Sir Tom had been being treated for pneumonia for several weeks, it is quite possible that he caught it from someone then. The covid was probably the last straw, the main damage was done by the pneumonia.

      RIP Sir Tom.

Very sad - a truly iconic gentleman who in spirit brought the nation together during its difficulty.

I suspect that his immune system had probably been "shot" for a while - preventing him from catching Covid / pneumonia (or anything else, for that matter) would unfortunately have been virtually impossible - with predictable results.

Most people who've been anywhere near a hospital in the last year would be aware that visitors seem to be strenglich verboten - especially on Covid wards, where they try to keep visitors away unless they don't think someone's got long left.

The moment it was reported that Captain Tom had been admitted to hospital with "Covid pneumonia" - was not in an ICU - and was being visited by family - I knew what to expect, but really wanted to be proved wrong.

Despite this, the news still came as a terrible shock.

      RIP Captain Sir Tom Moore.
