I only clean the material if it's really manky. Otherwise I just let the water based flux do its job. Most of the kits I have are well over 20 years old.

Whilst I agree with the above, I've only heard good things about Edge kits for buildability so a good introduction to locomotives when you are ready.

I got mine direct from Lais (I don't mind buying their adapters).

I try and have spare grub screws that use an Allen key rather than a flat blade screwdriver for fitting. Much more user friendly.

The parts to build a Comet coach are £60+ and you need wheels, couplings, paint and transfers. Possibly the interior as well, not sure about that.

Oddly enough I bought the DVD and soundtrack to Going Home a couple of weeks ago and then suddenly the theme is in the news (for an excellent reason). I've never actually seen the film - something for this weekend hopefully.
