  1. I know Ian Allan did several LMS Albums, and albums for many other pre-group companies, but was there ever an "LNWR Album"?? I've trawled the various second hand booksellers, and can't find anything. Any assistance gratefully received
  2. Jol Thank you for the tips on wagon kits. Yes, I was going to have a stab at pre group. My small shunting plank is intended as being somewhere in North London territory, so I'm not sure the Coal Tank is completely appropriate. However, it will do until I pluck up the courage to have a go at the GEM/Branchlines NLR 0-6-T kit!! The idea is for a small coal yard, and private siding feeding the warehouse of R.Cratchit and Sons Ltd (formerly Scrooge & Marley). I've always thought Dickens has a rich vein of names for industrial premises!! I'm looking to rely on Metcalfe and Scalescene industrial buildings, so looking forward to some cardboard modelling.
  3. A late addition to this thread. Bought my LNWR version from Alton Model centre. As always, they test run any loco before you buy. This one ran almost silently straight from the box!! I've never heard so quiet an RTR loco! I'm happy it will trundle back and forth on my small goods yard/test track. Will have to get hold of some LNWR stock now..... Some of the old Ratio kits seem to be the first stop I think.
  4. My first visit to the CMRA show. Clearly very popular, with a good spread of layouts and traders. Best layout for me was Arun Quay - another great exercise in 7mm modelling from the Gravetts, which I had seen almost finished at Warminster last year. I also rather liked Treloar Sidings, which I had seen at my local exhibition in Alton last year. The trouble with seeing small 7mm layouts like these, and with the availability of more RTR 7mm locos, the temptation is to have a go........ The other layout I enjoyed was Rannoch, which utilises N gauge in a good way to replicate the open spaces of the West Highland line, greatly helped by the availability of appropriate locos and stock. Many thanks to the organisers.
  5. Dave Will Bridport or Charmouth be making any outings in 2018??
  6. Loads of copies in Ian Allan bookshop near Waterloo............
  7. Further to my last post, I have managed to secure a copy of Buildings in Miniature from ebay - a tad more than a few quid, but as I've been looking for so long it was worth it!!
  8. I remember buying MRJ 50 (now well thumbed) with Ditchling Green as a feature - quite stunning.....and even better in the flesh. Saw Arun Quay at Warminster...I actually think the concept and background are the best. Just like looking across a creek at Bosham or similar.......
  9. Thank you bbishop....Stevenage definitely one to consider as I was born and brought up in Welwyn Garden City a few miles south of there. My first marital home was a flat in Stevenage...! Thank you Western Star...Basingstoke 2019 is a long way off, but at least its only 12 miles from where I live (Alton) I do like the way the Gravetts attend less well known exhibitions (with all due respect to those mentioned above)
  10. Having seen this delightful new layout from the Gravetts at Warminster in the summer, I had fully intended to get down to Uckfield to see it in completed form. Unfortunately, autumnal gardening requirements took precedence this last weekend!! Does anyone know any other exhibitions which Arun Quay will be attending. I'm not sure if Gordon is a contributor to RMweb. I've been a fan ever since I saw Ditchling Green in the early 90's. Thanks in advance....!!
  11. Thks Simon I'm sure the book would be well received, so I'll have to be patient! I've been on the lookout for an original copy for years..unfortunately I've not been lucky enough to find one in a second hand bookshop for a couple of quid...!! Martyn
  12. I came across this thread by accident, but was wondering if anything has happened re the updated "Buildings in Miniature"??
  13. Purchased my copy from Alton Model Centre. This is a really great update of the original. Excellent layout and photos's; copious drawings and plans.
  14. Thanks to another RMwebber, I have been able to find a copy of this book. What a great community!!
  15. Simon Looking forward to purchasing this from my local shop - Alton Model Centre. The original was always, and remains, a favourite. What chance an RTR Wantage loco..........!!!
