  1. Not an Ebay thing, and face-to-face is not an option due to the distance between parties. I had this vague idea that you could go into a post office, hand over cash, and it would magically get to the seller? In these particular circumstances (only!) I'm happy to take the risk of the seller getting my cash but not dispatching the goods. Cash payment is my idea, not the seller's. It's to do with the maintenance of domestic harmony ... It would be nice to make it work, but I won't cry if it's not feasible.
  2. If I wish to buy an item from a private seller and would prefer to pay in cash, is there a way of doing this so that neither party is exposed to the risk of not receiving either their item or their money? (Both ends of the transaction would be in the UK).
  3. I use a Bluetooth mouse with my Chromebook. Could I use a pair of Bluetooth headphones at the same time, or is Bluetooth a one-thing-at-a-time system?
  4. Oh bless you kind sir. An explanation and a work-round. Mrs Spikey says thank you very much indeed.
  5. My lady wife uses Photos on her Windows 11 laptop to look at her photos, and has just discovered the "full screen" facility which she activates by clicking on the double arrows thingy in the bottom right-hand corner of the page upon which the photo opens. She is now vexed to discover that some of the pretty pictures she's downloaded off her gardening sites initially open "full screen" but then immediately shrink to not "full screen". Can anyone please tell me what's going on? Why is full screen sometimes not full screen?
  6. Problem solved - I've just discovered that I can blog the rebuild and allow comments.
  7. I am engaged in rebuilding an old musical instrument, about which I have (and will keep having) questions to ask of folk who are knowledgeable about such things. I have joined the appropriate FB group which is very helpful to me, but I don't want to bombard it with my questions every few days. It occurred to me that I could document the rebuild on a blog-type thing, upon which I could invite folk to comment. Can you in fact comment on a blog? Or is there perhaps some other way of achieving the same end? Suggestions welcome!
  8. A few years ago I got a couple of reels of red 1" masking tape from Wilko which was to some extent "plasticky": sort of halfway between the paper stuff and electrician's tape.. It still tore easily, but was slightly stretchy and more robust than the usual white crepe paper type. It was the dog's danglers for labelling wires and whatnot. If anyone recognises what I'm on about and knows of an online source of it (any colour), I'd be very glad to know of it.
  9. I thank you sincerely for taking the trouble to post that, but frankly I simply couldn't be doing with all that faffing. At my age, life's too short. I now know that I was thinking of BreezeBrowser, which is exactly what I need. Unfortunately it's no longer free, but at least there's a free trial.
  10. I must be missing something here. I cannot see how with Win 11 and Edge I can drag and drop a folder of image files into my desired order, select all, and have them renumbered for me consecutively such that next time the folder is opened, they appear in my chosen order. How exactly is it done?
  11. OK ... the real problem here is that I used to be a professional snapper, and I can't for the life of me remember the software we used for doing this. Essentially the problem is this: say I have folder containing 5 jpegs. The file names are A, B, C, D and E. When I open the folder, the thumbnails are in that order. What I want to do is drag and drop them into the order C, A, D, E, B, select those five, click on "rename" and Bob's your uncle - next time the folder's opened, there they are, numbered consecutively but in the new order that I wanted them in. We did this all the time, but I don't now know what we used to do it ... 🙄
  12. I need software which will let me view a folder of images as thumbnails, drag and drop them into a custom order, then rename them sequentially so that thereafter they open in that order every time the folder's opened. Is there anything available free which will do that, either for Windows 11 or Chromebook?
  13. Thank you gentlemen. I fear that I was experiencing a brainfart. I'm not sure how I managed it, but I now have Gmail on the Windoze machine - and a shortcut to it. I am much heartened by this success 🙂
  14. It looks like I have made an expensive mistake by having been persuaded to buy a Windows 11 laptop in order to eventually replace one of our Chromebooks. I have spent most of today wailing and gnashing my teeth with the thing, and right now all I want to do is curl up in a corner and whimper quietly. Apart from anything else, it seems to me that in order to use Gmail on it, I need Outlook, and in order to get that I need to buy Office! Am I missing something obvious here?
  15. Old internal doors which have a mortise lock on them often have a dangly thing over the keyhole which is suspended from a screw, such that it can be swung aside in order to insert the key. Does anyone please know the correct terminology for it?
  16. Having used several different air and electric ones on cars and motorbikes, I am familiar with their uses. Similarly, I have for years used cordless tools. As tigerburnie rightly points out, my question was about cordless impact drivers and their use by the building trade. It's still beyond me why it looks like most tradesmen seem to think they need one, unless of course it's to avoid loss of site cred. What next - special screws for use with impact screwdrivers?
  17. Just been marvelling at all the toys for boys in the short-form Toolstation catalogue, and I'm left scratching my head. I know that scaffolders nowadays use impact drivers rather than the traditional spanners, and that seems to me an entirely logical move. But what's with all the power tool makers now pitching cordless impact drivers at the building trades, complete with impact screwdriver bits? Who uses these things, and why are they now apparently A Thing?
  18. Thank you gents. That's the grit sorted, now only the type of paper to go. Don't some types clog faster than others or doesn't it really matter for something like this?
  19. What grade of abrasive paper do I need to finish-sand Polyfilla-type filler with an orbital sander? And what type of paper's reckoned to be best for this? (Yes I do have quite a lot to do and hand-sanding's out at the moment due to a shoulder problem.)
  20. OK, so maybe I'll give FB a go. Anybody care to suggest a group to try for selling my 00 early/late BR steam locos and rolling stock, including 70-odd private owner wagons, many of them being less common/limited editions as well as controller, scenics etc etc?
  21. Apologies for moving back onto topic, but has anyone experience of flogging stuff on Gumtree or via a Facebook group? I am right now having to part with my railway and need to decide which way to go. Ebay is a non-starter AFAIC. ETA - I'm minded to flog the lot to the local dealer. But ... I know it's a business and he has to make a decent profit, but it irks me that when it comes to boxed 00 wagons I understand he offers a fiver each. My problem with that is it takes no account of a lot of uncommon/limited edition PO wagons, all of which are pristine, which could be expected to go for considerably more than what he charges for his normal run-of-the-mill wagons!
  22. I should think it did at that price! Anyhow ... Q "What's the difference between a Villiers 9E engine and a 10E?" A "Ten degrees 🙂" I think I only ever saw a horrible Vogue the once. What on earth were they smoking in Hall Green when they designed it?
