  1. The vast majority of the Traders do accept card payments, as to your other question; what not to miss, it depends on your interest. Although it`s a bit late in the day, but printing off a copy of the floor plan from the Warley Home web page does give you an insight where the various Layouts and Trade stands are situated and you can plan a rough route around the venue. Enjoy the show.
  2. Another great modeller gone, may he rest in peace. I don`t know if it would be possible, but wouldn’t it be a fitting tribute to have some of his masterpieces put on display at say Warley, as many of us have only seen his work in photos.
  3. Being the selfish type I would prefer for the Show to be kept in December, I do the aforementioned shows at MK, Spalding, NEC. My next trips after Peterborough will be to Stevenage, then Longfield (Erith), then Doncaster. All nicely spaced out, moneywise and more importantly suits SWMBO, who believes I just go to these Exhibitions so as not to go shopping with her – as if I would!
  4. As Wigan Athletic are away to Preston NE that Saturday, so car parking shouldn`t be a problem
  5. I agree, I would contact a professional carpet cleaning company, if they are unable to remove it, then what`s the likelihood of you succeeding where they have failed? Although all these suggestions sound quite good, but they could make the situation much worst, leaving you with a permanent stain which even the professionals will not be able to remove.
  6. Purchased a ticket from the Warley stand at York yesterday, the printed ticket price was indeed £15.50.
  7. The one consideration that hasn`t yet been mentioned is the energy costs of the heating of your detached shed, that is, if you are planning to use it during the winter months. What form of heating are you planning to use, electric, natural or calor-gas, oil or even a wood burning stove? These running costs must be factored in, as it’s fairly obvious that the larger the building the greater these running costs will be. My railway room is situated in a detached 5m x 5m double garage, the walls, ceiling and doors have all been insulated. As it`s not possible to have this building connected to my gas central heating system, which would be the cheapest form of heating, the heat is provided by a 2.55kw automatic storage heater on a 7 hour cheap rate charge. This heater just about provides an adequate background heat throughout most of the day during the winter months Oct – March, except on the occasional days when the outside temperature is particular low and I will resort to switching on a small convector heater late in the afternoon to boost the temperature, as I can no longer work efficiently in the cold. The average running costs for just this one storage heater equates to £150 per year + additional costs when I switch on the small convector heater. And I do shop around to get the best energy deals.
  8. It’s shown on the booking form - use L18 followed by your subs number As there were no moans on here regarding the subscriber ticket issues for the Peterborough Show, I can only assume that these have finally been resolved. But just to be certain, I now always test out the promo codes + my subs number, when the respective booking opens, to confirm that it displays the discounted ticket prices. Meaning that when I come to purchase my tickets, I know that there shouldn`t be any issues. I believe that you only get the discount if you are a BRM hard copy subscriber, it doesn`t apply if you are either, a digital subscriber or a subscriber to other Warner magazines. Happy and healthy New Year to all.
  9. Looking forward to another great show Fingers crossed that the rain will hold off and prevent the car parking area from becoming a quagmire and having to walk through the mud and large puddles to get to the exhibition entrance.
  10. The problem that I can foresee with your ebay and other purchases is that they can only be valued at what the general market value is, which is not necessary the same as you actually paid for them. I would think that looking up your models in say Ramsey`s Guide to Model Trains may give you a better understanding of your models current value. If you have some kit built and not off the shelf models then you will need to convince your Insurance Company of their true value as individual items and not as one total lot.
  11. Just purchased my discounted ticket, without any problems that I have experienced in past years, are things improving? Although, when the booking first opened, I used the promo code + my subs no, just to verify if it would allow me into the discounted ticket page when the time came to purchase my ticket. I can`t remember if this has occurred when purchasing tickets for previous shows, but I discovered that it wouldn`t allow me to move forward from the ticket allocation page, until I added the ticket protection into my basket, even though I clicked on the NO THANKS button. Although it did allow me to I delete this item from my basket before I completed my purchase. But I have this feeling that this is a back door way by Ticket Factory to make money, hoping ticket purchases will forget to delete this (unwanted) item before they complete their purchase. But some good news, it does state, in addition to printing off your tickets (free) or having them sent to you (for a £2.50 fee), that you are now able to collect your tickets, free of charge at the venue entrance. I can`t recall this facility being offered before, so it should benefit all those who don`t have the means to print off their tickets and would have had them sent through the post.
