  1. Great info about the embossing engraving. I have asked here a couple of times in the past about a similar attachment/head by Chomas for engraving with the Silhouette. Glad to see that the embossing tool by Silhouette performs like this! Bgman, is this the "fine" version? Do you know if it fits a Cameo 3 machine? I know you mentioned using it on a Portrait. It appears to be a good solution for brickwork and engraving (on styrene) work. EDIT: I think that based on the color, that this is the "stippling" tool by Silhouette and not the embossing one right?
  2. I am also using Inkscape here and it can directly drive the Cameo 3 (at least on Linux, using extensions).
  3. Hi all, Sorry for asking again but i am looking for an engraving tip for the Cameo 3. Is the Chomas one the one i should be looking for? As you can understand, so far i need to re-scribe / clean any engraved lines that i have created using the normal blade (as expected since it is meant for cutting and not engraving) when i create items with engraved details (panel lines, brickwork etc...). I suppose with an engraving tip i ll sort out these issues? Another question. If i use such a tip to engrave items in a 1st pass, can i replace the tip with the normal blade, without removing (unloading and thus loosing alignment...) the cutting mat/items and then perform the cuts in a 2nd pass? Many thanks in advance for your time and replies!
  4. Quick update, I finished work on a few foreground trees. An Elm, a coconut Palm tree and a Washingtonian Palm tree. I hope you like them. Thanks for stopping by!
  5. John great work there! Cheers for the link!!! I ll take a detailed look! David very nice clip! I had Bugs in mind (when choosing Cucamonga & Azusa) when he mentioned Cucamonga at some point in a cartoon, while trying to get somewhere.
  6. John thank you once more for the kind feedback! Glad to hear that you will be moving over, the weather can be good here. Also glad to hear that you modelled the SP, i see that you moved to modelling German prototypes right? Splendid work by the way!
  7. Wendell and Allegheny1600 (John), thank you very much for the kind words! Wendell: True that the Pasadena subdivision is very interesting. You mentioned a few of the reasons that made me choose it as a subject, ie urban railroading crossing the Route 66 at Colorado boulevard (which is my major scene in the layout having 10' on the layout modelling the Boulevard across three modules), and having several famous passenger trains on the line. Another important factor were the manageable size freight trains on the line, their routes and switching involved. So in choosing the LA area (which is by far my favorite part in the US), Pasadena came first as a choice. I am glad to hear that i have captured the feel-spirit of the area! This is a great compliment for me. Allegheny1600 (John right?). yes indeed i am Greek, and correct on the Greek saying with every home and a Yannis... . I am glad that you like the layout! Thanks for your kind feedback!
  8. Very nice work on painting/weathering the tracks Jack! Looking forward to seeing more.
  9. Time for an update at the LA, Pasadena RR. The time has come for some scenery at last! I have been working on the South Pasadena modules where a brewery and a furniture factory (and a warehouse) will be placed. Between them there is a bridge (road) scene that i sort of focused. While working on this i did finish all the ground work and almost all foliage for the modules. I hope you like the work, and many thanks in advance for your time! Yannis Scratchbuilt bridge (with Wills girder plates added on the sides) Piers made out of parts from a Vollmer truss bridge and some Wills parts. Bridge finished... East bound local freight just passing below the Fair Oaks avenue bridge The other side of the bridge... A foreman overseeing switching of a boxcar from the brewery Overview of the same scene...
  10. Admirable work sir! Well done. On a different note, i am looking into getting an engraving tip for my cameo 3. Any suggestions? I have seen mentions of a Chomas replacement tip. Is that the one to go for? As you can understand i need to re-scribe / clean any lines that i have created using the normal blade (as expected since it is meant for cutting and not engraving) when i create items with engraved details (panel lines etc...). I suppose with an engraving tip i ll sort out these issues? Another question. If i use such a tip to engrave items in a 1st pass, can i replace the tip w/o removing (unloading and thus loosing alignment...) the cutting mat/items and then go about with the normal cutting blade and perform the cuts in a 2nd pass?
  11. Thank you for the reply. Did you set a specific number for the extrusion width? Slic3r PE has 0.45mm for example in the 0.1mm layer height setting (with a 0.4mm nozzle)
  12. Excellent work there! I was wondering (in post #12), did you print the storefront flat on the build-plate? Did you print it on the Prusa (at 0.15 layer height?)
  13. Great work Londontram, What kind of adhesive did you use for the laminations? Very very clean construction without any warping!
