I only clean the material if it's really manky. Otherwise I just let the water based flux do its job. Most of the kits I have are well over 20 years old.

Oddly enough I bought the DVD and soundtrack to Going Home a couple of weeks ago and then suddenly the theme is in the news (for an excellent reason). I've never actually seen the film - something for this weekend hopefully.
