got mine in the mail last week

I've brought a lot of stuff in from the US over the years & many times evaded the duty, but over the last couple of years the RM / PF ransom note has dropped on the mat every time, only recent time where one got through was an O scale brass wagon model from Canada, no VAT, no handling charge, perhaps we should all import from Canada in future? Or could be I was just lucky.

I'll go and have a look in the model shop - thanks
in a similar vein, just acquired a SF yellow bonnet which has arrived damaged, so will require the blue touching up, whats the nearest UK available paint colour that matches - thanks

You've got me looking and found this at Aberdeen, NC
As well as Star and another view
Much google mapping/street view to do.......
And because of the AC&W roster, I've now started looking at GP40-2LWs....
Cheers,
Mick
The Aberdeen depot is the Aberdeen & Rockfish - couple of pics taken at that depot

The Candor facility is nice, but I prefer the quaintness of the Star facilities, the ACWR is probably my fave NC shortline https://www.flickr.com/photos/35138806@N08/albums/72157652688708584

Apologies for the OT.
I was researching UK names in the US for my East of the Atlantic project (particularly a north of England name would be my preferred choice).
This is an English/US list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locations_in_the_United_States_with_an_English_name

There's a couple of Warrington's in the US

Hi
A few years back there was discussion on Industries - Corn Syrup
Jason Cook, who I see is still on this list gave some information etc.
I am currently searching for photos of tank cars and airslide hoppers from the 1970-80s era that at time were owned by Coca Cola, and used the reporting marks KOAX . The were all sold in the late 80s to various buyers including ADMT Cargill Seaboard US Rail Service, etc. and were then hired or leased back.
They were mainly as I understand it in grey color with no Coca Cola markings except for the reporting mark.
To date I have only found 1 airslide hopper car photo # 75079 a photo of Tom Golden. Copyright of Sam Beck. Anyone have a contact for Tom or Sam?
No photos to date of any of the KOAX tank cars.
A lot of both cars were on sold and remained the same color and had reporting mark and number changed.
Your thoughts Jason.
thanks and regards
Charles Harris

Cars in KOAX series 18001-18131 were removed from the roster during 1986. Following are the quantities of cars transferred to subsequent owners (specific numbers are not known):
—To the ADM Transportation Company: 60 cars, ADMX 14940-14999 (see ADM listing). Fully repainted.
—To the General American Transportation Corporation: 20 cars, GATX 58151-58170 (see GATC listing). Not repainted.
—To Cargill, Incorporated: 50 cars, CRGX 4466-4515 (see Cargill list- ing). Not immediately repainted.

I've struggled with decals on primer, so have been looking thru the shelves at Halfords for a suitable gray for L&N and covered hoppers.
I use "racking grey" enamel from Halfords for light grey covered hoppers - I think it looks ok, and grey primer for some of the darker grey ones, but sealed with varnish. cheers Paul.....

Did you see the awful weathering job on the third car, just before one minute in? Looked like someone creased some thin paper and stuck it on the lower bodyside, before painting the car off-white, and didn’t even bother with Dullcote. I mean, you’d never see som thing as stand out crass as that on the prototype, would you?
Oh, wait a minute...
needs a "do not hammer on the side of the car" decal adding - oops too late

Hello,
Does anyone have any basic dimensions (L, W, H) of the H-21A 4-door Hopper?
This is a model of the hopper. http://crocodiletrainstore.com/images/stories/virtuemart/product/found/bow37767.jpg
TIA
Cheers!

There used to be a policy of inspecting random parcels cages (airway equivalent to BRUTEs), but since 9-11, all parcels get scanned so they reckon they may as well raise the VAT. Not sure of the logic there, but if they are going to scan everything, then the £8 charge is out of order.
That said, I needed Atlas code 83 rail (it has a wider head) which I couldn’t find available separately, and Gaugemaster were out of stock of the flex track, so I bought it from Micromark, who had it on offer. Worked out cheaper even after paying the VAT and the extra fee. Only took a few days, too.
Got caught out last week when an expensive boxcar I had neglected to mention to SWBO arrived with a £60 duty label stuck on the outside, whilst I was out of the country & couldn't intercept, she was suitably un-impressed as she further investigated & found out what I paid on the customs declaration. Oops - Paul......

Oh dear, I seem to have bought one of these.....
For anyone travelling to Fort Lauderdale/Miami, I can heartily recommend Ready to Roll Trains, less than 5 minutes detour from the I-95 Interstate.

My struggle is finding a decent NS based webcam without subscription, (I have very limited funds as it is until I get back in work,) but the only options seems to be the likes of Horseshoe curve where you cannot easily identify loco numbers, let alone car numbers, which is something I am interested in. CSX gets lots of coverage in comparison.
I quite like the Thomasville NC one which is free & pretty much 100% NS
https://www.tvillenc.com/train-camera-1/
just had a quick look & 3 or 4 manifest freights & a stack trains with all sorts of power including ex BNSF executive SD70MAC's & some UP run through

A quick google reveals:
Distinguishing features include two stacks in the middle of the hood, a half-height radiator grille, no sand box on the front platform, and no small louvers at the top front corners of the sides of the hood.
Cheers,
Mick
Where was the pic taken Mick?

