  1. RMweb is now, for all intents and purposes, unusable.

RMweb works pretty well on a desktop computer, but I've found that it's painfully slow on a tablet unless you request the desktop site be served. Are the problems due to tablet formatting code?

      The Stationmaster

Seems to work perfectly well on the Mac but at times it is very slow although that does seem to vary considerably according to which part of the forum you are looking at - layout topics going really fast, r-t-r threads creeping along.   I wonder if that sort of thing tells a story?

I have kept away for a while hoping things would get better. Today I have had topic pages load in 2 seconds while a custom activity stream took 39 seconds. Perhaps the delays will let me post better things; there is plenty of time to ponder what to write.

  2. What's the point of the Mitch Martinez video? It doesn't appear to be advertising anything of relevance. And it has no audio.

It's weird. I just don't see the point of it. It's just like the moving wallpaper in the doctor's surgery, enough to distract, but not enough to entertain.

Edit: now the audio's working. Sometimes.

On further investigation, I'm beginning to wonder whether this video is the cause of some 'unexpected behaviours' that I'm experiencing. Specifically, posting replies seems to result in a 'hang' whereby the post goes through, but the screen doesn't refresh. Seen on both iOS (which doesn't show the video, although it's presumably still downloaded) and MacOS (which does).

@AY Mod, is this a known issue? The screen hanging on post, I mean.

I've not seen that specifically but it's reasonable to assume it's a symptom of the ad-loading.

  3. If you’d asked me yesterday what my favourite Christmas film was, I’d have said it was either Alistair Sim’s Scrooge (1951) or It’s a Wonderful Life.

Last night, I watched Klaus with my eldest daughter.

Now, it’s a three way tie.

Die hard, best ever Christmas film.

Die Hard is a great film set at Christmas.

  4. My eldest daughter bought one of those star projectors. Looking up at the ceiling she remarked “it’s just like going to see the northern lights, only cheaper!”

    And warmer.

  5. Q: what's the difference between .jpg and .JPG?

    A: none

  7. Watching Terror By Night, in which Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes solves murder and jewel theft on the London-Edinburgh express, on seeing the 'external shots' all I could think was "train set curves".

  8. **** BA

They cancelled a flight that my wife had booked, and ‘helpfully’ automatically rebooked her on a flight a week later. It seems that they’re bait and switching.

Have you tried getting a refund from these clowns? :mad_mini:

Your refund will be in the denomination of unicorn droppings.

Easier than getting a refund from Norwegian or Ryan air.

Is this a medical advance or retreat?

I turned 50 recently and can assure you all that I still have no more sense than when I was 20!

Its not the being a parent of a baby at 50 that's an issue, its being the parent of a stroppy teenager at 65 that would concern me.

I killed many off by forgetting to feed them - then had to hatch a new one to keep my son happy.

It was a relief when my daughters grew out of it. Come to think of it, it was during that time when my youngest first showed signs that she’s not cut out for motherhood.

Yes, there have been some quite amusing clips released of the Queen making Zoom calls, and clearly enjoying it.

It appears that, despite her move to IT and Zoom, Betty will still nip down to the post office should you wish:

  15. My wife has our youngest daughter shovelling the drive of snow. Told her it's her homeschooling PE!

  16. Gah! Damned automatic door opens every time it detects movement. Every bloody time I shift my leg. Oh for the days of less clever.

The noise from the things can be irritating enough.

However, at this time of year, a constant barrage of Arctic blasts can be most unwelcome.

  17. What’s wrong with posting rants/praise for online retailers in the Model Shop Guide, rather than the Products & Trade Area subforums?

Can we keep the Products & Trade Area to discussion of products (and whatever ‘trade’ means beyond retail)?

  18. POPPY APPEAL

Due to current circumstances, the British Legion poppy appeal is having difficulty this year, as it's not always possible to have the normal stands and personal collections. So keep an eye out (SWMBO ran into one stand at Cobham Services en route to Heathrow), or think of alternative ways to donate. My youngest daughter's school in Dover is selling metal poppy badges, for example.

    1. Hroth

      Hroth

I got a metal lapel badge when they first issued them, and rather than "buy" another each year, I've always dropped my usual donation into a collecting box in my local supermarket. This year, both the local Tesco and Morrisons had collecting tables so given the circumstances, I doubled up my contribution.

      Wear your poppy with pride!

  19. RIP Sir Sean Connery.

He could play anyone, or anything, as long as it had a Scottish accent. American-Irish cop, English King, Russian submariner; you name it, he scottishified it.

  20. The COVID dividend...