  12. Not wanting to sound disrespectful but it appears that a some people have lost the plot. A “bargain” is only a bargain, so long as it’s still available to purchase. Surely if the outlet (apart from a budget supermarket), is selling an item cheap, then they have, in all probability only a very limited stock. By the time the bargain item is posted on here, I would take a bet that it wouldn`t be very long before they`re all snapped up. So what is the point of having a discussion about a bargain that could be no longer available? I imagine that the majority do what I do, just look at the latest posting to see if there is anything of interest, if so, make a quick decision; do I want it now? I agree that there could be a catch why the item is being sold cheap, hence some of the discussion comments, but to go into an sort of lengthy discussion on a bargain that may be no longer available is probably a waste of time. The only useful comments would be that there said item is now no longer available, as I have brought the last one, or they have now all sold, if only to prevent the outlet being swamped with enquires.
  13. In light of the Manchester Bombing I don`t know if there is going to be a size limit on rucksacks, but I would suspect that there is going to be an increase in security checks. Prior to this dreadful event if you arrive by train or bus, in the corridor leading to the exhibition halls there were already a couple of Security Staff carrying spot checks on bags, whether it is stepped up this year remains to be seen. But to my knowledge there was no such arrangement to check those arriving from the car parks; again, this could change for this year’s events, which in turn may leave to long queues forming at both entrances, especially as the Motorcycle Live event is again taking place at the same time. Has anybody attended an event recently at the NEC who could inform us if this is happening and what impact it had gaining access to the exhibition halls.
  14. The cloakroom facility is there basically to allow you to store your coat and maybe a bag or 2, until required @ £1 an item. Although I`ve never personally used it, I assume that if you go and retrieve your bag, to either place into it your purchase items or remove say your lunch and then return said bag to the cloakroom, would the Cloakroom Staff be requesting another £1 storage fee for each time this occurs as they would consider it’s a new transaction, even if your bag remains on the counter.
  15. Just as a matter of interest, if you fancy something else to do after you leave the show and it’s not too late in the afternoon; take a stroll down to Hoddesdon Town Centre, where there is a Free Vintage & Classic Vehicle Display taking place, which is well worth a visit. Just by sheer coincidence it occurs on the same date each year as the model railway show, but they are unconnected. The town centre is about a mile away from the Academy, but to those of you driving, I believe that you are able to get 2 hours free car parking in the adj Sainburys Store (no purchase necessary) which is a few minutes’ walk away from the display; other adjacent payment cars parks are available. I have no connection with this display, only as a satisfied visitor to both events over a number of years.

  17. There been a fair amount of comments here with regard to the lack of trains running, but I`ve yet to read any gripes stating; that this layout was supposed to represent a X-Y Branch Line, but there were TOO many trains running, it was utterly ridiculous the intensity of the service being shown. It was never like that, it spoilt the whole illusion! On the other hand if there isn`t too many trains to be seen on a layout, the Layout Operators could always post a notice stating - That due to a technical difficulty, the train service(s) at the moment is being supplemented by a “Rail Replacement Bus Services”. Apologies for the delays, we hope to restore normal service as soon as possible. In the meantime your tickets are being accepted to view all other layouts in the vicinity and you are able to return to us by all acceptable routes, once the problems have been resolved. Thank you.
  18. I get this feeling that there are a minority group of so called Modellers who attend these Exhibitions only with the sole object to name and shame anything or anybody that they consider don`t come up to their own so called high expectations. Be it the Layouts, Traders or the Catering. So what, there were a couple of layouts that didn`t run as were expected, or didn`t look that perfect, there were loads of others that did. What they have to consider that there is only a small time frame from the layouts being assembled on a Friday evening to actually running on the Saturday morning to ensure that all the electrical connections and components are functioning as expected. And when they don`t, it can be quite a mammoth task to locate and repair the fault, even more daunting with having dozens of eyes staring all waiting for something to happen. That’s not even considering if any of the normal operators go sick or can`t attend for personal reasons at the last minute and substitutes have to be found. Don` t you think that’s it`s enjoyable for the layout owner or operators to be in this situation where they layout is not performing to its full potential? I would like to bet that not one of these moaning modellers took the time to vent their anger directly at the layout operators at the time, for the shortfall in their layouts performance, but are more than happy to do so via social media from the safety and comfort of their armchairs. Will they be going to the next exhibition, some say they won`t but of course they will, for many it`s the only enjoyment they get looking for and highlighting the faults. Most Exhibitions Managers will accept constructive criticism of their running of an Exhibition, but I can`t see how they can be held responsible if one or more of the layouts they`re booked doesn`t come up to expectations and doesn’t perform as it should. Remember its exhibitions that keep our hobby alive, without this public showcase our hobby will die. With all their faults you have got to praise and thank Warners and their Exhibition Team for their willingness to put on these 3 large exhibitions every year. Except for Warley, how many other exhibitions have this high number of layouts on show? How many exhibitions has the so called market leader (RM / PECO) put on since their formation in 1949? I believe the answer is NONE. Yes they have been a Sponsor to many exhibitions, but they have never taken the risk to actually put on one themselves and probably never will. So Andy have that large drink to a job well done, out of the 1000`s that came and enjoyed themselves and never even noticed these so called shortcomings, you will probably count on one hand the ones that say they were left disappointed.
