    Firstly on traders. For me, they are the main reason I visit many shows, particularly the likes of Railex and ExpoEM. The trade support for these shows is fantastic and it's so good to be able to talk to the proprietor and pick up small bits without paying postage. I have no knowledge of the charging structure for shows, but it strikes me that specialists should get a lower rate than the box shifters (if not free). I'll pay a lot more for entrance to a show with a couple of specialist retailers than one with just a lot of box shifters (who will probably be pricier than the big online boys anyway).


    Postage is my other point. I really hate paying postage as it's just a dead cost. I don't think traders generally rip their punters off for postage, although the same can't necessarily be said for the Royal Mail, whose prices just seem to go up and up. I'd much rather that money is put into show admission than waste it on postage. I have a rule that I never pay more than 10% for postage. If it's going to cost me more than that, I wait until I've got a bigger order or can visit a show. I've even been known to buy lots of stuff that I don't really need just to get over the free postage threshold - don't tell my wife!



    I agree with all of your points especially this one. I would also suggest looking back at Spanish flu. It took a couple of years of uncertainty after it and then there was the roaring twenties, which for many years has been attributed to coming out of Ww1 but because of COVID has been reassessed as more of a response to the enforced social distancing imposed. Therefore exhibitions could be few and quieter for 2021/2022 but by 2023 will be running again. For me the change will be in what is there. More diesel and electric layouts, less br steam as memories of those prepared to exhibit are from those era.

  2. The last interior has been built.


    it is much narrower than the Others because of the way the d&s body goes together. If the roof had been made to come off then it could have been wider. However, then I would be chasing the gap between ends and roof. 
    you pays your money and you take your choices.

    Now to paint and fit with a bunch of paintings and mirrors. I am drawing the line at luggage racks

  3. If you dig a bit it is amazing how many were sighted on the GCLE. There is a photo of Edward Thompson at Nottingham Victoria in lner livery en route to marylebone for naming. If you want to change the numbers but not the name.

    I'm still looking for pics of Stanier catering cars in BR maroon, I have some in crimson/cream.

    Actually there may be many photos with them in, but well down the train with the focus being on the engine.

    Most drawings miss out the under frame detail and bogie detail which complicates building models.

    Good to know, though part of me feels if I am going to put them in I should have a go at making some as buying them seems a bit like cheating on the bar as it is all off cuts of plastic so far. Have I got any clear sprue to cut a glass or two from?

  6. When ours conked out I replaced it with a push along mower. No engine to go wrong, and no noise, plus exercise. A good choice though my wife thought I was barmy. She now admits it cuts the grass better. In fairness we have a postage stamp to cut. I doubt it is a solution for those who have bigger gardens.

    The white panels question is down to a couple of drawings in Jenkinsons tome "British Railway Carriages of the 20th Century" volume 1, figure 33 on page 67, and figure 44 on page 168.  They do both refer to the Luggage Composite, and assuming you have the book will require a magnifying glass to view the details. 

    Thank you.  I have the book so will look into it, though red or ruddy brown through a window unlit might be difficult to tell apart.

    The MS&LR had blue for Firsts and red for Thirds.  I always seem to think that should be the colour as that was/is the colour of First and Third, although that is not universal anymore. 


    I got on a train and all the seats in the coach were blue, and my seat was very roomy.  I eventually realised that I was not in a First and on another journey realised that the seat I had sat in was for the disabled, if they were any, which is why there was more room.

    this stirs up the water a bit. If there was a change I wonder if it came about when Robinson took over.

  8. Slowly moving forward. I decided to cut windows from a single sheet. 

    That after putting in the compartments on the wrong side of the carriage. There was me thinking I had been so meticulous with it. I must delve into colours. Seats blue first red third ( I think) corridors dark wood and inside the compartments the same, but Manxman has me thinking I need to check the white upper panels. Just on firsts?

    one down in a week six to go. So done by the end of may?

    Yes, the basic interior is 7mm strip along the bottom and bench ends, with 3mm (First class) and 2mm (Third class) strips for the internal window pillars, topped off with 1.5mm 'L' angle.  I did cheat with the faux-BTK, with that having the First class spacing in the compartments, those Thirds actually have the thicker pillars.


    Did you get to the bottom of why certain ones were derailing?

    Thanks for the numbers. I have the exact figures for each part of the compartment and they are within a smidge of what you are quoting. The derailing was for different reasons. A back to back had slipped/ bogie not quite squared. One was catching on the brake cylinder and one on the underframe/ solebars. I think they are all addresses now.

    This has given me an idea. I was going to cut out the windows but you seem to be doing it by using different pieces to make the down struts around the windows. 
    no interiors yet in mine, but glazing here for their portraits.

  11. I got the chance to take the carriages for a road test. I spent the time trying to tweak them to improve running so did not take out a camera. Three ran fine, the others needed more serious adjustments which I have looked to do.

    I have started on the interiors which look like a confusing set of lines.


    these are the floors with marks for where the internal walls go. 
    here is hoping it all works out. Not looking forward to cutting out all the compartment windows. Flash backs to the Barnums.
