I don't have much experience of the Reading-Birmingham section but would add to that the Birmingham-Derby-Sheffield-Leeds part of the XC route.  The scrums and bun fights over that section (seemingly almost any time of day) puts me off travelling from York to Birmingham, especially as there aren't so many of the "faster" ones via Doncaster any more (roughly two hourly, formerly hourly).  In contrast if I happen to go north from York on one they are usually much more comfortable.  Although I rarely do as I (back on topic!) much prefer an LNER Azuma if doing that kind of journey.

Which is not helped by the provision of single 4 car 220 units on Birmingham- NE & Scottish services via Leeds.A return Burton ( yes I’m the one who reserves that seat ! ) to Newcastle journey over last weekend produced such in each direction. The more direct services via Doncaster don’t usually stop at Burton. On Monday, the 10:35 Reading service from Newcastle stopped as follows: Durham,Darlington,York,Doncaster,Sheffield,Derby,Birmingham ( 4 car)

    The following 10 : 40 ex Glasgow-Plymouth ( 4 car )  served same to York,then Leeds,Wakefield ,Sheffield,Chesterfield

Derby,Burton & New Street. And I wholeheartedly agree re: the nuisance of football fans on these XC services. Some time ago,we experienced one service which its driver flatly refused to take onwards from Derby due to such from a group of Wolves fans.We transferred to an alternative Nottingham- Birmingham service, leaving the Voyager at platform with two BT police officers on board attempting to sort it out. It was Plymouth bound.

    Morning all.
just received my RTC Coach Pack finally and note that there is no limited edition certificate in the pack. I seem to remember others having them and others not. A small part but none the less an important one. Ive sent AS a message to ask what is happening regarding these.

also, can anyone let me know if they have stopped putting these boxes in the protective clear cover (slide on plastic sleeve) as mine doesnt seem to have one nor do i know if they should have or are simply just the box.

small points in the great scheme of things but id appreciate if some of you nice folks could let me know.

    thankyou.

    regards

    Mick

Indeed no protective plastic sleeve provided,There wasn’t with the Siphon G. No need ….they are well packed .
My blue/grey InterCity ones arrived this pm.btw.& are currently on the tabletop. I particularly appreciate the lighting which will stay on even for a short while when brought to a stop on DC. A nicely turned out product once more.I will be amazed if there are disappointments.

  3. Reading these posts,I’m glad ( yes, even that ) that my intercity experiences are these days still with the much reviled Voyagers …..recently between Bristol TM in the west and Newcastle in the north.Yes they’re cramped & uncomfortable & what luggage I choose to bring with me is stowed by the courtesy & good nature of any kind soul sitting next to me. They have been in service now for 20 + years . They can and do make up time….though there is much “ recovery “ allowed in XC schedules it has to be said. They employ a good and long suffering resource of train crew.

Is it viewable anywhere ? I know that's playing into his game, but for me it's likely to be the first and last time I watch his content . . .

He’s flirting with court action.  Virulently nasty. A disgrace.

  5. The thing is that this is probably the best GW  rtr coaching stock made at this particular moment in time,so there is an overwhelming urge to knee jerk at the first available opportunity before they disappear and buy something that may not be quite your “period” ( if indeed there is or was such a thing ) .Decisons, decisions !

Yesterday, Sunday 25th. February, 2024 the TfW 'Metro' took another step forward.

    .

Cl.231 unit(s) eg 231009 were tried out as far as Treherbert - the Rhondda Fawr line is due to reopen tomorrow, but initially operated by existing Cl.150/2 'Sprinter' units and the OHLE has yet to be energised.

    .

Cl.756 tri-mode units were tried out in the evening along the 'City Line' for the first time since last Autumn.

    .

A large number of the Cl.756 units are 'stored' at the  Barry Depot ( formerly used by the Barry Tourist Railway ).

    .

On Sundays, GBRf Cl.66s have been working from Cardiff Tidal to Treherbert and back, on route learning jobs.

    .

Next weekend Cardiff Queen Street and the Cardiff Bay branch ( Bute Road to those of my age ) will close completely from Friday to Monday to allow improvement work to be undertaken.

    .

Several PW trains ( nowadays called 'infrastructure' apparently ) are scheduled in connection with the works.

    .

As a result Treherbert, Merthyr & Aberdare workings will be diverted off the Radyr - Queen St. - Cardiff Central axis and onto the City Line, all will be non-stop on the City Line, with no service at all calling at  Danescourt, Fairwater, Waungron Park and Ninian Park.

    .

City Line passengers can use their rail tickets on Cardiff Bus services.

    .

There is still one Cl.398 'Tram Train' set waiting to be delivered from Asfordby ?  to Taffs Well using the Cl.20s as described above.

Well it seems they managed to stick to schedule which is truly great news for all in the Rhondda even if there is still much to be done. I’ve just taken a trip down memory lane with a YouTube video from Mike Wilcock,so thanks for that. Much water has passed under the bridge since 56XX & a collection of Colletts/Hawksworths….doors slamming & passengers hurrying up the platform for connections to Merthyr  to the cries of “ Rhondda Valley train “ or to the other bay for the Ynysybwl auto with is wood slatted sides .

But at Ponty station the celebration is muted for me by the partially third world state of a building and platforms which were once the crowning jewels of TVR architecture. Much of the station is unused and is in a state of weed infested neglect . And this is to host a state of the art rapid transit system ? The WAG/TFW do need to invest some TLC here….or are they perhaps hindered by a listed building status ?

Another big scoop for you all is that the new build Grange 6880 Betton Grange is to star at the SVR Spring Gala. The SVR are reporting strong ticket sales.

The very best of all GW locos. And a particularly Cornish ( 83 G ) one too. Something to celebrate.

Talking of Halls and did anyone else see that the owners of 4920 Dumbleton Hall had been sold to Warner's Bros to use in Harry Potter World Tokyo. The last time I saw her was in a right state at Buckfastleigh, so they've done well to get the million pounds reported.

Just looked at my Bachmann 4920 resplendent in her G # W post war green. I imagine the Tokyo bound loco will receive a makeover and renaming as “Dumbledore Hall” .

  9. See you there as another ( not quite as ) local. One attraction of Statfold for me is the Burton & Ashby Light Railway tramcar which is an active resident there & will be hosting rides. My house is built on top of what was originally a cutting carrying its tracks. It’s now a busy main road.

I have to agree with you about GETS . Apart from the hassle of finding my way off the M1 ( a rail strike day )

I found the event far too cramped and crowded for my comfort.

One thing perhaps should be emphasised and that is Tamworth’s accessibility by rail from all four corners of the UK. The WCML is served by an hourly LNWR Euston-Crewe service and XC services from anywhere between West,North East & Scotland. Complementary vintage bus from station to Statfold which is in a blissfully quiet countryside

I personally don't see the clash with GETS as an issue. I've been once and don't think I'd bother going again. I can play the sardine game on my train trips to and from Birmingham or on the London Underground.

The two events seem completely different and I think will attract different audiences. The Statfold event is certainly in my diary. I just hope they start beefing up the capacity of the catering to cope with the visitor numbers.

Being only 5 miles down the road I'd happily offer my cameo layout for a show in 2025.

Fair enough, they did start it.... 😬

And boy,did we finish it.Just reflecting…as a war baby….on what happened to Plymouth in rebuilding post war and comparing it with the destruction of a Dresden whose Frauenkirche has famously chosen to make  connections with Coventry Cathedral  ( I have visited both) and which city has chosen to rebuild itself somewhat differently. As to the bomb……well then, have a fishie on a little dishing, when the boat comes in .