  14. Impressive prints with respect to quality and very informative discussion! Redpiperbob, did i read correctly that the furniture, windows, walls and roof sections were printed on a Prusa mk2? I am referring to posts #57 and #59.
  15. Revisiting the comparison between the old/new apps for the Z21, i see that the older version is using more screen area for buttons / throttle in comparison to the new one. The newer one is much better at describing function icons when you set up locomotives. I am using the older version by the way mainly for the reason of screen coverage. It would be nice if they implemented somehow Zimo decoder update capability into the app (or the Z21 updater app).
  16. I finally got my Z21 new DCC station (terrific system i must say!!!!)! I tried both the old version of the app as well as the new one. While some features are better in the new version, i miss having the option to test the function buttons before choosing icons etc... when setting up a new loco. CV programming seems better (as in easier) in the new app, where it provides a description of what each CV does (old version did not do this if i am not mistaken). POM does not work for me in any app version (old or new) given the digitrax/Bachmann decoders i have. Programming track works fine though. I prefer the discrete notches/bars (like speed-steps) on the old-app throttle vs the continuous color throttle when setting up the speed of the loco (i hope i am making sense with this). I think i can adjust speed better when using the old style throttle (or at least it seems easier way to me). All in all it is a nice progress, as seen from the perspective of someone who has used both apps for the same amount of time. Looking forward to spend more time with the new Z21 and check out more of the features/differences across the two versions of the app.
  17. Many thanks Jason (very helpful). I did follow what was mentioned in post #114 and what you described with the loop/cut. It does end up with a very tidy looking result in wire-view. In solid view all these diagonals are not visible on the faces of the objects whereas they are visible on the wire-view. Furthermore, these diagonals cannot be seen either in the slicer program when i preview the layers (including the in-fills) on the exported stl file. I do get the same diagonals when i convert an extruded 2d design and then convert it from curve to mesh. It seems that (if the stl file is good to go), the only practical problem that these diagonals cause is that i cannot bevel properly some edges on the resulting shapes (since these diagonals get in the way). And if i keep the extruded design in "curve format" i cannot have edges to edit... Following up to my 2nd question, is there a way to snap the edge of a 3d cube to a specific edge of a 2d rectangle? (trying to apply the cut/loop method accurately over an existing 2d design imported from svg) Many thanks again Jason for the very helpful reply once more. Yannis
  18. Very nice along the walls layout, tidy work and nice integration of the layout into the room! Will be following with interest, thanks for posting.
  19. First of all allow me to congratulate the contributors for the excellent tutorials and information provided. As in the Silhouette cutter thread, they are super helpful. Reading through this and working with blender in the last few weeks, i came up with a couple of questions: 1. Based on post #114. If you create a door/window/wall, and you punch holes in it, you got these extra diagonals forming up (as displayed in post 114). Similar diagonals do appear if you extrude a 2d shape with islands/holes etc (ie extrude the window frame, or make it a mesh and solidify it). My question is, if these extra diagonals etc... create any problems in the stl file exported for 3d printing or if the printer sees only faces and edges and disregards the diagonals. I tried removing those diagonals and it made the object non-solid again. 2. My second question is, if i create a 3d object on top of a 2d svg imported design (like tracing it). Is there any way to snap the "loop cut/slide" lines onto specific lines of the underlying 2d svg design? I hope i am making sense with this (trying to do what post 114 says but with snapping). Many thanks in advance for your time and replies, and congratulations once more for the cracking job at these tutorials.
  20. Very very nice weathering and atmosphere!
  21. Gotcha Iain! Both the DR5000 and the Z21 are indeed very good pieces of kit! (still learning about them hence my questions, small personal preference so far from what i read towards the Z21 since i do appreciate that one can update the Z21 w/o using a PC).
  22. Iain thank you very much for the Z21/DR5000 info. Very helpful in combination with Rudy's video. OT: You got me concerned now with the "closing up the app" possibility (i don't know how probable/likely this is though...) since i am between the z21start and the DR5000.
  23. Rudy many thanks for the very informative videos!!! Well done! I would very much appreciate your input if you got experience on the following subject following up the Z21/Dr5000 video: I was wondering if the DR5000 when used with the Z21 app (and/or the Wifi-Multimaus), can do all the things that the Z21/z21 can do. In particular, making up consists (MU), programming locos and speedmatching locos (with the Z21 you time the locos over a lap and the Z21 does the speedmatching automatically based on the times recorded). Thanks again Yannis
  24. Many thanks Zomboid for the motivating feedback! I ll try to take some pictures sooner than later of a train on the layout. I only got some finished rolling stock modelling-wise at the moment.