  16. I'm looking for a copy of this book by Peter Paye, published by John Masters in 1998. I've tried all the usual suspects, but no luck. Has anyone got a copy to sell??
  17. Have now tracked down many of these magazines. The one I can't find anywhere is Model Railways for June 1978. Any ideas where I might find one?? Have trawled through ebay and Magazine Exchange with no luck. Could anyone possible scan and send the article on the Neilson Box tanks in this issue??
  18. Graham Very many thanks for this comprehensive list!! All I need now is a second mortgage to buy the back numbers......
  19. Some further interweb research has uncovered the fact that Narrow Gauge and Industrial Review Issue 95 contains a retrospective of Tregarrick - and it's still available!!
  20. I have always had a soft spot for the North Cornwall Minerals railway, ever since coming across an article in an old Model Railways magazine. I have tried to collect as many of the articles that I could find over the years. Having actually seen some of the locos and stock at the recent Warminster exhibition, I am now trying to collate as complete list as possible of Iain's articles concerning Tregarrick and it's eclectic locomotive roster. The results so far: Model Railways June 1978 Neilson Box Tanks Model Railways June 1979 Tregarrick Yard Model Railways November 1979 Hercules Model Railways December 1979 Progress Report Model Railways January 1981 Tregarrick Regained Model Railways February 1981 Tregarrick Regained 2 Model Railways June 1981 The Walrus and the Carpenter Model Railways February 1982 Tregarrick Tribulations Model Railway Constructor May 1980 Tregarrick – a brief history So far I have managed to find copies of all of the above, except the June 1978 MR. The introduction to the June 1979 article mentions descriptions of "several" locomotives in previous issues - I've only tracked down the June 1978 one, but are there others?? I know this is a bit geekie, but comments/information welcomed!!
  21. Very many thanks to all concerned for organising this excellent show. I hope it does become a regular on the circuit. Highlights for me: 1. Arun Quay - another belter from the Gravetts, and looks to be a worthy successor to the much missed (for me anyway) Ditchling Green. The concept of the back scene was stunning. 2. Finding that the proprietor of Shelfie was at the same school as me many moons ago, so shared a few memories. Shelfie is really excellent; and cause for me to get the modelling hat on again! 3. Last, but by no means least, the chance to see some of Iain Rice's North Cornwall Minerals loco's and stock "in the flesh". I came across the article on the building of Hercules in an old Model Railways magazine, and have since tracked down every article on this series of layouts that I can lay my hands on. To see the stock was a great pleasure (and ticks another box, having seen some of the Buckingham loco's at Expo EM earlier this year!!) Once again, many thanks!
  22. The layout that took me from train sets to railway modelling was Ian Futers "Ashleigh" in the Sept 72 RM. This also contained the first sight I ever had of "Buckingham" - a great favourite. The only Futers model I ever saw in the flesh was the P4 "Otterburn" which I saw at a De Havillands club exhibition in Hatfield in - I think - 1979. This was a revelation to me, and I spent ages watching it. At the same exhibition there was also an excellent OO model of Ventnor, complete with chalk downs - I never saw this featured in any magazine though. A surprising omission from this series of posts is "Ditchling Green" by Gordon Gravett. This was a wonderfully simple layout, but beautifully finished. I can remember seeing this at Guildex in 1992, with my 4 year old son on my shoulders (he's now 28!). His favourite loco on the layout was "the engine with two domes"....an ex LBSCR C2X of course!! I did see Iain Rice's "Woolverstone" at a show in Manchester once - again the only piece of his work I've seen in the flesh. I only occasionally buy the odd magazine now, as it seems the days of the inspirational layout are long past. However, I do have boxes full of older magazines to return to for the memories.........cue violins!!
  23. Many thanks for the references. there are some old aerial pics on "Britain from above" website http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/
  24. Do any original track plans for the layout on Hayle Wharves exist?? I've looked up old OS maps but they are none too helpful........
