all depends on how many people want your item and how much they are willing to bid.
  2. Best to click on the "e-mail me if one becomes available" option. I pre-ordered, then cancelled, then when I tried to order again they were sold out so I took the e-mail me option. Later I found one from a retailer on pre-order, subject to immediate pay in full. So I have paid it long ago but not yet received. I'm expecting an e-mail from Accurascale once they have sorted out their stocks but I won't be responding to it as it looks like I have already secured my order by paying a retailer.
  3. I have been caught with this a few times. List an item and then eBay prompts you to add Missing details. So I go back to add the EAN number. To do so I enlarge the photo of the box label so I can read off and type in the EAN. Then eBay places the box label as now the main photo. I go back again for a further edit to re-instate the correct order of my photos and in the meantime someone has submitted a 99p starter bid which restricts my editing rights, and however much I edit the post to re-instate the intended main photo of the actual item, eBay will now continue to display the box label as the listing photo. I don't know why have set it this way, because when potential buyers only see a box label they might scroll on by, thus depressing the eventual sale price and accordingly depressing eBay's own commission also.
  4. Go to his "about" page and give him a thumbs down. This brings up a box which invites comment to eBay as to why you don't like the profile. I reported him as :- "Nothing on this page to alert purchasers that this guy is rude. He has bad form on forums for his attitude."
  5. DHL brought me something nice this morning. After the 37s were first announced at the end of 2019, 37 027 Loch Eil, 37 409 Lord Hinton and 37 423 went onto my wish list. 027 because I had worked in Oban for a time during the era of 37 haulage there and 409 and 423 because in more recent years, living nearer to Carlisle, I had travelled behind those to and from Whitehaven a few times. Initially I ordered only 409 and paid a deposit. Later in 2020 a doubt as to affordability arose and Accurascale were good enough to accept my request to cancel my order and refund my deposit. By the time I decided I would definitely go ahead with purchasing they were all sold out on pre-order at Accurascale, but I managed to source 409 and 423 from different retailers. With 409 and 423 paid in full some time ago I was now on the lookout for 027. Last week Accurascale had a few more listed on their website and I was successful in obtaining this one which arrived today. Already test run on my little layout with a pair of Bachmann Mark 1s and all OK and still to add the detailing. 423 has already been here for around two months now and next to arrive, hopefully soon, will be 409.
  6. Will be very interesting to learn if anyone has gone 100% Accurascale. I've sold quite a few modern Hornby and Bachmann items to fund my Accurascale addiction, but I've still got loads of vintage Triang, Hornby-Dublo and Wrenn which I have owned for many years and am unlikely to sell.
  7. The old coach at Nisbet station, seen rotting away into the vegetation last time I was there in October 2017. It was left behind in Nisbet goods yard after the Jedburgh branch closed in 1964. It may have already become a grounded body used for storage prior to that date. It became a feature in the garden of the old station house but has deteriorated in recent years. So far as I have been able to ascertain it was originally a seven compartment non-corridor coach. Probably now too far gone to be a worthwhile project for preservation.
  8. Just realised I have now hit the magic 100 items of Accurascale rolling stock delivered or on order, 93 wagons and 7 coaches (plus 3 x Class 37 locos) Wagons 5 x PTA 3 x PCV 7 x PCA 11 x MDV/MDW (of which 4 eagerly anticipated) 30 x PFA 1 x SR Banana eagerly anticipated 6 x HUO 3 x CDA 3 x HMA 6 x MHA 6 x JSA 4 x IIA 4 x HYA 2 x cutdown HYA 2 x FNA-D Coaches 1 x Siphon 1 x Mk 1 suburban eagerly anticipated 1 x Mk 2b eagerly anticipated 4 x Mk 2c eagerly anticipated Locos 1 x 37 423 Spirit of the Lakes 1 x 37 027 Loch Eil 1 x 37 409 Lord Hinton eagerly anticipated
  9. My Pack C pair arrived yesterday. Living within an hour's drive of Carlisle, I had bought four Bachmann FNAs when these were first released some years ago. I recently sold a pair to make way for my pair of Accurascale FNA-Ds. Having both types has allowed comparison. The Bachmann model was state of the art and received wide acclaim when first released but the new Accurascale models take detail many stages further. Accurascale enhancements over the older Bachmann which I have already spotted include the heavier diecast base, sprung buffers, rotating axle boxes, grill detail on the decking, side details including more lettering and of course the flashing tail light. 37423 Spirit of the Lakes took the FNA-Ds cautiously down my branch line this morning and if you have one minute and forty seconds to spare you can enjoy the ride from this short video. See if you can spot a member of the Accurascale Survey Team perched on the roof of a platelayer's hut on the left hand side as the train comes out of the first tunnel.
  10. Thanks, Darius, for this very informative review. I had just assumed batteries would be included with the FNAs as my Accurascale HYA and PTA wagons came complete with batteries. No problem though as the CR927 is very cheap to buy and I have ordered a pack of 10 on eBay. Perhaps one of the Accurascale crew can advise us whether the CR927 is also suitable for use in the HYA/IIA and PTA wagons.
  11. On his profile page, you can give Michael Hartley a thumbs down and there is space there for you to tell eBay your reason. Having been made to take down the listing under one of his accounts this guy had the cheek to relist on a different account in the hope none of us would spot it. If enough of us give him a negative rating with explanation from that page maybe eBay will take notice and close his accounts.
