  1. To make bill happy I have rectified the roof, and have worked out what the small holes on the ends are four, a hand rail for the roof access.

I have got half way through its accompanying third.

I have decided I prefer first class, not for comfort or because I am a snob, but because it has less doors and so less hinges and windows etc.

I must get round to placing the order for the composite and brake third

  2. Has anyone else noticed how this thread keeps gaining ground in terms of number of views and posts on other longer established ones. I would put it down to seeing people's skills is far more interesting than seeing what a factory can make. Long may it continue.

  3. Ah,

But have you spotted the 'mistakes on every page'? Though immensely valuable, the RCTS green books are riddled with errors, as too is Yeadon.

Just as an example, on page 87 of Pt. 6A in the RCTS green series it's stated that the K2s worked diverted trains via Barnsley and Mexborough to points east because of the underpass being constructed at Retford. Considering that the last K2 went in 1962 and the Retford dive-under was constructed in 1965, then how, and why? Willie also states that the U1 was the longest loco ever to operate on a British railway. Did he never measure an LMS Garratt?

Nit-picking? Perhaps, but there are loads more. Peter Coster gets hopelessly muddled with A3 boilers, as does the RCTS.

Never believe dates, either. Take the identical V2 pictures on page 53 of Peter Coster's Book of the V2s and page 61 of Willie Yeadon's volume on the V2s. Peter suggests 1957, yet Willie states 1959. Looking at the loco and stock, I'd say the former.

Never take as gospel anything I write, either!

I will ignore this post then!

  5. That photo shows coaches that have been refurbished and made into close coupled sets. The four wheeled coaches that form part of this thread had all be withdrawn from revenue service by 1910. Looking through my collection of photos where the trains are GC, and particularly the two colour passenger liveries, it is obvious that while some carriages, presumably late build stock, have roof vent on all compartments, many don't. Some carriages have no vents whiles other have vents over one or two compartments. See for instance the Biltcliffe photo on page 16 of "The Great Central in LNER Days 1" or the Biltcliffe photos in "Great Central Album"

I might hold off on painting to search for the French gray in the UK when I come over in the summer. What is a good colour match?

  6. They might have got brown and french grey, but I doubt they had brown and cream livery. One of the quirks of the MS&L was that they only put ventilators over the smoking compartments, these were usually at the ends of the coach.

Hello filler my old friend, must use you once again

Cover up the mistakes I make

To improve the look of the rake....

That's as far as I got.

  7. I think the diamond piece is called a tumbler, but I have more questions: one shoe per wheel (push brakes) or two (clasp)?

What is the prototype for the kit? Who is the manufacturer? Are there no instructions? Have you contacted the manufacturer at all?

It is a GCR 4 wheeler of mslr origin. It is a Mousa model kit and they come with no instructions, but bill is helpful when I ask what pieces are and there are generic instructions on line, I just didn't see order of fit. I will play around with the tumbler idea. It has two bakes per shoe so is clasp braked.

  8. Any advice happily received,

The arms are the same length as that was what I had but I will look into getting the correct sort.

I will get on to the bracket repaint too.

To be honest this will most likely be a temporary signal as I am not 100% happy with it and it will either go back into the works or I will try again from scratch.

I will be able to pick up more bits in the summer when I am back in the UK for a month, and I will have another go in the autumn.

  9. Well there's where opinions differ, I think it's very worthwhile pointing out the ridiculousness of all the hype in this thread.  The tale of the 'kings new clothes' comes to mind.

The APT fits my modeling perfectly

I model the one off, failures and never built of this world.

Some how i feel the rejected, missed opportunites and ugly ducklings deserve their time in the limelight so give me APT, give me fury, give me The Duke, W! and Great Bear. The Fowler pacific etc.

I therefore have ordered one. If you don't like it, great, less compertition for me when i bid on e bay for the ones that will never be a comercial proposition.

I wish you well in the modelling that you do like.

  10. This has to be the most boring Uk railway model ever.  I saw the real one at Shildon about this time last year, and the prototype model running on the club layout there at the same time.  It was boring then, and having seen the production model at Alley Pally yesterday nothing makes me change my mind.  Its still boring.  It looks like a long silver banana !

I'm sorry, but I think you've all been taken in by all the hype on here.

    maybe it is just envy

i hear the ladies like long silver bananas

maybe sour grapes that you missed the boat and will not be able to impress the ladies with yours?

  11. Sorry to open this up again, but fighting with the arms and cranks, question. If the back shade glues to the pin coming from the arm, what then is the white pin coming straight out the back of the post in almost the same place for? It hinders the movement of the signal, am I missing something?

    Many thanks

    Richard

  12. Why not wait until it arrives to find out the number, it will not change by ringing up and people are unlikely to cancel if they are number 21 or 27. Ironically as so many are saying they cannot wait for it to appear, ringing up Sandra might slow the whole process of packing etc down and delay when people get their models.

I have waited a year and a half so what is a few more days? I know locomotion will be doing their utmost to get orders out. Can we ask any more of them than that? I think not after all it is their job, but that is it, it is just their job. They have a right to a home life too as we all are. So I would say to them, pack for the eight hour working day, go home and enjoy your homes, come in the next day rinse and repeat. If it means my model arrives a little later so be it. It is after all not a matter of need, it is only a want....a fantastic want but a want never the less.

    Richard.
