  1. Kennaway Tunnel at Dawlish has always struck me as of odd design, I can't recall seeing such a design/technique on any other tunnel. It almost looks as if two arched portals have overlapped and another portal was going to dug through the cliffs on an inland trajectory but was abandoned!

Also, the arch of the main tunnel isn't a perfect arch, the side that intercepts with the 'fake' portal appears to drop lower than the other side.

Can anyway shed any light on the engineering benefits behind this design?

A couple of links that might help illustrate:

    Thanks,

    Ross.

  2. That's really useful, thank you.
I did wonder if Colour Rail had become the recipient of any of the CCQ slides but couldn't find them on their website despite searching the catalogue.

I'll kindly take you up on your offer of sending you a PM with the MI slide details

    Regards,
    Ross.

  3. I have a related query that I hope someone can help with, I thought it better to add to this thread rather than start a new one...

I've recently acquired a few slides that have been produced by 'CCQ' and 'Modern Image Slides' but I cannot find any information about either company and suspect they may have ceased trading some years ago - if that is the case, what becomes of the copyright in this instance? If the stock/assets of the company are sold on to an individual or other business presumably the copyright goes with it?

    Thanks,
    Ross.

  4. Here's a couple of slides I've purchased recently which show some long lost freight flows:

07th June 1975, An unidentified Class 31 is in the centre road at Exeter St. Davids with headcode 6B71 which at the time indicated the Torrington/Barnstaple to Exeter St. Davids Milk/Goods vans train, which according to the excellent RailGen website was usually a class 25 turn but is strongly suspected to be a Newcourt (MOD RN stores) trip working.

    31xxx Exeter 07/06/75

46002 running near Powderham with a southbound mixed freight, and what a mix it is!
From what I can make out the consist features a Siphon G 'Enparts' van, four Presflo wagons (cement empties), a Weltrol Trestrol wagon, various box vans, various open OWV clay wagons and two Polybulks (china clay), comprising 35 wagons in total.

This could possibly be the Exeter Riverside to Plymouth Friary Goods but any and all information gratefully received.
No date information but circa 1979?

    Peak Freight Flow at Starcross

    All the best,
    Ross.

Well done for catching this, it ran 4 hours early (which at least made it visible in daylight!) The final outward loaded train had run 3 hours early, very nearly catching me out, so I had expected the empties to do likewise but by the time I found out it was moving it was already in St Blazey Yard!

I'm not used to chasing erratic modern freight workings, I remember just turning up and not having to wait long for something to pass by, usually headed by a diesel-hydraulic...........those were the days 😁!

As if to illustrate my frustration at the current scene, yesterday morning I noticed a 6Z73 Exeter - St Blazey special freight working, labelled 'aggregates' and due to arrive at 17.18 - Saturday freights are not common and having just read that two extra JIAs and some JGAs (a new type to Cornwall) are expected shortly from store at Long Marston I wondered if this could be them - so I went down to Par station to see, and hopefully photograph. The train seemed to be making good progress, even running a little early, but the time came, and went - nothing. Checked RTT and "This service has been partially cancelled between Lostwithiel and Par at the request of the operator". So having been on the move for a few hours it was  presumably caped 10 minutes away in Lostwithiel Down Loop, and that was that. I took it personally and went home in disgust!

I still have no idea what it was or where it is today. Oh well.

    That is frustrating!

It was a move to bring the additional JIAs down to replace the CDAs but apparently the driver wasn't signed to St. Blazey so they were looped at Lostwithiel to await a driver that could take them the final few miles.

  6. A 35mm slide I purchased from that well known online auction site that caught my interest as soon as I saw it - someday during August 1978 a rather filthy pre-refurbished 50007 'Hercules' with a mixed freight at Tothill Park, Plymouth, with what's suspected to be the 7B64 12.55 Friary - Exeter Riverside goods:

    Hercules at Friary, 1978

I bet it made a wonderful sound!

  7. I thought I'd seen all the possible variations and oddities amongst the Exeter to Waterloo NSE stock and then I saw (and purchased!) this slide from that well known auction site, as it features an IC red stripe brake vehicle in the middle of NSE stock, which is not something I've seen before - thought it may be of interest and use for those looking to flex their authentic modelling options!

    50030 'Repulse' at Plymouth 23/11/91

I think it's a MK2 C rather than a D/E aircon but it's hard to tell - anyone ever record this rake or seen other shots of it that may help to confirm?
(I appreciate It's a little extend beyond the 'Exeter - Waterloo' title of this thread but it would have been part of that route around 60 minutes later!)

    Thanks,
    Ross.

  8. I was very pleased to receive a surprise email from the Fifty Fund this week which announced a combined reissue of ex-Laira Depot fitter Mike Woodhouse's long out of print books featuring many tales of the Class 50's, which for this release has been partly re-written and updated with additional stories, complete with a forward from ex-Area Fleet Manager Geoff Hudson:

Very much looking forward to poring over this one!

