  1. Hello!!

I have a rake of Hornby MK2's and a MK3 sleeper in the "Northern Belle" livery, i am looking to repaint a MK1 Buffet/Restaurant in matching colours...does anyone make the correct shades for the Northern Belle livery, and will it match that used by Hornby (which is my main aim!)

If not, which other colours from Humbrol or similar will be a decent match???

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

       -Nigel

  2. Judging by the colour, it would have carried alumina, which is processed from bauxite; bauxite would have caused red staining, even on Swiss wagons.

The bogies are of a type that appeared from the 1960s onwards.

No idea where they did run, but wherever it was, it wouldn't have crossed the Channel; it's far too big, and doesn't have the 'anchor' symbol.

Thanks Brian, I didn't notice the lack of anchor symbol!!!

Aluminium oxide is another name for alumina, so I was thinking the same as you!!

      Cheers

  3. Does anyone have any information on this "Alusuisse" wagon??

     What did it carry.....Aluminium Oxide???

      Years active??

Did any find their way over here???

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

  4. Some of the Dapol wagons made for Modelbahn are in fictitious liveries, such as the Railfreight van, but some are correct!!

So....what about the OWV china clay wagon...anyone know if a wagon in this livery existed???

  5.

Hmm, don't know. The stock move theory sounds entirely plausible.

I had a look in some old (early 80s) Platform 5 departmentals books, and while the DB975xxx catering training vehicels were listed, I couldn't see anything catering-related in the DM series of vehicles (assuming those are ex-LMS).

Can't make anything of the lettering on them from your photo.

Don't know where that photo was taken, but the RCTS list of preserved coaches (PDF at https://www.rcts.org.uk/features/carriages/iudepartlm%202017.pdf)has an entry for

    "CORRIDOR THIRD TK
Lot no: 71 Builder: Derby Diagram: 1695 Period: 1 Built: 1924 Seats: 64T bogied
024744 395498 1295 1371 Old Oak Common T&RSMD Staff & Dormitory Coach Originally at Marylebone
(my bold) - I wonder if just maybe the photo depicts a clearout from Marylebone, and this one just happens to have been preserved and therefore recorded on that list?
Perhaps someone with a better knowledge of LMS coaches could say of the description above matches the photo.

Thanks for that, what you say is a distinct possibility, there is no exact date on the photo, it just says "Marylebone late 70's"

As you mentioned on one of the "Departmentals"  site photo, there is a 12 ton van next to one of the training coaches, and I I remember correctly, another MK1 coach beyond that??

  6. Do we know for sure that the other two are to do with the Catering Training? Could they just be parked in the same place? T

he photos of the Mk1 vehicles on departmentals.com don't show the other coaches, in fact there seems to be a 12T van next to one of them at http://www.departmentals.com/photo/975324-1

The caption for the B&W photo said the train was passing, rather than parked up as per the Departmentals photo's, could be a stock move including non related coaches I guess, but there is something written in the middle of the rear coach???

  7. Hi all!

I am looking for some information on a couple of the coaches that made up the Catering Training Unit that was, at one time based at Marylebone.....

I was looking to make a model of it, or something similar!

I have photo's and details of two of the MK1 coaches used (TDB 975323 & TDB 975324, but there were also other vehicles including a pair of coaches as seen in this photo......

Does anyone have any other photo's or further info, such as numbers or livery???

Am I right in guessing these are Stanier design ex LMS???

Thanks in advance for any help

  8. None of the departmentals books that I've got (Lineside/Platform 5, from 1981-85) list them as anything other than breakdown train dormitory/mess vehicles, or at least 975082/084 - do you have a number for the other vehicle in the photos? Or a date for the photos?

    From those books:

    975082 was W9261, and 975084 was W34756.

975083 was also listed as a breakdown train vehicle, ex-W34632, and 975085 ex-S34622

    82 based at Landore

    83 Severn Tunnel Jn

    84 Margam

    85 Cardiff

A batch, 975082/83/84/85, was converted in 1970/71 on lot 3749 by Cathays C&W

    Thanks for the info!!

BSO"82" and the other unknown BSK @Landore was taken 1974, BSK "84" @Margam was taken 1983

  9. Don't forget the red/blue livery was also used by the Mechanical & Electrical Engineers department, to whom these coaches belonged. It didn't just signify Research or Derby based stock. AFAIK, these early Mk.1 breakdown train conversions were new in the livery before the switch to yellow was made for later conversions.

Thanks, yes it is possible they were M&EE rather than R&D!!

I also was'nt aware that the red/blue livery was used on breakdown vehicles from new.....

Maybe it was used on all of this batch of BTU converts, that were done at the same time and all for Welsh depots??

  10. Looking for any info on these 3 MK1's.....

A BSK and BSO (ADB975082) which were part of the breakdown train at Landore..

And BSK (ADB975084) which may also have been at Landore, but is pictured here at Margam I believe?

Judging by the red & blue livery, these 3 coaches were once part of the RTC fleet??

Does anyone know anything about them in RTC service Lab or Test Car number, or what they were used for???

Any help would be greatly appreciated

  11. I'd have said green rather than turquoise or blue, as per my pic here (and subsequent discussion):

    http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/54304-1980s-greyturquoise-rail-stores-zrb-vans/?p=652565

The paint jobs and the lettering do look a bit amateur/home-made/vague interpretation, so it's entirely possible there were wide variations in the paint colour used on the few wagons that had that livery.

Thanks for that....i'll go for a mid-green, and lighten it if it doesn't look right!!!!

  12. Good luck, Nigel! By the way, forgot to mention it's ADB781007 and one of the air-braked, vacuum piped modified batch with new suspension so you may need to do a bit of conversion work on your Vanfit too. I may have other wagons in that livery but not yet scanned.

    Hywel

    Thanks Hywel!!!

I am doing a van as the one you showed, probably a Parkside model, and buy their separate FAT19 suspension kit, and something similar with a Tube, shame no-one makes the Ferry High, I think that would make a fine model!!

  13. Thanks guys!!

Reading some old threads, I see a few people have gone for a similar light blue to the ones you mentioned!!

Others have said its  green, and having studied more photo's, its still hard to be sure, but looking at this pic, it looks green???post-26008-0-58153300-1516815497_thumb.jpg
