  1. I went to this show for the first time today. I don't normally go to one-day shows as most are not up to much but this was a very good show, and was a proper model railway exhibition rather than the glorified toy train show that some events can be.
  2. I'm still working my way through my copy. It's a very good book and my coaching stock group even receives a plug in the introduction. I particularly like the Bristolian shot showing chocolate and cream Mark 1 stock with B4 bogies.
  3. Welcome to the world of virtual meetings, which have been a big part of my life since March 2020, and are likely to continue being so!. At first, I misread the first line as indicating that Chris Mead was the Overlord.

  6. I thought the brakes were different so Peppercorn pacifics (and possibly Thompson too) did not swap tenders with other types in normal service.
  7. There have been several different route 60s. You can see the history on this site: https://www.londonbuses.co.uk/menus/rl001-100.html The first one disappeared in the massive cuts of 1958. The second one served Waterloo but was withdrawn in 1968. The present-day 60 began on 4 September 1982, which is a date more commonly associated with massive cuts to London's bus services when about one eighth of the schedule disappeared overnight and mass withdrawals of Routemasters began. So, there was no 60 for the whole of the 1970s.

  12. I suspect the latter and that the same applied on other regions too. There is a BTF film about carriage cleaners which shows a right-facing roundel on a maroon Mark 1.
  13. According to the Bank of England inflation calculator, £10 in 1968 equates to £177.36 in 2020 and it would be a bit more than that now.

Clumber appears on Retford in this video: https://youtu.be/zeSVolvqK_4 This was a test of the second boat train set (behind the Britannia) with Clumber passing on the existing boat train (although the carriages have been shuffled around between these and other trains). Yesterday, whilst I was visiting, Sandra and I ran the full sequence, including the boat train in both directions.
  15. Blue/grey 117s were on sale on stands at GETS at the weekend, so some are still around it seems. I assume they were not the sound ones as the price I saw was £260.

  17. From Summer 1961 Paddington Station Workings, although the unit in the image is showing 2M60 rather than 2M10 but WTT shows it as 2M60:
  18. The TT one is all black and white, mostly green era with some blue, white/blue and blue/grey and one Network SouthEast. Covers all the main types including the BUT 4-wheelers but not railbuses. There are some rare shots, such as a makeshift 3-car Derby Heavyweight (later class 114) and an early Swindon Inter-City unit at Wick when they were tested on the Far North lines in the early 1970s. Some appear to be BR official shots but most are not and I don't think I have seen the vast majority of the images previously. The front cover shot is also interesting because it's uncommon to see photos of Pressed Steel 117s on the GW&GC Joint. I suspect the service shown leaving High Wycombe is a legacy of the fact that the original route was GWR via Bourne End to Aylesbury.
  19. The Transport Treasury DMU book is very good and well worth having if you are into DMUs.
  20. There was a late change to the cover and title of the Irwell Press DMU book, which is almost all colour. I haven't seen it yet as my author's copies have not yet arrived. It was written almost three years ago but held up by various events. Please note that it only covers the diesel mechanical and diesel hydraulic classes from Derby Lightweights through to Swindon Class 123 Inter-City units, with a brief mention of the GWR diesel cars. It does not cover DEMUs but perhaps someone will cover them in future (not me). There are very few images from after the blue/grey era. Most photos are from my collection but some are by Tony Wright, to whom I am grateful for having been given access to his slides.

  22. But in reality not all regions changed at the same time. The LMR started outshopping stock in maroon a bit earlier in 1956 going by contemporary reports, which is perhaps not surprising as it was essentially the old LMS livery with simpler lining. The first all-maroon sets on the Eastern were the Talisman sets when that service launched in September 1956. York and Doncaster works were reported as still using crimson and cream in the summer of 1956. I have seen it suggested that the Eastern considered a return to mock teak but have not seen any official documentation to that effect. Mark 1 FOs E3076-80 and BSOs up to E9315 were crimson and cream when new in 1956.
  23. I suspect the one turned out in the spring of 1956 will have been crimson and cream when new. Carriages for the Eastern didn't appear in maroon until later in the year, or so it appears from photos and contemporary reports. End steps were disappearing by the early 1960s, especially on LMR carriages, and this was before maroon ends came in circa 1964/5. I haven't seen a blue/grey Hornby BCK and have no interest in acquiring one as I have plenty of Bachmann ones, but if it's like their other blue/grey Mark 1s, the livery rendition will be terrible, with the blue far too dark and the grey more of a milky white colour.
  24. That was for internal documents such as carriage workings and came from the now-defunct BRB Residuary. They did say that existing permissions would continue. All the stuff I have made available has been for free.
  25. Yes, I believe the trailers would only go together one way round. It was also the case with the pre-war express stock although in that case the corridors were always on the same side. The Portsmouth/Bognor trains did not generally call at any station between Victoria and Dorking except Sutton. I don't recall them ever calling at either Mitcham Junction or Epsom. Dorking and Sutton had (and probably still have) 12-car platforms. The oddity as noted above was the 17.00 or thereabouts to Littlehampton, which was 8-car and called at Sutton, Boxhill & Westhumble and all stations south thereof. In the timetables I looked at from c1970, the peak-hour London Bridge trains were running via East Croydon but that may not have been the case in earlier years. May 1978 was when the regular service switched to the Gatwick route, except a few peak-hour trains which remained via Sutton until May 1984 and some Saturday trains, possibly whilst the engineering works were going on north of East Croydon in the early 1980s.
