  1. My understanding is that most gas smart meters piggyback off the electric meter to send the readings in.
  2. I haven’t been overly impressed with the forced migration from SSE to OVO, but I do like the way that entering a meter reading online at any time, then automatically works out and shows the balance to date within around 2 minutes. (Less keen on the way you submit a reading on the last day of the billing period, and they still estimate a figure to take it up to Midnight of that day)
  3. To be fair it’s a snip of CH watching a press conference, and no more than most of us on this threads saying the same about CH himself most weeks
  4. Under the print menu for most programs you normally have an option to “Save to PDF”. This uses a mock print process to generate a pdf and allows you to save it under a name and file location of your choice. This means you can scan as a jpg, tiff or similar, manipulate in another program such as word, paint etc and then save as a PDF.
  5. If you want some real fun chuck a 50amp kiln on the end of a rural supply line as described by @samthomas , and then watch the kiln manufacturer and electric supply trade blows over whether it is the kilns design or the supply that is causing all the neighbours lights to flicker as the voltage drops…
  6. PayPal send me a text code on approx 50% of logins (not helped I suspect that I access a work account on the same device…)
  7. Believe it or not a lot of payments could often be put through with just a card number and expiry date, and not other details depending on the merchant account or machine setup. Higher risk merchants (as in stock or services more at risk of attracting fraud, normally because of ease of resale or high volume merchants) had higher standards needing multiple data points such as card holder address to match or third party authentication (text codes) for many years. This is generally being widened to all merchants which means websites and apps need updating to stream this data to the card merchant service and some banks have moved faster than others to require it.
  8. The other game that really needs changing is the standards for home insulation and energy saving installation. We are looking for a property at the moment and it’s fun to see that spray on loft insulation may well make a home unmortgageable due to the large number of unsuitable or bodged installation, cavity wall insulation causing damp, leased solar panels (whereby the house keeps the energy and the lease company collect the FIT) not being compatible with mortgage guidelines as they have a lease on the roof or no pigeon barriers etc etc. And that’s before you get to the construction standards….
  9. A lot of fixed tariffs are subject to having a smart meter fitted in their terms and conditions, unless your property is unsuitable for one*. *often older installations where the installers don’t feel comfortable fitting them on arrival or existing meter fitted on asbestos board.

    On Cats

We put the plastic litter in their cleaned regular tray and popped the cat in it a couple of times, she got the hint and went promptly.
  11. Would they accept other documents showing it, such as insurance certificates, VAT registration or supplier invoices?
  12. Obviously someone who’s education missed the joy of the 1980’s/1990’s BTP safety visits to schools….
  13. I would of banked it in the hope it will just about cover next winters energy bill….
  14. How up to date are the Royal Mail in your area? Our town is seeing some letters delayed for up to three or four weeks (there is another thread on it somewhere)?
  15. I have a brother, sister and brother in law each with their own houses and all under 45. 2 of our 4 houses don’t have landline handsets at all, as they haven’t seen the point when they moved in despite having the phone line for their broadband. When I used to have a BT service it gave us the 10 recommended numbers for friends and family discount, my parents, the wife’s parents, my workplace and 7 local takeaways…impressive as we only had takeaway on a Friday night….and before just-eat came along with its easy website ordering.
  16. Thing is it only takes a few seconds distraction or not concentrating. Last week I got caught out as we have some roadworks that have started under the Marsh railway bridge in Didcot and then moving away up the road. There were three way traffic lights on the roundabout immediately adjacent to the bridge, with one set of lights on the opposite side of the bridge to close one lane, then the other for the works. They initially involved wrong-siding the roundabout and then the route changed almost daily as the work progresses. A few mornings ago shortly before dawn I went through to wrong side it per the previous occasion and found myself head to head with a moved set of traffics lights, a queue of cars and nowhere to go, so had to make a very swift three point turn and go right way round the roundabout. I noted the roadwork blue arrow signage had been updated correctly, and still have not a clue what possessed me to make the wrong-side move, as I use the route daily and it was back to the correct way round the roundabout….luckily no one else in the queue followed me…
  17. If you click the RMWeb logo top right it takes you to the top of the forum(teaching you to suck eggs ), the Gold private forum is the second sub-forum if you are a member.
  18. There is also The Clockworks in Didcot which is across the road road from Didcot Parkway station. They are appointment by phone only on 01235 211732. They did a really good job on a Chiming key wound wall clock for my my parents a few years ago.
  19. Frankly I would implement a 10 second stationary period for all pit stops and stop all the undercut/over cut nonsense completely, regardless of safety cars…
  20. In the uk you can generally claim VAT on tools/equipment/stock etc still in the company’s possession at time of VAT registration if they were purchased in the last four years in such a situation: https://www.gov.uk/vat-registration/purchases-made-before-registration Agree completely with your final line
  21. I suspect the clue is @Hroth’s comment about moving at the start of December, what notice period did anyone else being changed get I wonder?
  22. Ooops, nearly lost one….. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10457643/Train-driver-avoids-derailment-leaving-cab-dangling-track-damaged-floodwater.html
  23. Haven’t experienced this version yet, but, like the majority of companies these days, have been using Voice over IP (VOIP) systems for years at work, both with an in house exchange in the office, and latterly a stand alone handset at home that connects back to the mothership over the internet. For 99% of calls there is no difference at all to a normal call. Rarely you experience a poor signal that is like one party being on a mobile with poor reception. Very occasionally I find when talking to another so equipped call centre they simply won’t sync and one party cannot hear the other. Early on with the first system at work we couldn’t enter numbers to navigate through menus and enter one time passcodes etc and needed settings tweaked. As you say in the event of a power cut you have no connections at all, unless both your router and phone are plugged into a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which do last for hours under such a light load but are bulky and not a good look on the living room table. I understand this system works with conventional phones plugged into your router/home hub, which gives BT standardisation over the settings etc and should hopefully be much smoother for the home user experience. The fun with just 8 days notice will be for anyone with analogue dependent services such as intruder alarms, distress pendents or multiple wired handsets around the house. It will also be more interesting for anyone using their own router etc where BT cannot change settings remotely if there are support issues or updates to the network settings.
  24. Bit late on the quote there Sam, and Halogens don’t, but the Sodium lamps still in use in many warehouses do (and benefit from a 10-20 year plus lifespan in the warehouse I managed until recently, useful at 8 metres up!)
