40019 replied to John Tomlinson's topic in USA & Canadian Railroads
Bought 2 sets of Microscale decals for some KTM 33k Pregnant Whale tanks, off the Bay - $3.20 postage - here in 5 days from New York - can't argue with that. Paul...... -

got mine in the mail last week -
I've brought a lot of stuff in from the US over the years & many times evaded the duty, but over the last couple of years the RM / PF ransom note has dropped on the mat every time, only recent time where one got through was an O scale brass wagon model from Canada, no VAT, no handling charge, perhaps we should all import from Canada in future? Or could be I was just lucky.

Cars in KOAX series 18001-18131 were removed from the roster during 1986. Following are the quantities of cars transferred to subsequent owners (specific numbers are not known): —To the ADM Transportation Company: 60 cars, ADMX 14940-14999 (see ADM listing). Fully repainted. —To the General American Transportation Corporation: 20 cars, GATX 58151-58170 (see GATC listing). Not repainted. —To Cargill, Incorporated: 50 cars, CRGX 4466-4515 (see Cargill list- ing). Not immediately repainted. http://www.railcarphotos.com/Search.php?SearchReportingMark=gatx&SearchRoadNumberLower=58151&SearchRoadNumberUpper=58170&Search=Search one of the ex KOAX tank cars sold to GATX 58164 http://www.railcarphotos.com/Search.php?SearchReportingMark=admx&SearchRoadNumberLower=14940&SearchRoadNumberUpper=14999&Search=Search one of the KAOX tank cars in the 18001 - 18131 series sold to ADMX 14942 cheers Paul......... -
I use "racking grey" enamel from Halfords for light grey covered hoppers - I think it looks ok, and grey primer for some of the darker grey ones, but sealed with varnish. cheers Paul.....

Got caught out last week when an expensive boxcar I had neglected to mention to SWBO arrived with a £60 duty label stuck on the outside, whilst I was out of the country & couldn't intercept, she was suitably un-impressed as she further investigated & found out what I paid on the customs declaration. Oops - Paul......

http://prr.railfan.net/freight/classpage.html?class=X31 shows 176 X31a boxcars still on the PRR roster in 1968 - so not too big a leap to have one in MOW or stores use in the mid 70's - the latest built ones wouldn't have hit the 40 year rule until 1976 so theoretically could still be in interchange service until then. Cheers Paul....... -
Russell - do you have a date for 340 ?

For anyone looking for a small-space layout plan..........
40019 replied to shortliner's topic in USA & Canadian Railroads
Think I would leave this one as it has been dropped, repaired & "sympathetically weathered" ie badly to cover the repairs - not what I would want if I was dropping the best part of £400 on a loco -
When did Railfreight red/grey first appear?
40019 replied to chris101's topic in UK Prototype Questions
July 87 open day at Crewe had 56049 & 37002 / 37670 newly painted in Red Stripe Railfreight. 56068 was also freshly painted but with the red stripe on 1 side only - so guess it started about then. My first RF 56 was 064 in April 1985. -
New York to Washington DC Amtrak query
40019 replied to railroadbill's topic in USA & Canadian Railroads
If you are going to the Smithsonian in Washington, I can also recommend the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Washington Dulles Airport as it has a Space shuttle, Enola Gay & all sorts of other interesting stuff, never been to the actual smithsonian, so interested in other folks opinions as to which is best? Or just do both. -

you can buy a metrocard (7 days for $32) with either a UK switch or credit card (or cash) if using a credit card remember to put 00000 in when it asks for the zip code, only problem I had was it wouldn't do more than 2 transactions on a card, so as I needed 5 cards, I had to do 2 on switch, 2 on credit card & 1 with cash . In grand central I found it quite easy to access the platforms even without a ticket - couple of pics at EWR & Grand Central -
