  3. Another small step, one I wasn't sure how it would work out. I mixed a small amount of Milliput (fine) and used it to build up the awkward corner between the flanges on the sides of the tank tops. And also filled small gaps at the base of the smokebox. Not perfect, but as good as I hoped. All that's now needed is to add all the various fittings. If I can find them! Can't actually remember if I'd sorted them all, or if there were gaps. I know where the 3D printed chimney, dome and safety valve are. The buffers (GWR Metro) should also be OK, although not sure if I'll have to raid my spare Metro kit or whether I acquired another spare set. I think I did acquire some tank fillers. Not sure about the smokebox door. Here's to looking
  4. Looks a useful prototype for a compact Cambrian building. Quite a steep descent from the road; wonder if steps might have been better. No double doors, so it appears wheeling bulky stuff inside wasn't intended. Wonder what the rear looked like; would the entrance to the ticket office be at the front or the back? Caught glimpses of it when I moved to Aber in 1971 and intended to take some snaps, but by the time I got around to it it was gone. Nigel
  5. Re the coach sides, here's a pic of a 4-wheel coach under restoration: I've the impression that the moulding extends to the top, in which case black could be expected. Nigel

Original platform heights could vary a lot; here's a pic of Ynyslas: https://www.railwaystationphotographs.co.uk/ynyslas-railway-station-photo-dovey-junction---borth-aberystwyth-line-3-27631-p.asp Quite an extreme variation between original height and that of the extension, which I think was 1896, but probably that higher height had been established well before. In the case of Traeth Mawr, if it was built as a new station some years after Barmouth, then the platforms could well have been built at the now standard height. Nigel
  7. Think drawbridge in this instant was used in the more general sense of a bridge which opens, rather than the particular sense of one which is raised. Technically the original was a retractable bridge. Nigel
  8. At Aberdovey the posts either side of the main booking hall entrance were slightly closer together, otherwise I think they were equidistant. See my previous pics. I think the critical thing was the posts having to be in front of a bit of wall to which the canopy brackets could attached. There was plenty of room between posts and building. Nigel

  10. Close to finishing the body of my Cambrian Seaham. It has been under test running, weighted until I was satisfied. Here's a picture of it under test on my GWR layout: Nigel
  11. This is purely a guess on my part, but I think shellac would protect it from the consequences of damp, and might resist bowing.
  12. More tests of the engine under power, this time on my GWR layout. A bit of lead squeezed into the smokebox / front of boiler improved things. Decided I needed some more weight, and managed to glue another layer of (thin) lead sheet inside the tanks. OK, but the centre of gravity was behind the leading drivers and I reckoned over those drivers would be better, so tested fitted another bit on top of the first in the boiler which produced the balance I was looking for; with the c of g over the leading drivers all wheels are carrying roughly the same weight, which I feel is a good thing. That did it. Now very smooth even running, and the coreless motor is a gem. Tried it with 6 weighted GWR wagons on the layout and it didn't even notice them. There was the odd bump but that was due to track issues which need to be fixed. Here's a pic: So, now to do a bit of filling on the body and add the fittings. Getting there... slowly! Nigel P.S. I notice that one of the platform benches has flown into the bay. Wonder how that happened!

  15. Believe it's a B6. However, if it's successful wouldn't be surprised if other configurations are produced. Wayne seems to be doing that in other scales. Get the impression the base is 3D printed. Is that right? If so, can see it opening up a lot of cost-effective options.
  16. No pics this time. Glued a slab of lead in each tank. There was rather less room than I thought, so not sure yet if it's enough. Decided to test it. Found the gearbox jammed in the slot on the bottom of the boiler; thought I'd checked this but obviously not. Out with the Proxxon drill and a grinding bit, enlarged the slot. Chassis now fitted, running not bad but with the occasional stop. Checked again and decided the gearbox was still touching the boiler, enough to affect the compensation. Bit more grinding and it now runs fine. Tested it with 3 wagons, and then with a D&S Cambrian bogie coach. Handled them OK. Test track too short to try more, so I'll try it on my GWR layout, which needs connecting up. Nigel
  17. Looks excellent. Couple of questions. Have you checked it using the Society's 14.2mm fine scale track gauge? Just from the pictures my guess is that it would be fine. Out of interest, do the shortest timbers match the plain track base sleepers for length? The latter are scale 9' but with markings to reduce them to 8'6" length. So not a big problem if they don't.   18. Took some time off the signal box and cracked on with this. Fitted the handrail on the smokebox front; hope it clears the door but can't check as I'm not sure where I put the door casting! Also fitted the pipe from the cab to the smokebox. Here's the result: Then had a go at fitting the cab handrails. These are meant to be 0.5mm nickel silver soldered to thin fingers which project into the cab opening from the tank and bunker sides. No joy! I tried a number of approaches, but my dodgy right hand meant I couldn't position them and solder them up accurately; with two good hands it would have been fairly simple. Think I'm giving up on this. Being in the cab opening rather than stuck onto the sides they aren't too obvious anyway. Unless I change my mind, that's all the soldering down. Yipee! I've a bit of filling to do, mainly the corner of the flanges at the tops of the tanks, and gaps at the base of the smokebox; thinking of using Milliput. And I need to add lead to the tanks and check balancing and running. Not sure which I'll do first. Nigel
  19. Like the look of these. From the pics there looks to be a well thought out means off attaching the switch blades to the tie bar. These combined with the existing plain track should give a very straight forward way of getting started in 14.2mm gauge.
  20. I quite like the smell of Plastic Weld. In fact I use it in preference to other stuff wherever I can for that reason However, I do use it in quite limited sessions and don't hang around in the same room afterwards. Nigel
  21. I've been building compensated locos in 3mm/ft scale for quite a long time. Early on I decided that the conventional approach of fitting hornblocks to the chasses for the moving axles was a waste of time, difficult to do accurately, and prone to problems; simple rectangular slots in the chasses were good enough. And so it proved. Others have found the same. Admittedly my models aren't subject to endless running round radius 2 type curves. But slots in a hefty cast chassis should be fine. Nigel
  22. Some years ago was on Caersws station; the dmu had broken down and we were waiting for a replacement to arrive from Machynlleth. Took a look at the main roof. Was surprised to see the tiles had been covered with felt. Presumably this was one way to solve roof problems. The driver of the replacement wasn't hanging about; the descent from Talerddig to Cemmaes Road is etched on my memory.
  23. Here's the underside of Aberdovey canopy: I think using planking then laying felt and/or tiles on top was fairly common. Aberdovey used tiles but there might be felt underneath. Nigel
