  1. I bought D5705 (from Hattons) back in 2015 for what was a good price,at a time when Heljan diesels seemed to have fallen out of favour. I don't have a layout,so the loco has only had a few runs on a length of track on the dining table,it runs smoothly and silently.I suppose the Class 28 could fall into the category of "how many people actually remember them and what would the likely demand be?". Reading the above,sounds like quite a lot,and I'd guess that when the preserved example is up and running that demand would increase.
  2. Last bought items from Hattons back in August,and the lady I spoke with couldn't have been more helpful and friendly-outstanding customer service. Best wishes to the staff for the future.
  3. Something I'd never noticed in all the photos I've bought of the class,and study of my own (poor) pics of 22's. Referring to "Diesel Hydraulics Class 22" softback book,a prelude to a hardback book on the class,a pic of D6355 at Paddington appears to show this loco without the circular cutout,although the pic is a bit shadowy on the front of the loco. Other pics in this book of the D6334 series onward, all except D6355-D6357 appear to show the cutout,including D6334 in all-over green with headcode boxes. Maybe someone knowledgeable can throw some light on the purpose of this cutout...? And credit to Dapol for including it,even if the loco numbers are not right.

  7. A splendid photo,far better than the one I took on 24th June 1973,with my trusty Instamatic. I visited Swindon Works and Marsh Jct. on this date,with D7054 were D7009,D7023 ,D7055,D7068,D7074,D7076,D7089,D7093,D7096 and D7097.Plus 824,and just visible in one of my pictures,part of a Pullman unit. Haulage that day : 1954 Ealing Broadway-Swindon,1940 Temple Meads -Paddington.Nothing noted for Swindon-Bristol.. D7032 noted at OOC on 25th November 1973.
  8. Don't agree with any of your comments. If you're able to "deduce my biases" then you must be a good mind reader.If I view a documentary on Rail,the NHS,politics or whatever,I view it with an open mind,and hopefully being able to learn something. I would expect these type of documentaries to give facts and information that the viewer can use to form their own opinion,and why on earth I should need to factor Elton's bias into my analysis of the programme is beyond me.

Not really wanting to get into politics here,though I found the programme informative and enlightening,for me Elton is a really tiresome individual-just my opinion.At least he had the good grace to admit to being a "leftie Metropolitan liberal".I don't see that as a reason for him to witter on with his biased viewpoint. Yes,how easy it is for an alleged "comedian" (never found the bloke remotely funny) to make jokes about Michael Portillo,who probably wasn't most people's fave politician,but wasn't it him as a Minister who prevented BR from closing the Settle-Carlisle line? Also,no mention of the damage being inflicted on the Rail system by the long-running strikes.Then again,that probably doesn't fit in with Channel 4's and Elton's left-leaning bias. Just saying...

Splitting hairs a bit,but back when "The Heyday of the Warships" came out Rail Express did a review of the book and an article on the Warships,with several photo's that didn't feature in the book. One of these pics was in 1971,of D817 entering Temple Meads on 1E01,which was described as the Newton Abbot-Sheffield Motorail,Several N/C car carriers are at the front of the train. HTH.

Hi Halvarras, Some very interesting notes there,I seem to remember an article of yours in one of that series of magazines that appeared sometime last century,with a pic of a Hymek at Penzance.Some time ago "Traction" did a feature on Hymeks,which included a list of those that worked the Kensington-St. Austell Motorail on half a dozen or so occasions in 1971. Many times when me and my mates were playing football in Perivale Park (jumpers for goalposts..) I'd see a Hymek trundling along on a freight,probably to or from Park Royal ( now wish I'd made the effort to investigate/photograph the goods depot at Park Royal..). Seems like we're agreed they were a fabulous type, the sound of one accelerating away from a station or signal stop was something to savour,and if I need an instant nostalgia fix I just need to look at my set of numbers from D7069...

