  1. Yeah, its been like that for a good while and was done to provide ETS (obviously) whilst at the same time to keep the front looking original as per steam heat only era when it was carrying a pre tops number.
  2. Pretty much as the title, please. What was the maximum speeds of goods trains in the private owner wagon era, before nationalisation? I assume 35 mph to 45 mph? Thank you.
  3. I just ordered 7 packs.😲 I just need to stop my mrs seeing the confirmation email on her phone.😏
  4. Has anybody sussed out how to get the sides off these? I want to add some loads by the way of a false floor that sits on top of the cross bracing but the way the sides are angled inwards, theres no chance without taking it apart. I did remove the screws from the underside but thats as far as I went and side wouldn't budge.
  5. Excellent, thanks for the info!! I just had a look on Dapol's site, there's non of these on there anywhere!!! Forgot to mention earlier, the thickness of the shim is .75 mm., I actually used a piece of expired railway Sentinal card!!!😄
  6. You're welcome! Is there any way of knowing, without actually handling one, to differentiate between the first batch and the later batch? Thinking further, Ill have a look on Dapols site to see if there's a new list of wagon numbers, maybe that's the way? Agree about the weight, its nice to have die cast underframes , ive had experiance of them in American H0 stuff, they can be heavy without being to heavy! These are abit extreme.
  7. Yes, its certainly worth the little effort, I reckon one waggon is do-able in 25 minutes! Like you say, once you see the error, its hard to un see it. The hardest part of the job is re-fitting the wheel set as there's virtually no room between the frames! It left me wondering if I had say EM or P4, i think you'd require new bogies to convert these to those gauges.
  8. Yes indeed!! I've been messing with mine and very happy with the results and its fairly straightforward to fix. This was how I raised the wheels up abit in the bogie frames. Slice off the 2 small pips holding the metal pick-up/ wheel bearing etch/ the metal bit and it comes off after a tease with a blade easily enough. It looks like the factory applied an amount of superglue to it to stick it to the side frames. I took a coulpe of minutes to remove the glue from the metal part and the inside of the frames, it comes off really easily. Clean up the parts. Cut out a shim from plasticard and superglue it to the frame as shown in the pic. Leave a small gap of about .20 mm as this allows the metal part to drop down nicely flush on top of the shim. Next, make sure there's no old glue on the metal bit, and burnish with some emery cloth to give it some tooth. Apply some glue to the face of it and drop it in the bogie frame. Fit a pair of clamps making sure its flush with the bogie frame and leave to dry. It takes me about 15 minutes to do one bogie. NOTE: Thankfully, there's some wiggle room with regards to the dimples the axles run in and the recess's in the bogie side frames, just enough to allow that metal part to be raised upward about 1 mm ish whilst still being located properly inside the bogie side frames. Make sure this is cleaned up and straight!! Also ensure the old glue is removed from inside the frames, a quick scrape with a blade and it pings off easily. j Remove remains of pips and glue on the shim observing that gap! About .3 of a mm. Apply some super glue to metal part, re-fit it, the pips on the metal will sit to the tops of the recesses moulded in the bogie frames, this insures they will be sqaure and level with each axle end. Fit some clamps and ensure its flush with the side frames- no gaps!!!! You can see the top of the mod here but once painted and fitted, its totally hidden from view. Much better, before on left, after on right! Its about 1 mm , not alot , but enough to improve the appearance. Before on left, after on right. There is no impact on curves either, bogie still turns the same as it did before the modification.
  9. Sorry, not much help to you as Ive not seen those.
  10. Got mine today. An absolutely superb book, very pleased with it!!!!
  11. Thank you very much for this, very helpful.
  12. Rather than start a new thread for such a basic question, may I ask please, how do Hornby coaches compare with Bachmann's? Im specifically interested in the MK1 blue & grey versions but Ive never had a Hornby coach to compare. Thanks for any feedback.
  13. Alot the American manufacturers have used boxes of this size and style for years for their locos, its definitely the way to go with such heavy and highly detailed models, I've never had anything arrive damaged, ever, using this style of box and Ive had alot of H0 stuff over the years. The cheap and cheerful Bachmann & Hornby style of packaging just doesn't cut it for this sort of thing IMO.
  14. Whilst I applaud any initiative to improve things like sleeper spacing and the appearance of the rail as well as addressing the tarnishing of NS rail, the fastenings used on this new legacy track don't really match anything in UK prototype practise. It looks like a rough representation of the old RD or RN clip fastening from the mid 50's that was used on concrete sleepers and is now all but extinct in the UK. To me, the material and appearance of the rail is lost by the appearance and lack of realism in the moulded 'fastening' detail. Think Ill be going with Peco's Pandrol representation for my new layout venture personally. RN clip below.
  15. Thanks John. This is excellent, just what I'm looking for!!
  16. Please excuse my ignorance but will this book include all running numbers of the MK1 & MK2's that were built or more of a pictorial publication, or even both??
  17. Not much competition in all honesty, the Hornby version is terrible around the cab front/ windscreen area, its not even close. We're well over due for a decent Class 50, which less face it, has only been done twice in 00 (Lima, Hornby) over the last 42 ish years! I for one would buy alot of them if it happened.
  18. 2 fifties had black window surrounds on NSE livery, 023 and 026. 044 wasn't one of them though. http://bescotplus.co.uk/trains/50023_Bescot http://www.class50.co.uk/50026.htm
  19. Ill just leave this here-
  20. Just stumbled across this image of 50001 on ebay tonite. Looks like it also had the same treatment! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/393849570235?mkevt=1&mkpid=0&emsid=e11021.m43.l1120&mkcid=7&ch=osgood&euid=0c366ad642a74a919ad0bba35200209a&bu=43100156798&ut=RU&osub=-1~1&crd=20220107031837&segname=11021&sojTags=ch%3Dch%2Cbu%3Dbu%2Cut%3Dut%2Cosub%3Dosub%2Ccrd%3Dcrd%2Csegname%3Dsegname%2Cchnl%3Dmkcid