  9. Recent railtour activity to the Duchy has produced two pairs of 47's, one top and tailed and the other double-headed:

47826 leads West Coast Railway's 'Northern Belle' railtour from Bristol to Par with 47804 tailing, 8th July:

    Northern Belle heads south

D1944 'Craftsman' & D1935 'Roger Hosking MA 1925-2013' lead the return leg of the 'Cornish Riveria Statesman' tour from Penzance to Derby, through a grey and mizzling Saltash station, 23rd July:

    The Duchy Drizzler

The next scheduled railtour for the county is this Sunday (31st July) when 'Duchess of Sutherland' returns once more with 'The Royal Duchy' from Bristol Temple Meads to Par along with a tailing Class 47.

    All the best,

    Ross.

  10. Just a few more from this collection, in particular ones that I find especially interesting/unusual:

50002 'Superb' runs into Exeter St. Davids from the West with an unusual consist - it's been suggested that this is most likely an MOD working, which I'd agree with given the items in the load, 20/05/1984:

50002 at a changing Exeter St. Davids

The 'infamous' appearance of a Class 58 at North Road - 58002 & the failed HST set that ended up pushing a failed 58002 into Plymouth, 01/09/1984:

A Broken Bone at North Road

Tank freight on Lipson Curve - 47076 'City of Truro' hauls a rake of what I think are oil and cement tanks which I'm guessing would have most likely been from Cattedown and Plymstock cement works? Sometime in June 1984:

    All the best,

    Ross.

  11. A couple of weeks ago I went through my Dad's slide collection knowing that there were at least a few railway related ones in there from the mid 1980's - we were surprised to find quite a few such slides that had been kindly gifted to me by a friend of my Dad's that we'd both forgotten about and unfortunately cannot remember the name of the person either - they shall be credited if that information ever comes to light! Rather than let them sit unseen in a box any longer I've started sharing them online for all to enjoy. Here's some of the first to be scanned, showing some Devon Diesels:

45012 runs past Newton Abbot west signal box and enters the station with 1M86 1000 Paignton - Liverpool Lime Street, 18th August 1984.

    spacer.png

'Sir Edward Elgar', 50007 is seen at Exeter St. Davids with 1M08 0924 Paignton - Birmingham New Street, 04th August 1984.

    spacer.png

33017 enters Exeter St Davids from the East, 04th August 1984 - no service info available but possibly ex-Barnstaple?

    All the best,

    Ross.

  12. Unfortunately the owners of the land that St. Penleo operates on have come to the unanimous decision that it must be closed and redeveloped for accommodation due to a recent significant increase in the local population.....

Although not the original intention, St. Penleo has been a great test layout for my re-introduction to modelling and I have learnt so much in the 5 years of its existence that in a way I'm glad that it now has to be dismantled until the day comes that I get the opportunity to build again from scratch and to put all the things I've learnt into practice....and then to learn many more besides!

Most importantly it has provided many hours of enjoyment and so I'd like to share a few final recent pictures of stock being operated:

47537 rounds the 'scenic curve' with a postal service:

  13. A Crompton in Cornwall!
Great to see this pair heading out of the County this morning, in a very lucky spell of sunshine:

    A Crompton in Cornwall

Captured on video too - they sounded great, the high walls at the Western end of the station always do a good job of amplifying and reverberating throaty engine sounds! :)

    All the best,
    Ross.

    Hi

I hadn't realised that 50034 was numbered 50007 on the other side 'till I saw the above photo at Penzance.

    Cheers Bill

It caught me out as I didn't realise it was 50034 on the other side! The loco is actually 50007 but carries numbers of other class mates on the other side - It was previously 50014 'Warspite', but now carries 50034 - If you're collecting numbers I guess it's a good way of completing the list a bit quicker

  15. Was great to see Class 50's back in the South West this weekend, and spent a few hours happily 'chasing' and even riding behind them.
On the way down, thundering through St. Germans:

At Penzance before the return leg:

    Penzance Pair

I was able to join the return journey as far as Par, where upon departure I planned a quick run to the front of the train to take some more pictures it as it departed, however my plan was well and truly scuppered as the engines didn't stop until they were way past the station - doh! Well it was load 13....

    spacer.png

Finally, whilst waiting at Par for my train home a Castle Class set came in from the East with the lead power car sounding particularly rough and after having stopped for a minute it then abruptly shut down leaving the rear power car to push the entire train out of the station and up the incline. Fortunately it only had 3 coaches!

  16. I had the privilege of seeing the layout 'in the flesh' on the weekend and as I said to Alex then, the images look great on RMWeb but in real life it takes it to a whole new level!
This will certainly be a big draw once out on the exhibition circuit, and deservedly so.
