Metra have over 100 F40PH (most are -2 spec) - especially on the UP operated route from OTC (in the video)

Some have been upgraded to FP40PH-3 spec

There are also a few F59PHI s that are ex-Amtrak West/Cascade and a few MP36PH-3S (now 3C) that work that route as well. #90 in the CNW heritage scheme turned up yesterday.

Never got to sample the FP40PHM Winnebago locos that work the BNSF racetrack, other than a blurred passing pic at Aurora.

There was another move of 6 F40s today - just after the morning rush.

Made up of odd ones and a pair that congregated on track#1 under the roof

It does seem unusual the number of loco swaps on a push-pull service.

OTC would make a great layout apart from the cost of the double slips............

I've got plenty of video and shots taken at Naperville!

  2. NMRA NATIONAL CONVENTION BIRMINGHAM 2022

It is with a heavy heart that we advise that we can no longer run the NMRA National Convention in Birmingham UK in 2022.

Birmingham City bid successfully to host the Commonwealth Games (similar in scope to the Olympics but for British Commonwealth nations only) in the Summer of 2022 after Durban, South Africa withdrew as host city. This occurred sometime after our own bid to host the NMRA National Convention was successful. As a consequence of that we moved our dates back two weeks to accommodate.  Now, as a consequence of the Olympic Games being postponed one year into 2021 due to COVID-19, and the World Athletics Games in Eugene Oregon being postponed one year to the early Summer of 2022, along with the European Athletics Championships in Germany, the Commonwealth Games are now beginning to hold venues and accommodation across the beginning of our convention week. It is possible that the Commonwealth Games dates might change officially. This of itself will put a strain on booking accommodation and meeting rooms. and will likely impact the prices to be charged.

Furthermore, our train show location, which is scheduled to play host to a number of indoor sports during the Commonwealth Games, has now confirmed that they cannot guarantee that the venue will be back in a useable condition following the Games, in time for the Convention to run at all in the summer. The National Convention needs to be in the Summer for a number of reasons ranging from availability of accommodation in a city location, to traffic conditions and heritage railways timetables which are geared to the holiday periods. There is also the added concern that travel, particularly international air travel, and hotel availability might not have returned to its pre-COVID-19 levels putting extra strain on our planning.

We apologise to all those who we know were either looking forward to participating as exhibitors or convention attendees and who were planning trips to the UK around the Convention.

Please note that this doesn’t affect the annual NMRA British Region Convention.

    Regards,

    Chris.

I'm afraid I have to agree; to my eyes the beige is much too dark. IMO the original Bachmann RR 158 colours were more accurate. Which is why I'll be hanging on to my two old units. I'm disappointed because I was looking forward to upgrading them.

    Vivian,

Have you looked at the a Fox Transfers livery pack for the Original Class 158 livery?  https://fox-transfers.co.uk/transfers/express-class-158-complete-livery-pack

Possibly a quick fix. Hope this helps!

    Hi Mick,

The 21 pin MX630D works in the Bachmann 90 okay - one of our MRC club members fitted one and it worked fine. The Zimo tech sheet is at:

     Cheers,

     Chris.

I’ve read on another forum that a Zimo MX638D can be reprogrammed to work with the 90, instead of the Bachmann 36-569 decoder.

(I would copy and paste the details, but without permission of the poster on the other forum I will not do so.)

A quick visual comparison of the two decoders and they virtually look the same.

There is a marked difference in cost - in favour of the Zimo decoder..................

Has anyone else tried to fit the MX638D into a Bachmann 90?

    Cheers,

    Mick

Fabulous news.  Just being thick for a moment is the chip plug and play given the pre-fitted speaker or do you have to do anything to connect the chip to the speaker?  I assume it's all plug and play.

Yes, it’s plug and play for an ESU v5. You need to remove the wires for the speaker that ESU supply with the chip, take out the blanking plug from the 90 and stick the V5 in. Easy as that, job done!

  7. I’ve managed to finish the lighting - picture of 45115 below with 1mm plastikard bases. Many thanks to you all for the ideas and encouragement. I’ll be getting the ready made ones for my Hornby 90 rebuild for Ingatestone, Jim. RAF96: good idea re the template - I can use it minus the Wipac for my 45/0 !

    Thanks again and regards.

  8. To improve the Bachmann Class 45/1 I modernised about 10 years ago, I've added a hardwired Loksound v4 with Bif's sound project. Now, I also want to add LED lighting to the front ends which I've modified to the mid-1980s markers and central WIPAC headlight configuration. I have some pre-wired sunny white nano LEDS from DCC Concepts for markers and 2mm sunny white lighthouse LEDS for the headlight, along with plenty of 1K and 10K resistors. I want to make my own units to fit behind the nose using veroboard. Has anyone had success doing this? I've trawled t'internet for the past fortnight and found nothing about it !

    Regards & thanks in advance,

    Chris.

  9. Hi Mick,

I’m reading it as well - I’ve done a Genesis GP38-2 with Wowsound and got an Bachman’s Amtrak ACS64 lecky with it prefitted - it has a corny “Easter egg” extra in that it has 3 US patriotic songs hidden away - if you are at Ally Pally this weekend, I’ll show you..!

  10. Theft of model railway wagons

Whilst unloading the van carrying our exhibition layout “Copenhagen Fields” at the Model Railway Club in London N1, on the evening of 15/10/17, an opportunist thief stole a small black and aluminium case containing 81 wagons and three coaches. These were made by the late Bill Blackburn. They were of enormous sentimental value to his family. He made them with great love and painstaking care. We are particularly sad because, after his death last December, they were a very important part of his legacy to his grandchildren.

We hope that someone will come forward with information about their whereabouts so that they can be returned.

Each item has a conspicuous yellow dot painted on the underside. They are all to 2mm : 1ft fine scale standards and will not run on N gauge track. They are exquisite examples of work in the scale. If you hear of a collection of ‘N gauge wagons’ being sold please let me know. I will update with the police crime report number as soon as I have it.

    Please share widely.

  11. Thanks for that jewel, it didn't stop them running through the darkness, around 3 AM local time I heard three go noisily by.

The BNSF bridges have both gone - Hulcher dealt with them. UP are doing theirs in house - heads have gone from the old bridges and the low boy has turned up for the first of UP bridges - sometime later today, once the backlog of freight has been cleared!  UP 5601 West just passing with coal empties. Loud !!

    Chris

  12. I'm staying at Rochelle at the moment - have been advised that joint BNSF and UP engineering staff will cut over signalling to the new signal bridges and start cutting down the old ones from 06:30 Central Time tomorrow -  typical - I come here for the trains and get engineering work ! !   The staff appear to be staying at the same Super 8 as me judging by the large collection of UP and BNSF trucks in the car park..

    Chris