This was the first loco I saw when I went looking for the Georgia Central Railway.
It's a GP16 originally built for CSX. The Diesel Shop looks like a great resource.
I can only guess it was being delivered to the First Coast Railroad after works attention. (FCR only have four locos on their roster....)
There is a UK connection as the parent company of GCR and FCR is Genesee & Wyoming, who now own Freightliner.
As for dioramas. Not too far away was a chemical terminal served by GCR that had it's own switcher. (See. I'm already using Mercan terminology)
The exchange loops from the GCR are behind the loco.
Is it a SW9?
If - and it's a reasonably large if at the moment - I built a US layout, it would be a diorama/switching type.
And I've worked out a way to "not hide" my purchase. One of my club members models US, so I'm simply buying it on behalf of him..........
Cheers,
Mick

shows 176 X31a boxcars still on the PRR roster in 1968 - so not too big a leap to have one in MOW or stores use in the mid 70's - the latest built ones wouldn't have hit the 40 year rule until 1976 so theoretically could still be in interchange service until then.
Cheers Paul.......

Hi all, it's been way too long since I updated this thread, something I need to rectify, also, I need to fix all the borked photothiefit picture links.
Anyway, I am still in the US modelling scene and I have recently dug out the Bowser kit I have of a 40' PRR X31a boxcar. Now, plans were always to just construct this and use it to bolster my existing fleet of models, but as it turns out, I have enough cars already to work Gantsville as an Inglenook. So, with that in mind, plus the fact I have been reading a few articles by Marty McGuirk on prototype modelling, I decided I'd rather super detail this and turn it into a usable, yet attractive model. The issue of course is that the boxcar was built in 1934 and I don't model that era or anywhere close to that. I'd like to model it in 1970s or 80s, but I need to find evidence of one still existing in this time period, (40 years is a long time for a 40' boxcar). Can anyone point me in the right direction, aimless googling just brings up hundreds of shots of the kit and not prototype pictures.

Russell - do you have a date for 340 ?

Thanks. I do keep an eye out for them, but only to drool. Apart from the actual cost of the model - which for brass is a good start price, the shipping to UK is $38.95, which these days is par for the course, but import duty ('VAT') is an eye-watering $178 on top - & that would rise dependant on final cost.
Someone else will end up being the proud owner of this model.
Think I would leave this one as it has been dropped, repaired & "sympathetically weathered" ie badly to cover the repairs - not what I would want if I was dropping the best part of £400 on a loco

Was just wondering about something related to Railfreight livery recently, as above the earlier locos (37s snd 47s anyway) which carried it did not have the red band low down, however on later versions this appeared. According to Slilley a couple of years earlier than I had read elsewhere which may be good news as I have a red stripe version 37 which I always had suspicions about that it may be a year too late for my 85/86 layout. My question is does anyone know why the red band was introduced.
From the front the original Railfreght version was similar to large logo, especially once the roof was grimey, was it to distinguish a Railfreight loco from other liveries when viewed from the front?
Another thought perhaps the red stripe version of Railfreight appeared on the original Railfreight livery 37s and 47s to match the red stripe which had been on the 58s and 20s in Railfreight which had had the red along the bottom of the body from the beginning.
July 87 open day at Crewe had 56049 & 37002 / 37670 newly painted in Red Stripe Railfreight. 56068 was also freshly painted but with the red stripe on 1 side only - so guess it started about then. My first RF 56 was 064 in April 1985.

This has become a very interesting, and to me very useful thread. Great pics! The rail route itself and also tips on tickets, weekly passes and areas in NY and Washington to visit are very good to know.
Definitely going to Smithsonian air and space museum :-)
Previous visits to the US have involved long road trips, and on the west coast, so this will be first 2 city based trip (and east coast) without using a car. We're actually visiting a nephew who is working in Washington so going to NY first seemed a good fit.
This will also be the first train trip for me in the US to actually travel from A to B rather than a museum or tourist/preserved line. Apart from BART.
Should be enough to see rail wise on the train journey to keep me occupied (plus Mrs Railroadbill). Plenty of notes from the above!
Thanks again to all.
Bill
If you are going to the Smithsonian in Washington, I can also recommend the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Washington Dulles Airport as it has a Space shuttle, Enola Gay & all sorts of other interesting stuff, never been to the actual smithsonian, so interested in other folks opinions as to which is best? Or just do both.

There is a branch of the New York Transit Museum in one corner of Grand Central.
Any trainspotting in NYC stations is frustrated by the trains being on either a different level or behind walls. There is a good view of the yards from the north end of the High Line.
If you want to buy a Metropass (subway & bus), IIRC the ticket sellers only take money. There are machines that take credit cards but only the green ones take Canadian credit cards and this might apply to UK as well.
you can buy a metrocard (7 days for $32) with either a UK switch or credit card (or cash) if using a credit card remember to put 00000 in when it asks for the zip code, only problem I had was it wouldn't do more than 2 transactions on a card, so as I needed 5 cards, I had to do 2 on switch, 2 on credit card & 1 with cash .
In grand central I found it quite easy to access the platforms even without a ticket - couple of pics at EWR & Grand Central
