Wait, you were actually using a mobile ‘phone!
did I miss the three wise men coming from the east? That happened last time you turned the device on.

Gorgeous! What a pretty loco that is.
If etches become available in 4 and/or7mm, I will very happily have one of each Mike.
Ditto for 4mm.

Flooding the cream is sometimes easier than trying to paint in the thin brown lines second. If you catch my drift.

Try dean gwr buffers they seemed to have more of the look when I had a go at my 4 Barnums.

Not sure on ger but gcr only had vents over the smoking compartments on its four wheelers, certainly to begin with. That might also have been the case with others.
having said that the Parker London extension stock had more things I needed to attach to the roof than I could almost fit on!

These needed finishing as the kids only got so far with the builds and so have distracted from proper modeling. F22 F35 and a Tie fighter.
bit of fun tracking down bits which they had cut out and snapped in half or fitted incorrectly.

I have got as far as I can get with this here.
the clearstory section is resting on the cross supports for the sides and so is too low. It can travel like that to keep it protected. Leaves two roofs and vents to sort. Then painted into varnished wood livery.

What a restrained reply. You picked your words very carefully.
there is one exception. 2mm. It seems to be the only way to get loads of power. Motor in the tender with power through a drive shaft to the coupled wheels on the loco.richard

Re the Roof .
Worsley works sell a etched Brass Clerestory Roof for a NER Version for £20 , if any use to you, sizing would be similar. I can measure mine if needed.
That’s kind, but I just need the flat sections so two pieces of brass sheet I can roll/ form will work. Should be cheaper than the etch, as nicely done as that most likely would be.

Turns out in a fit of optimism I went for it.
both on and no solder spread everywhere. That does not often happen.

I like your rendition of the silver jubilee in the last photo. Just need a photo of the A4 on the front.
glad to hear your health is improving.

Almost as far as I can get it here.
Above the door it should have 5 horizontal strips to represent the ventilator, it has three etched into the side of the carriage to give a key. Leave it like this or risk doing a botched job to get it to look correct with the limited tools I have brought?
need to fold/ straighten the two clearstory sides and then need to wait to access brass to make both parts of the roof.

Very realistically weathered roof. Any secret to achieving it?

I would fancy my chances at that type with some brass wire and either a couple of brass split pins or even turned handrail pillars.
That is exactly how I did the ones for my 4 Barnums. Built using a little jig I made. Well I needed 32 of them. I chickened out of doing an ornate set.

For example, when the detailed scenic work on my own layout starts to take proper shape, I see myself having to pay out a relatively substantial sum for some form of 'static grass applicator'. After a few hours of use it will be put to one side and probably never be used again. I do hope the result will be worth it ...
Borrow it.
Our club has looked at getting these sort of items which we can share around. We have not progressed with the idea, but what we do do is share our own equipment when we come across jobs that need a specific tool and someone already has the tool.
thus saving everyone buying the item to use once. It works very well.richard

The helpful info has allowed the model to get to this stage.
bits are missing ( like a roof) and some pieces have a description on the etch but I have yet to find a description in the instructions about where the go. I might have to go free style on this, though how much I can do that away from the bench is unclear. The roulette of buying off eBay.

Will photos taken today of John Quick's model of a 50' clerestory brake be helpful? If so I can add them on the LNER channel.
Most useful. Have seen them.
thank you.

Thanks both.
I do have more of the kit, I just thought that these bits were most relevant to the discussion. I have the clearstory sides but no roof so will have to make that.
for clarity Bill when you say that it should not have the paneling around the alarm gear, that is because you are saying it should not have alarm gear?I have an end with steps but no alarm gear so could use that.
thanks James for the Dow reference. I am cautious of his diagrams as I have found detail anomalies with others as I look at photos of the carriages through their life, so if the photo shows a plain end then he has drawn that, perhaps without considering the other end. Don’t get me wrong, a great resource but a starting point. I should have done more research before packing this as my traveling project.many thanks Richard

I don't know the prototype, so I might be talking out of my hat, but the grab rails look a little chunky.
Yes but most likely the limits of 3d printing.

There's a three-quarter view of van #520 in Dow volume 3 showing a blank panelled end. There's also a drawing of the corridor version likewise showing blank panelled ends.
Which end is definitely blank paneled? The one away from the single door or at the single door end. As I said away from my books at present.
does the drawing say both ends blank panel?
thanksrichard
