Arriva are going to be prosecuting people for fare dodging whether they have made every effort to purchase a ticket prior to travelling or not. If the ticket office is closed, and the ticket machine on the platform is not working, then it will be a case of either a fine or jail. We all should purchase our tickets prior to travelling, but if we genuinely cannot, then surely other ways should be found other than prosecution.

Not true. There either has to be "intent to avoid payment" (Railways Act offence) or an intent to travel without a ticket where facilities existed to buy one before travel (Byelaw offence). If the booking office is shut and the machine isn't working there were no facilities so you don't get prosecuted, it's the first thing they check. is saddened that he won't be having G & Ts afloat this eveningt whilst watching the Red Arrows at Dartmouth Regatta. After that awful crash last week 'nanny' has decreed that they can only make two passes along the river instead of the usual spectacular show.