I was born and lived in Greenford for many years,as regards loco spotting I was nearer to Southall,and started in 1968,so Hymeks would have been plentiful,but it took a couple of visits to Swindon and Marsh jct.,and as mentioned to Canton,for me to see all 101.A Hymek in Cornwall would have caused much excitement!! Just by the way,and as this topic was about liveries,a livery which I like on any other diesel is gfye,but doesn't look quite right on a Hymek to me,each to their own...
  14. I bought two of the Southern Pride kits 11(count them) years ago,and as soon as I opened the boxes I knew they were way beyond my skill level. Actually had them on my table at the Alresford event at the w/e,no one even looked at them... I may still buy a Heljan triple pack,but individual availability is a plus point I think,and I don't think duplication matters.They both appear to be fine models,the blue/grey pre-tops examples would look pretty decent behind a Warship or Western...
  15. Very interesting posts and photo's on a fabulous type! Am fairly sure that D7021 also did not have the lower door handle mod,but happy to be corrected. Saw D7081 at OOC on 9 8 1971,possibly having been already been withdrawn after fire damage.D7006 was seen on a freight at Clapham Jct. on 18 8 1971,by around late September she was stored at OOC.As is well known,these were the first two to be taken out of service,and by the end of that year the line of stored Hymeks at 81A had grown considerably.Difficult to take in at the time... A clear memory is of being on a "Merrymaker" from Ealing Broadway to Cardiff and Barry Island in May 1972.Our train was cantering along the down relief in Sonning Cutting when a loud noise announced D7005 belting past on the down main,perhaps on a Worcester service.Many Hymeks were seen that day,including D7073 and D7083 at Canton,copped them both and never saw them again.Last sighting of D7054 at work was on 21 10 1972,while on another "Merrymaker" from Ealing B. to Manchester.Saw all 101 by the skin of my teeth,we should all be thankful that examples can still be appreciated today... Hmmm,just remembered,this topic was about liveries!
  16. Received my two ECC versions this morning,terrific wagons,well packed and I'd say extremely good value for money. A bit of weathering to be applied at some stage.. Full marks to Revolution/Rainbow for bringing these to market,don't suppose a PAA Tullis Russell wagon is on your agenda next...?!
  17. Hi Chris, You're being more than fair 😊,but I think I'll hang on to them! They're part of the grand layout plan that hasn't got anywhere yet... Regarding your "unsatisfied demand for Polybulks",nowadays there may be cream available for that....just saying! Also realised that in that post I said the Polybulk was the best r-t-r model yet....in a Accurascale forum. Apologies to you chaps,I do have some of your fine wagons!
  18. Rooting around in my storage crates last week,I found I had seven Polybulks,two had price labels of 28 quid! That price soon went up to around £46. For my money,they're the best r-t-r wagon yet produced...
  19. A current-spec 42 would be great but would there be a demand for it? Then again,the Kernow D600's seemed popular. Although the Bachmann 42's may not be at the top table for detailed models,some of mine date back to 1999 and still run really well,in that respect not showing their age at all. (Unlike their owner...)
  20. Reference the 1992 Rose Grove to Paignton service,I photographed this train a few times in Devon.Had to look up where Rose Grove was,didn't have a clue. From what I remember,and I stand to be corrected,this was a Summer SO service,maybe just six coaches,so I think unlikely to have formed a commuter service. One of the trains that made a day's photography on a summer Saturday in the early 90's around Dawlish etc. worth the trip...

  22. I'd like to see a re-tooled Class 42,but can't help thinking it would have happened by now.I don't suppose there are many people who actually remember Warships and still have any rail interest. Agreed a current-spec model should include disc fitted D800-D812,and as the fabulous Kernow D600 has been produced with discs and route indicators,Bachmann should be able to do likewise,as well as cater for the different train heating boiler roof arrangement. But,as Halvarras says,with many upgrades and one-off prototype models appearing,a new Class 42 isn't out of the question.An all-over green disc-fitted D804 Avenger would be very acceptable...