  19. There is quite a considerable amount of free on site car parking space, so you should have no worries whatsoever with not being able to park in one of the car parks. If you look on Google Earth you will be able to see the car parks, one area is adjacent to the Ice Rink / BBC transmission tower end of the venue and the other, larger car park is at the bottom of the hill from the main entrance with a free bus service back upto the top if you are not inclined to walk.
  20. It may sound illogical and a bit of a waste of time with this entire form filling exercise – “we`re never done it before, why start now”, just for erecting and dismantling a model railway layout for a 2 day show on a third party premises. But that is the important part, you will be carrying this activity on a third party premises, it doesn`t matter whether you are being paid or not. The third party under H&S legislation, have a duty of care, as you will also have, to ensure that all work related activities on their premises are carried out safely with the minimum of risk to you and others, hence the wearing of the correct PPE. They must be now made aware of the safety implicated risks involved, hence a risk assessment form being completed and maybe completing a method statement detailing how this “work” will be carried out. “Work” in your particular case would be the delivering, erecting, operating, dismantling and finally removal of your layout from the third parties premises. It may be just a “small” show, until that is, there is an accident and the H&S Inspectors are involved and take it from me they don`t take any prisoners. That`s when the important questions are asked; was the correct PPE being worn or used, where are the risk assessments and method statements, who filled them in, what are the highlighted risks, what steps were taken to mitigate those risks and who was responsible to ensure that this was safely carried out. How many incidents have been reported in the media recently where persons were fatally or seriously injured and no risk assessment was carried out, especially when it comes down to “not in a million years who had thought that would happen,” but it did! It may be silly and liken to a nanny state to anybody, who during their working lives, have never been involved, especially in recent years, with this level of H&S legislation, but anybody who has, will be very much aware why there is a need for all this paperwork. And this has nothing to do whether we are in the EU or not, it was brought in 1974 to reduce the high number of accidents (and fatalities) throughout UK Industry, with later additions to cover ALL others persons involved in “work” related activities, ie yourselves. You may find more increasingly that these forms will need to be completed for any show on third party premises, not only to adhere to the current H&S legislation, but for insurances purposes as well. I hope that this will not put you off exhibiting your layout for future shows, but I`m afraid it’s the way of the world nowadays.
  21. You must have a printed ticket, as there are no facilities at the entrance to allow your phone to be scanned. Having a broken printer is one of the downsides having an e-ticket. Solution- You could forward your email to a friend, who has a printer, Or you could try your local Library, as the majority now have computer and printer terminals available for public use, log into your email account and print off your ticket, but there could be a small charge involved.
  22. Note - Ticket Factory does charge a £1.50 fulfilment fee – more than 2 x 1st stamps!
  23. I`m planning to pay my first visit to this year’s exhibition at the Roundhouse, but after reading the various comments posted after last year’s event, I`m a bit concerned regarding the car parking arrangements and charges. I trust that there will be signage in place to direct us to the correct visitor’s car parking area?
  24. Together with a long weight!! I think that only applies to screwdrivers!!
  25. The “Warners” shuttle bus uses the lay-by behind the local W3 bus stop to drop-off and collects its passengers, while the A. Parks shuttle bus to the lower car park will use either this same lay-by or the area directly outside the main entrance when the lay-by is already occupied by the aforementioned shuttle bus. Therefore there is no interference with the local W3 bus using its bus stop throughout the day.
