  1. The difference is that while 'rivet counter', 'kettle', and 'oil can' can only be derogatory, or at least condescending, I really don't think that's the case for 'modern image'. It's just simply a not very descriptive term.
  2. Deep joy, I've finally sourced etched smoke deflectors for a Schools class

  3. And in those terms it means nothing, which was my point really. From a relative perspective it might mean something, but in absolute terms it would mean little.
  4. Strange. I was 4 in 1968, and steam trains do do it for me. And for my wife and, considerably younger, daughters. It's something to do with the smell and cinders. In fact, when we travel between Tenterden and Bodiam on the K&ESR we deliberately time things to avoid the diesel if at all possible. And in 10 years' time? The image has changed!
  5. The problem with vague descriptive words like 'contemporary' is that they lose their relevance. What is contemporary now no longer is in 10-20 years' time. As others have mentioned, epochs (or eras as Bachmann refers) may be more useful as they may be defined by a range of years.

  9. I think this music might be a better choice: http://trumpton3.homestead.com/Audio/cambw_opening.mp3
  10. Hmmmz, I wonder if their LT Pannier from Bachmann is the same as the one that I got split out of a Midnight metropolitan set? I have no real use for it...I just like Panniers.
  11. Hi Bob, thanks, that pretty much answers my question!

    EBay madness

Unfortunately a little overscale for OO or I could find them a place working on my layout.
  13. Hi Bob, I'm thinking of getting the Lenz system to replace my DC Gaugemaster (I also have a Hornby Select, but the less said of that the better!) I was considering the Lenz StartSET100 (LZV100+LH100) since that's cheaper than buying the two components separately. But would you say that the LH100 is pretty much redundant? In which case, I'd be better off getting the LZV100 (or holding out for the LZV200) and putting Touchcab on my iPhone.
  14. Unfortunately the DVD is now sold out (at Activity Media) and is only available as pay-per-view video-on-demand, which is a bit of a rip-off IMO.
  15. Putting another shout out (in the right place this time) for a 4mm Lord Nelson class. Maunsell green would be the icing on the cake!
  16. Have you tried the Humbrol weathering powders? Not sure whether (haha!) to go for them or other brands. Either way, I'd likely have to order over t'internet. The watered ink trick looks like it might be useful for making coaches look 'less moulded'. (I was thinking a light wash applied to doors and then wiped off, just leaving a little shadow).
  17. Well, I think this answers that little question! http://www.minicrafttools.com/
  18. You can still get hold of Minicraft on t'interwebz. But how does Proxxon compare? IIRC I saw these in my local DIY store.

    Hornby Star Class

I agree that the roof of the 2-BIL could be better, personally the bigger disappointment is the moulded door handles. They compare poorly against the recent Maunsell coaches.

    Hornby Star Class

"design clever" is simply a euphemism for 'build cheaper'

Newbie Q!: is there any reason to prefer the Alan Gibson (terrible website, awful PDF catalogue) to the Ultrascale versions (waaaaaaay better site, with photos)?
  22. If RMW allowed more than one feedback rating on a post you'd have received a and too!
  23. So impressive, it makes me want to cry over my own inadequacies. A friend of mine, who used to live in Northumbria, and I were on a business trip to Canada, and we latched on to a tour of a forest (or something that I can't remember). As the tour guide pointed out that the trees were almost a thousand years old, Mike turned to me a grinned "oh, so almost as old as Whitby Abbey then!"
  24. This is really helpful, thank you. I had considered plywood, but am concerned about splintering. Do you finish off your baseboard in such a way as to avoid this?