  12. Thankfully I have only ever been victim of one theft of model trains. Fifty years ago as a callow youth I allowed a club which I had recently joined to run some of my wagons on the layout which we were showing at an exhibition. My wagons had a personal identifier on the underside. When the show finished an older, respected member of the club who was a solicitor claimed the wagons and insisted he had bought them from a stall at the show, that a member of the public must have lifted them from the layout and traded them during the show. He refused to return the wagons to me. They were of low value, but one was a Hornby-Dublo grain wagon which my parents had given me when I was a child. I went to the police and was then barred from the club as a troublemaker. Many years later the same solicitor was struck off for stealing large amounts of money from his clients. After his major crimes received media publicity I spoke to one of the people who had originally ostracised me, who was apologetic, but explained that at the time this thief was a respected member of the club who was more likely to be believed over the allegations of a young newcomer.
  13. Yes, it seems to be working again. I decided to order a pair of FNA wagons, using my credits from the Mk2c coach order in part payment, and this time Paypal is allowing me to pay the balance by Pay in 3.
  14. Wow! I bought my first house in 1978 at age 27, three bedroomed semi with a sea view, for £16,000, with a £3,000 deposit and £13,000 mortgage. Now I'm in my seventies and retired and free from mortgage, I recently had my current house valued as part of the plan to sort out my affairs, and the valuation came up at £100,000. A lot depends on where your career ends when you retire, some of us live in cheaper areas of the British Isles, which does have its advantages for younger people moving into the area if only we could offer them local employment. My sympathies go to any young couple who would need to find £900,000 to be housed suitably near to their place of work.
  15. Does Pay in 3 not work for pre-orders? I checked out a pre-order for Mk2c coaches with PayPal Pay in 3. The first instalment showed up immediately on my PayPal account as pending but has now disappeared. I queried with Paypal as to why they have instead taken full payment immediately from my bank and they claim that the Pay in 3 was cancelled. It's annoying because I was intending to part fund these coaches from the sale of some Bachmann Mk2/2a coaches which have not yet been sold and has meant telling the wife that I now need to draw down money from our joint account into my railway fund.
  16. I won the auction, and as I expected eBay did not add an extra 20% onto my bid price. If the business seller is VAT registered presumably they have to account for VAT on the net proceeds of sale which they would receive from eBay. Not wishing to stray into politics but from my perspective, as a Scot with an Irish grandparent and a German wife, I feel betrayed and abandoned by the United Kingdom government. We were persuaded to stay with the UK in 2014 under the threat of losing the benefits of EU membership, then in 2016 our 62% remain vote in the brexit referendum was ignored, unlike Northern Ireland and Gibraltar who also voted to remain and have been permitted some mitigations of post-brexit restrictions.
  17. In the past I have never been charged extra VAT by eBay on a domestic purchase within UK. There is normally no VAT charged on second-hand purchases within UK. eBay would, up until now, only add VAT in the case of transactions under the Global Shipping Programme. The starting bid price was £12 and I was first bidder. My offer has been submitted on the basis that no additional VAT would be applied. Anyway, if my bid is successful later today, I should find out then whether any additional VAT has been added.
  18. I submitted a bid today on eBay.co.uk from my home location here in Scotland for some second hand Hornby Railroad wagons from a business seller whose location is shown as in England. eBay's e-mail acknowledgement of my bid shows "Current bid: £12.00: 20% VAT will apply". Is this a standard wording nowadays as I can't recall noticing this mention of VAT previously? Can I safely assume that since Scotland and England are still both part of the UK, that no additional VAT would be added by eBay to the final price?
  19. I salvaged this little building from a club layout which I helped to dismantle back in 1969. It has been on my current layout since I constructed the layout in 1989. There are some plastic bits, windows, doors, gutters etc, but the basic structure appears to be a very thin balsa wood rather than card.
  20. eBay e-mailed me that an offer had been received for an item which I had listed for sale on Buy-it-Now. By the time I opened the item page I found the offer had already been retracted, just 4 minutes and 37 seconds after it had been submitted. When I am buying, I am always happy if I do receive an instant or quick acceptance or counter offer, but come on, some buyers need to learn more patience, can't expect every seller to be monitoring eBay for offers 24/7.
  21. Agreed. Today I received eBay feedback for one of the items which is still showing on Royal Mail website as not yet delivered.
  22. I also had a successful run with Royal Mail other than some delays and one lost parcel during the postal strikes. Purchases and sales usually delivered within two or three working days. I am a bit concerned today though that things could be going wrong again. An eBay sale posted second class recorded delivery to Devon 8 days ago still has not been delivered to the buyer and also one sent to Somerset 6 days ago.
  23. When the heritage centre tracks were laid it was a stated intention at the time that this would be done to Network Rail standards, ready for main line use if/when the southern section of the Waverley line would be re-instated. However the heritage centre track is sixty foot panels, recovered when the Settle-Carlisle line was re-laid with continuous welded rail, so would need re-placing. There have also been other proposals which would see a new build route south of Hawick which would bypass Whitrope. There is currently a Borderlands Growth Deal in place, involving the Westminster and Scottish governments along with Northumbria and Cumbria County Councils, Carlisle City Council, Scottish Borders Council and Dumfries & Galloway Council and I understand that £15 million of that funding deal has been earmarked for a feasability study re the route between Tweedbank and Carlisle.
