Having recently become severely disabled, I will be using Laser Cut baseboards for all future layouts. Mind you it was never advisable to look too closely at the baseboards that I have made. On the subject of needing to get at all sides for scenic work, I believe Chris Nevard makes a Foam Board sub baseboard that he works on before placing it into the main baseboard box. All the suppliers of Laser Cut baseboards that I have looked at do a custom option, so you could specify a top that came out enough to light the entire layout if you went that route. Quite frankly, with the extremely high quality of Rob's layouts, I never look at the baseboards much anyway. For the record I think Rob's whole baseboards look great and I would be proud if I had made them.

Hi RailWest, thanks for the advice. Would I need just the one to protect both sidings and should it/they be two bladed or could I get away with a single bladed one? Alternatively, as I don't have much length to play with, could I use a double slip, instead of the left hand point, to perform the same function?

Hi all, I am hoping to make a very small micro layout, I have recently become disabled and can't lift much weight. I would still like to have signals on the layout though. I intend to set it in the present time as a preserved line. Because the layout will only be 1102mm long (rough plan below) and I would like to run two coach trains, I will have to have the loco sitting over the point on the main running line. I would also like to have one of the Dapol bracket signals, at the position marked signal, just because I like the look of them. I guess I might need a signal to allow a passenger train to pass the point, but would that be out of sight to the left or would it be on the platform? Is it possible to do what I want?

I'd you are using 'Normal Ply', I have in the past used 'beams' made by cutting narrow lengths of ply and sandwiching pieces of 2x1 in between a la Barry Norman of Trebetherrick fame, and fixing them to the underside or the baseboard tops to make sure the track bed doesn't sag or dip.

I would get a structural surveyor to comment, there are several who are members on here. My layman's opinion would be that it is tying the walls together and so therefore is structural, again my non professional opinion would be that putting anything lower down may not help. But I can't emphasize enough, get it looked at by a professional, taking it out yourself would probably invalidate your building's insurance as well.

Looking at the photo I would think the typeface is Gill Sans, definitely for the numbers and possibly for the letters as well. If it was sign written, then the sign writer may have altered the letter forms to fit the available space (condensed in modern speak). I often reduced the width of letters in some words to get a whole word to fit into a column width when I was producing magazines or books, not normally noticed by the readers. I also hate hyphenated words, I was taught to never hyphenate a name or proper noun!

If you select all in Excel and then custom sort you will keep the data correctly aligned.

If you use a spreadsheet, Excel, Numbers etc you can easily insert new categories/features such as RTR/Kit or Name for POW Wagons etc. I was surprised how many such headings I wanted in the end. I also have Box Name and Location and have numbered each storage box and know it's location in my house - saves a lot of time trying to find a pack of couplings for instance.
